Abstract Septage management is a challenging task across India as more than 44% of the population depends on septic tanks for human waste management. Septage collected from Chennai city, India, was found to be rich in nutrients even though the total solids content (<2%) and C/N are low. The current practice of septage disposal in Chennai city is co-treatment in existing sewage treatment plants. The main drawback of this method is that treatment efficiency could deteriorate if the organic load increased much beyond the design load of the treatment plant and would result in poor treated-water quality. In this context, the present study focused on the potential of in-vessel co-composting as a sustainable treatment option. In order to enhance the co-composting process, suitable co-substrates were identified for making the process efficient and cost-effective. The area under the temperature profile during composting was used as an assessment tool for the identification of the proper mix. Addition of mixed organic waste and coir pith waste (bulking agent) to the dewatered septage gave the highest area among the different combinations. Different waste combinations were investigated in order to assess the suitability for field scale application.

In recent times, there is an increase in the utilization of the ride-hail service (viz., mobile application-based shared service) by the younger generation due to tremendous changes in technology, extensive usage of smartphones, and perceived convenience during travelling. For evaluating ride-hail service further, it is necessary to understand the user perception towards the ride-hail service and public transportation system (viz., bus in this case) to efficiently plan the public transportation services. Hence, the present study analyzes user perception while making trips, using ride-hail service and public transport buses. A long stretch of 3.8 km has been selected in the Nagpur city for the study and the stretch attracts a good number of trips by ride-hailing and public transportation. To perform the analysis, a survey has been conducted in the stretch which includes an online survey (viz., based on the Google form) and an offline survey (viz., at selected bus stops on the route between university campus and shopping complex). A binary logit model has been developed to understand the user perception towards ride-hail service and to identify the significant contributing factors towards the preference of the ride-hail service over the public transport bus. From the model results, it has been noted that age, accessibility, waiting time, travel time, income, and travel cost of the trip are the most significant contributing factors that affect user decision for availing the ride-hail service. It has been concluded from the study that the inferences obtained would be useful in the direction of developing warrants for transport planners and policymakers to improve the service quality of public transport buses (viz., frequency and routes) in cities especially in the Indian context.

This paper reports the development of a public transport trip planner to help the urban traveller in planning and preparing for his commute using public transportation in the city. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach that handles real-time Global Positioning Systems (GPS) data from buses of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai City (India) has been used to develop the planner. The GA has been shown to provide good solutions within the problem’s computation time constraints. The developed trip planner has been implemented for static network data first and subsequently extended to use real-time data. The “walk mode” and Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) have also been included in the geospatial database to extend the route-planner’s capabilities. The algorithm has subsequently been segmented to speed up the prediction process. In addition, a temporal cache has also been introduced during implementation, to handle multiple queries generated simultaneously. The results showed that there is promise for scalability and citywide implementation for the proposed real-time route-planner. The uncertainty and poor service quality perceived with public transport bus services in India could potentially be mitigated by further developments in the route-planner introduced in this paper.

It is important to consider sustainable design for accessibility in all aspects of physical development. The accessibility of social sustainable for people with disabilities (PWDs) is essential to ensure that they do not feel segregated from the community. The facilities provided must be user-friendly at places where they live and work. Although there are common facilities for PWDs, most of them do not function well and are not convenient to be used by the disabled people. AbstractUser Centered Design approach is used in many sectors and appropriated by many design teams to defend principles of products adapted to the final users. In the Architectural and Industrial Design disciplines, architects and designers defend principles that could be able to create spaces, public areas or innovated products that are closer as possible as the user behavior. The issue is still the complexity of the user perception and the variability of its interpretation of the environment. The research method used in this research is to combine Universal Design and Usability approaches to be able to extract one first list of principles. The combination of this list with the five human sensorial systems identified in the literature give the structure of a tool that can be proposed to projectists like architects and industrial designers to better consider user perception during the designing process. The result of the research is the proposition of a software coupled with a user friendly interface dedicated to architects and industrial designer. It has the aim to simplify the organization of the early phases of the design process, taking into account designers and architects design priorities and integrating the final user specific sensorial situation.

ABSTRACTEconomic Impacts of Transjakarta Operation Judging from User Perception: The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta has used a service purchase scheme for public transport operators known as Buy The Service. In this study, an analysis of the Transjakarta passenger perception index will be carried out in terms of the economic impact of the Transjakarta operation using cross tabulation analysis and community satisfaction index. The perception of 461 Transjakarta users shows that the value of Transjakarta services is 85.69 with very good criteria which indicates that Transjakarta users feel happy seen from the economic impact with the lowest average repair value, the lowest average value, the value, the lowest average score, the lowest, 3.8 integration between transportation, and the range of Transjakarta service areas.    Keywords: Transjakarta; Buy The Service; Perception Index.ABSTRAKPemerintah Provinsi DKI Jakarta telah menggunakan skema pembelian pelayanan kepada pihak operator angkutan umum yang di kenal dengan istilah Buy The Service. Pada penelitian ini, dilakukan analisis terhadap indeks persepsi penumpang Transjakarta ditinjau dari dampak ekonomi dari pengoperasian Transjakarta menggunakan analisis tabulasi silang dan indeks kepuasan masyarakat. Persepsi dari 461 pengguna Transjakarta menunjukkan bahwa nilai pelayanan Transjakarta sebesar 85,69 dengan kriteria sangat baik yang mengindikasikan bahwa pengguna Transjakarta merasa bahagia dilihat dari dampak ekonomi dengan nilai rata-rata tertinggi  sebesar 3,85, Nilai terendah dan harus mendapat perhatian fokus perbaikan, yaitu integrasi antar angkutan, dan jangkauan wilayah pelayanan Transjakarta.Kata Kunci: Transjakarta; Buy The Service; Indek Persepsi

Most Indian cities are experiencing rapid urbanization, and a majority of the country's population is expected to live in cities within a span of the next two decades. The rapid development in urban India has also resulted in a tremendous increase in the number of motor vehicles, and in some cities, this has doubled in the last decade. This is the main source of air pollution and poor ambient air quality impacting millions of dwellers. This chapter presents a review of the vehicular population in urban Indian cities with its pattern and determinants. The transport system is shared by two parts such as public transport as well as private transport system. To reduce the vehicular pollution, we have to emphasize on public transport system rather than private transport. In an underdeveloped country, it is very tough to use public transport. Due to lack of government fund, new technology, proper checking, etc., private cars, buses, and tracks are increased rapidly. We use these randomly for transport purposes. This causes pollution.

In this chapter, the authors present a modular mobile system utilizing social and localization information in the purpose of city traffic optimization on a single person scale. The system operates based on human behaviour and presents the recommendations to reduce car traffic without overloading public transport. Since the system is meant to work with single humans, the success will depend on a person’s willingness to use the recommendations. Therefore, the solution needs to be user friendly, simple to use, and mobile. That is why it is based on two popular and easy to use technologies – social websites and mobile phones.
