Kata Kunci: teks report, transitivitas, linguistik sistemik fungsional Abstract This research aimed at investigating the most dominant of transitivity process used in report text and how it relates with the nature of report text. It employed descriptive qualitative design and applied Systemic Functional Linguistics on Transitivity. The data were 29 clauses taken from report texts used in ninth grade’s National Exam. The result of this research revealed that six types of transitivity processes found in the report texts. Yet, material (44%) and relational (31%) were found to dominate the rest of the processes. This research focuses on two review texts published in a teenage magazine called Teen Ink. It is aimed to discover the language style and text structure used by the same text producer. Using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach, this research describes the register and genre employed in the two analyzed texts. The analysis was done by examining and comparing the generic structure and the metafunctions of each text. The description of data led to the interpretation of field, tenor, and mode. From the genre analysis, it can be seen that the text producer follows the same text structure for both texts, though differences were found in the technique used to compose each stage of the text. In terms of register, different dominant transitivity and circumstance types were found in both texts. Meanwhile, the text producer puts all participants surrounding the texts in equal position, and positive assessment is implied in both texts. In addition, as the texts are written in a language style that tends to be spoken, the texts are considered appropriate for the medium, namely the review column of Teen Ink magazine.

Abstract. This paper analyzes the appraisal system of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie review by Roger Ebert. This study aims at analyzing the evaluation given by the reviewer toward the movie. The data of this research are all clauses containing appraising items toward the movie. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method and analytical frameworks suggested by Martin and White (2005) and Martin and Rose (2003) on appraisal system in systemic functional linguistics (SFL). Based on the analysis, the researcher found that the kind of appraising item mostly used by the reviewer is attitudinal lexis (35%) and the least used items are relational process (1%) and modality clause (1%). The attitude is mostly appreciation (59%), followed by affect (26%) and judgment (15%). For the engagement, the evaluations are classified as monogloss (99%) and heterogloss (1%). For the graduation, the evaluations are classified as down-scaled (76%) and up-scaled (24%). It can be concluded that the reviewer tends to use attitudinal lexis in his evaluation. The evaluations are mostly sourced from the reviewer himself. The reviewer tends to evaluate things more than people, and his evaluations are mostly to be negative toward the movie. Keywords: appraisal system; movie review; evaluation languageAbstrak.
Abstrak: Penerapan Modalitas Metafora Interpersona pada Ayat-Ayat Suci al-Qur’an.

Abstract:This article is the result of a descriptive qualitative research which examine to what extent the theory of Interpersonal Metaphor of mood postulated by Halliday (1994) is relevant to be applied to the verses of the Holy al-Qur’an. The Interpersonal Metaphor applied in this survey covers the three kinds of mood which constitute indicative mood, interrogative mood and imperative mood. This work, however, does not cover the Interpersonal Metaphor of modality. The result shows that some verses of the Holy al-Qur’an use the transference of mood in conveying messages: some indicative moods are expressed in the interrogative and imperative, some imperative moods in the indicative and interrogative, and some interrogative moods in the indicative and imperative. The writer maintains that Halliday’s theory of Interpersonal Metaphor can be justified as an adequate linguistic theory.

Keywords: systemic functional linguistics, interpersonal metaphor, al-Qur’an, literature
