The study evaluates the bioactive components and the effect of aqueous leaf extract of Maesobotrya barteri (Baill.) Hutch. (Euphorbiaceae) on the haematological profile of paracetamol-induced Wistar albino rats. Standard methods were used in the proximate, phytochemical and haematological profile analysis. The results of the proximate composition revealed high values for crude fiber (49.13%), carbohydrates (16.33%) and protein (10.94%). Phytochemical studies showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, phenols and tannins within the concentration range of 0.0003-94.68 µg/mL. Twenty-four hours after the last oral administration, the rats were sacrificed. Blood was obtained by cardiac puncture. Results of the haematological profile at different dose levels (200 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg body weight) did not show any significant difference (p > 0.05) when compared with the control. A slight increase was observed in the erythrocytes (red blood cells, haemoglobin, packed cell volume and platelets). Meanwhile, a significant increase (p <= 0.05) was observed in the WBC and platelets of the groups induced with paracetamol only. However, administration of ascorbic and the sample extract reduced the white blood cells and platelet levels. The study revealed that M. barteri leaves contain an appreciable amount of nutrients, bioactive constituents and may serve as a blood booster.

Haematological profile of air breathing mud eel, Monopterus cuchia (Hamilton) from Mymensinghh and Kishoreganj were determined in the present study. Erythrocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils and platelet were evaluated. Significantly higher (p < 0.05) haemoglobin (Hb) concentration was found in air breathing mud eel of Kishoreganj than that of Mymensinghh area. The haematocrit (HCT), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), total red blood cells (TRBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), total white blood cells (TWBC), lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils did not show any significant difference. Findings of the present study showed little variation of haematological profile in air breathing mud eel sampled from Mymensinghh and Kishoreganj. Dhaka Univ. J. Biol. AbstractHaematological studies help in understanding the relationship of blood characteristics to the environment. One of the major environmental factors influencing haematological indicators is season. This study was aimed at the variation in haematological profiles of two strains of laying birds at different seasons. We therefore evaluated the effects of genotype and season on the haematological profile in two strains of laying birds – Dominant brown (D-192) and Hyline brown in the tropics. A total of 50 birds per strain at 30 weeks of age were randomly selected for this study. Packed cell volume (PCV) and platelets were obtained using microhaematocrit whereas red blood cells (RBC) and white blood cells (WBC) were counted using a haemocytometer. The result obtained showed that there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in the haematological profile of the birds in the two seasons compared (rainy and dry seasons). The haematological indices obtained during the rainy season had significantly higher mean values in packed cell volume (29.65 ± 0.32%), red blood cells (2.65 ± 0.03 × 1012/L), haemoglobin (100.1 ± 0.11 g/L) and eosinophil (2.5 ± 0.16%) while those obtained during the dry season had a higher significant effect on the white blood cells (19.16 ± 0.36 × 109/L). The results further revealed that between the strains, there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in most of the indicators analysed but Hyline brown had significantly higher values (P < 0.05) of eosinophils and platelets. We concluded that the observed differences could be a result of genetic differences between the two strains of birds which gives room for selection and that the rainy season is more favourable for laying birds production under tropical condition.

An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the performance, carcass quality, haematological indices and economics of production of rabbits fed dietary sorghum offal substitute for maize grain. A total of forty (40) weaned rabbits with a mean weight range of 820-850 g were randomly distributed to five treatment diets where 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of sorghum offal replaced maize grain in the gross feed composition to give Diets 1 (control), 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively. Each treatment diet was replicated eight times with a rabbit taken as a replicate. The determined chemical composition of the experimental diets ranged between 17.12% and17.43% for crude protein (CP), 11.48 and 14.89% for crude fibre (CF), 5.04 and 7.74% for ether extract or fat (EE), 54.17 and 56.41% for nitrogen free extract (NFE) and 3069.35kcal/kg to 3241.17ME(kcal/kg). While the results on performance showed no significant difference (P>0.05) in feed intake by rabbits fed the five test diets, there appeared to be significant decrease (P<0.05) in the weight gain and feed conversion ratio of rabbits fed 50 to 100% sorghum offal-based diets. Carcass cuts that showed significant reduction (P<0.05) at 75 and 100% sorghum offal-based diets are the carcass weight, thigh, loin, shoulder and ribs weights. Organs such as liver, kidney, heart and pancreas weights measured were significantly higher (P<0.05) at 75 and 100% sorghum offal-based diets. Haematological profile such as Packed Cell Volume (PCV), Red Blood Cells (RBC), White Blood Cells (WBC), Mean Cell Volume (MCV) and White Blood Counts such as neutrophil and basophil showed significant difference (P<0.05) at 75% and 100% sorghum offal-based diets. The serum metabolites such as albumin, globulin, cholesterol and urea showed a similar trend of significant difference (P<0.05) at 75% and 100% sorghum offal inclusion compared to other test diets. For economic production, the study revealed an optimum inclusion of sorghum offal at 50% (24.60 g/kg in feed composition) for maize grain in rabbit concentrate feed is possible. Above this level, a loss of N23.17 and N13.16 was recorded as evidenced by the cost differential and benefit cost analysis.

Purpose: to study hematological parameters of blood in bulls-producers of dairy breeds on the day of semen collection in the Udmurt Republic after a long winter period of operation, depending on the breeds, age and place of selection.Materials and methods. The work was performed at the Federal Research Center for Animal Husbandry named after Academy Member L. K. Ernst on the basis of AO "Udmurtplem" of the Udmurt Republic in the period from 2020 to 2021 on dairy bulls (n=20) aged 15-69 months, including a purebred Holstein breed of domestic selection (n=6), a Holstein black-and-white breed of European selection (the Netherlands, n=6), a black-and-white breed with blood transfusion on Holsteins on at the level of 94-98% (n=8). The content of white blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin and hematocrit, depending on age and breed, was studied on the ABC VET hematological analyzer on the day of taking the seed.Results. It was found that on average, in 20 bulls aged 15-69 months, the level of white blood cells was at the level of reference values of 8.8±0.25 x 109/l, red blood cells 10.3 x 1012/l, which is 50% more than the reference values. The concentration of hemoglobin is 128.0±2.92 g/l, hematocrit is on average 54.3%, with a norm of 24-46%. Breeding bulls at a reliable level, differing in age, showed that some animals had high indicators for red blood cells of 10.3±0.26 x 102, for hematocrit of 54.3% against 24-46% of reference values. Also, according to hematological indicators, there was a tendency to increase the concentration of hemoglobin and hematocrit in European-bred bulls.Conclusion. The study of the variability in hematological parameters depending on the selection showed that there is no significant difference in leukocytes and all indicators are at the level of reference values, and in erythrocytes more than 50% than the highest indicators. The highest hemoglobin values were at the level of 141-156 g/l instead of 128 g/l according to the highest reference values. Hematocrit also showed high max values in all groups in comparison with the reference values of 59-66% versus 46% in the norm. It is necessary when analyzing hematological blood parameters in addition to the average statistical indicators (M+m) also, monitor the variability (min-max) in order to obtain more objective information.

The aim of this study was to evaluate alterations to the physiological profile (cortisol, glycaemia, and blood parameters) of Lithobates catesbeianus caused by the stressors density and hypoxia. The organisms were in the prometamorphosis stage and exposed to different tadpole densities: 1 tadpole/L (T1), 5 tadpoles/L (T2), and 10 tadpoles/L (T3) for 12 days. The blood was collected through the rupture of the caudal blood vessel and collected under normoxia (immediate collection) and hypoxia (after 15 minutes of air exposure) conditions. Cortisol levels rose on the fourth and eighth days of treatment and returned to basal levels by the end of the experiment. The stressor mechanisms tested did not affect glycaemia. White blood cells (total number of lymphocytes, neutrophils, and eosinophils) showed a significant difference at the twelfth day of the experiment when compared with the start of the experiment. We concluded that, under controlled conditions, a density of up to 10 tadpoles/L and air exposure for 15 minutes did not cause harmful physiological alterations during the experimental period. The answer to these stressors maybe was in another hormonal level (corticosterone).

The work is devoted to the study of changes in the cellular composition of bronchoalveolar lavage over time in the modeling of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in mice. ARDS was modeled by administering α-galactosylceramide and a mixture of lipopolysaccharide with a complete Freud’s adjuvant. After euthanasia, bronchoalveolar lavage was taken for analysis. On this basis, changes in the total number of white blood cells, the percentage of neutrophils and macrophages were assessed. It was found that the percentage of neutrophils in the ARDS group shows a statistically significant difference from that in the intact group, starting from 3 hours after modeling ARDS. Further, a statistically significant decrease in macrophages was observed.

Nitrofurantoin (NT) used for the treatment of urinary tract infections may have antiplasmodial activity. Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) is an artemisinin based combination therapy used for the treatment of malaria. This study evaluated the antiplasmodial effect of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine-nitrofurantoin (DP-NT) on mice infected with Plasmodium berghei. Adult Swiss albino mice (30-35 g) of both sexes were used. The mice were randomly grouped, inoculated with Plasmodium berghei, and treated orally with DP (1.7/13.7 mg/kg), NT (57.1 mg/kg) and DP-NT (1.71/13.7/ 57.1 mg/kg), respectively using curative, prophylactic and suppressive tests. The negative control was orally treated with normal saline (0.3 mL), while the positive control was orally treated with chloroquine CQ (10mg/kg). After treatment, blood samples were collected and evaluated for percentage parasitemia, inhibitions and hematological parameters. Liver samples were evaluated for histological changes. The mice were observed for mean survival time (MST). Treatment with DP-NT decreased parasitemia levels when compared to individual doses of DP and NT with significant difference observed at p<0.05. DP-NT prolonged MST when compared to individual doses of DP and NT with significant difference observed at p<0.05. The decrease in packed cell volume, red blood cells, hemoglobin and increase in white blood cells in parasitized mice were significantly restored by DP-NT  when compared to individual doses of DP and NT with difference observed at p<0.05. DP-NT eradicated liver Plasmodium parasite.  NT remarkably increased the antiplasmodial activity of DP. DP-NT may be used for the treatment of malaria.

Aspartame (ASP) is one of the most widely used nonnutritive sweeteners. This study investigates the chronic effects of ASP on hematological and biochemical parameters, and its effects on the oxidative/antioxidative status in the red blood cells of Wistar albino rats. Rats were provided with ASP (40 mg/kg/daily for six weeks) in drinking water. Increased food and fluid intake was observed in the ASP-treated rats. Total body mass was significantly decreased in the ASP-treated rats. Treatment with ASP caused an increase in the concentrations of glucose, cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and in the activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), as well as a decrease in the levels of HDL-cholesterol in the serum. A significant decline in the number of white blood cells (WBC) was observed after ASP uptake. Based on the results we conclude that ASP induces oxidative stress, observed as an alteration of the glutathione redox status, which leads to increased concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and lipid peroxides (LPO) in the red blood cells. Changes in biochemical parameters, lipid metabolism, as well as changes in the levels of oxidative stress markers and the appearance of signs of liver damage indicate that chronic use of ASP can lead to the development of hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia and associated diseases.

Objectives: To determine the effects of Allium sativum essential oil (ASEO)phytotherapy on serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDLc, LDLc and blood cell counts inalbino rat model. Study design: Experimental study. Setting and Duration: Animal House,Sindh Agriculture University and Isra University Hyderabad from May 2014 to January 2015.Materials and Methods: 60 albino rats were divided into four groups. Controls were givenPlacebo. Experimental rat groups were given ASEO 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 300 mg/kgorally for 30 days. Cardiac puncture was performed for blood sampling. Research variableswere analyzed on Statistix 10.0 (USA). Results: Blood lipids showed significant reduction invarious blood lipid fractions. Serum LDLc exhibited with a concomitant rise in serum HDLc (p=0.0001) in high ASEO treated rats. Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelet showedsignificant improvement ASEO fed rats (p=0.001). Conclusion: Allium sativum essential oil(ASEO) phytotherapy showed a rise in HDLc and a reduction in LDLc, triglycerides and totalcholesterol with improvement in red blood cell counts.
