Introduction Hand grip strength is used in evaluation of muscle strength and is also increasingly being used as an indicator for nutritional status. The maximum force applied voluntarily by the subject is called maximum handgrip strength, which is measured in kilograms. Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle or muscle group to perform against a load for an extended period of time, measured in seconds. This study aims to correlate body mass index with handgrip strength and handgrip endurance in medical students. MethodsThis is a cross sectional, observational study which included 74 undergraduate students of Maharajgunj Medical Campus by convenient sampling method. Body mass index was calculated by Quetelet’s formula. Camry digital hand dynamometer was used to measure handgrip strength in the dominant hand in kilograms. Participants were instructed to hold dynamometer with maintained pressure of 30% of maximum handgrip strength for as long as possible to determine the handgrip endurance. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS Statistics software. ResultsThe handgrip strength was more in males than females with a mean of 43.09±3.72 kg, while handgrip endurance was more in females with a mean of 123.60±50.65 sec. Positive correlation was seen between body mass index and handgrip strength (r=0.23 and p=0.045). Body mass index and handgrip endurance also showed positive correlation (r=0.34 and p=0.003). ConclusionSignificant correlation of body mass index with handgrip strength and handgrip endurance was seen in medical students.

Background: This paper investigates the problems regarding caffeinated drinks intake, late chronotype, and increased body mass index (BMI) among medical students at a Chinese university. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2018 with 616 medical students from Chongqing Medical University in Chongqing, China, whose information were collected by a self-reported questionnaire that included four sections: Demographic characteristics; Caffeinated drinks intake and physical state; Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire; Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 21. Multiple mediation analyses were conducted to test the impact of late chronotype on increased BMI through caffeinated drinks consumption through two models. Results: The significantly mediated effect of caffeinated drinks consumption was revealed (estimate: −0.01, SE = 0.01, 95% CI [−0.02, −0.01]), and which played a positive role in linking late chronotype (B = −0.01, SE = 0.01, p < 0.001) and increased BMI (B = 1.37, SE = 0.21, p < 0.01), but their significant association did not be found in reversed model. In addition, physical activity and inactivity times demonstrated significant indirect effects in the two models. Conclusions: Interventions should focus on reducing caffeinated drinks intake and sedentary behavior time, enhancing physical activity among medical students.

Background: Studies have concluded that the medical students of hostels are at high risk of anemia due to inappropriate diet and their long schedules that indirectly affect their performance. Thus, concerning for the long duration of medical studies, it has become a serious medical issue. Aims and Objective: Thus, our objective is to determine the prevalence of anemia among medical students in Nobel Medical College and Teaching Hospital, Nepal. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study which was conducted and Teaching Hospital from January 2017 to December 2017 where all the subjects were selected with convenient sampling technique. The total of 150 MBBS students (male=95, female=55), age 18-25 years were included in the study who were clinically healthy. The demographic data (name, age, sex, address) and anthropometric variables (height, weight, body mass index) were recorded and hemoglobin was estimated by Sahli’s acid hematin method. Results: Only 42.1% of total were mild anemic and 11.6 % were moderately anemic. Among female, 1.8% were severely anemic, 9.1% were moderately anemic and 41.8% were mild anemic. Compared to male, anemia in female medical students was found to be more extensive. Conclusions: It has been concluded from the above study that the mild anemia is highly prevalent among medical students regardless of gender. Though the subjects are not severely affected, it is a concerned issue since the cause might be inappropriate food habit or the food facilities available at hostels.

Objectives: To find out the association of body mass index with different bloodgroups in medical students. Background: Increased body mass index leads to obesity and is aprominent risk factor for hypertension and diabetes. Blood groups are known to be associatedwith various diseases and recent studies have shown that a particular blood group with thehighest body mass index appeared to be more susceptible to predisposition to hypertension.Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Liaquat National Medical College, Karachi.Period: June 2015 to September 2015. Methodology: 181 medical students with 85 malesand 96 females and age ranging from 18-22 years. Weight and height of each student wasmeasured using the standard stadiometer and blood groups were determined using the antisera.Results: Mean age of the participants was 19.92 ± 1.10 years. Blood group “O” wasfound to be most prevalent (39.2%) while blood group “AB” was found to be the least (8.3%).Mean BMI of subjects with blood group A, B, AB and O were found to be 24.3 ± 5.04, 22.6 ±3.59, 23.0 ± 2.91 and 23.7 ± 4.20 kg/m2 respectively. The highest BMI was found in subjectswith blood group “A” 24.3 ± 5.04 kg/m2 and lowest in blood group “AB” 23.0 ± 2.91kg/m2. TheRhesus-D positive and male students had greater body mass index 23.6 ± 3.56 than females23.2 ± 3.44. Comparison of overall mean BMI values among different blood groups showedsignificant difference with p-value < 0.001. Conclusion: Blood group “A” and Rhesus-D positivesubjects especially males were found to be the high risk blood type with predisposition tomorbidity associated with increased body mass index.

Background: The public health burden of a sedentary lifestyle has been recognized globally. Physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth leading risk factor in global mortality. Medical professionals have a significant role in counselling patients so as to reach the public health goals. The objectives were to evaluate patterns of physical activity comprising work, transport, domestic and leisure domains and its correlation with gender and body mass index (BMI) among medical students.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 128 medical students. The international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) long form was used to measure total physical activity (PA) and metabolic equivalent (MET). BMI was calculated using height and weight. Data analyzed by SPSS version 20.Results: It was observed that the PA was low among medical students. As per MET score, 80.5%, 58.6%, 67.2% and 39% of students had a low PA pattern in domains of work, transport, domestic and leisure time respectively. The practice of domestic and leisure activity was significantly lower among female students compared to males with p-values of <0.009 and 0.005. The association between PA score and its domains with BMI of students was found to be not significant. In female students a significant positive relationship was observed between domestic and BMI scores with r =0.3459, p<0.005.Conclusions: Medical students in this study were insufficiently physically active. The practice of activity was intensely lower in females compared to males. These results reflect us the crucial need for intervention on students’ health promotion strategies.

Background: Handgrip is a predictor of physical fitness, hand functions, and nutritional status. It is affected by many factors including age, sex, body mass index, and hand dimensions.Aims and Objectives: To assess the handgrip strength among medical students and to examine its correlation with body mass index and hand dimensions.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 256 students of both sexes selected from College of Medicine, Basrah University, Iraq using non-probability purposive sampling method. Their anthropometric parameters including height, weight, and hand dimensions were assessed using routine techniques. The handgrip was measured by using a handheld dynamometer. Hand preference was determined by asking which hand was used to write.Results: The mean age of the participants was 21.1 ± 1.9 years. The mean of handgrip strength was 34.1 ± 11.9 Kg. Males had significantly (P <0.001) greater handgrip strength than females. Statistically significant correlation was detected between body mass index, hand dimensions and handgrip strength. The right-handed students scored significantly higher grip strength with their preferred hand. While among left-handed students, no significant difference in handgrip strength was noticed between left and right hands. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that gender, hand span, height, and body mass index were independent determinants of handgrip strength. They accounted for 70.6% of the variation in handgrip strength.Conclusion: A significant effect of body mass index and hand span on handgrip strength among medical students was observed.Asian Journal of Medical Sciences Vol.9(1) 2018 21-26

The Obesity and Hypertension are major risk factors of several life threatening diseases in human body. Objectives: To determine correlation coefficient of Body Mass Index with blood pressure: a gender based comparison in medical students. Study Design: Comparative Cross-sectional study in students. Setting: Physiology department of BMU Karachi. Period: Duration of this study was 6 months from February 2017 to August 2017. Material and Methods: A total of 500 students were enrolled in this study. The anthropometric measurement [height (m2) and weight (kg)] was recorded for calculation of the Body Mass Index (BMI) and blood pressure (BP) was measured by using sphygmomanometer with stethoscope. SPSS version 22.0 was used to analyze the data. Results: BMI overall in both genders were significantly (p<0.05) correlated in mean Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) and mean Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP). Underweight and Normal weight were not correlated with both mean SBP and mean DBP in both genders. Overweight subjects were positively correlated with mean DBP in males and mean SBP in females (p<0.05). Obese students were not significantly (p>0.05) correlated with both mean SBP and mean DBP in males whereas, there were not enough observations to draw any meaningful conclusion in females. Conclusion: Overweight subjects were positively correlated (p<0.05) with mean DBP in males and mean SBP in females and overall BMI (mean SBP & mean DBP) in both genders.
