Patients with mental illness are exposed and experience themselves as not being taken seriously in emergency care. Registered nurses need to assess patients with mental illness from a holistic perspective comprising both a physical and an existential dimension. The aim of the study was to describe registered nurses’ (RNs) experiences of assessing patients with mental illness in emergency care. Twenty-eight RNs in prehospital and in-hospital emergency care were individually interviewed. The interviews were analysed descriptively. The design followed the COREQ-checklist. One main theme ‘A conditional patient assessment’ and two themes; ‘A challenged professional role’ and ‘A limited openness for the patient’, comprising in turn four sub-themes emerged. Although the RNs showed willingness to understand the mental illness aspects of their patients, they were insufficient in their assessments. This implies the importance of developing emergency care RNs’ competence, knowledge and self-confidence in assessments and care of patients with mental illness.

The article addresses changes in the species composition of spiders during the warm season. The qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the spider community were analyzed during the most important periods of their activity in the main biotopes of the Volgograd agglomeration. The Cluster Analysis application, based on the Jaccard index, was used. The material was collected using 10 mm Barber soil traps with a fixing liquid (6% acetic acid solution). In total, 235 species of spiders belonging to 26 families were identified, including 195 species belonging to 23 families on the territory of Volgograd. Notably, 155 species were new to the fauna of the Volgograd region. Species Trichoncus villius Tanasevitch et Piterkina was found in the Russian Federation for the first time. The species composition was analyzed during critical periods of spider life: the end of winter diapause, the time before the summer diapause, the termination of summer diapause, and the period of before winter the diapause. In each case a set of traps were exposed for seven days. The spring period was characterized by the maximum number of species, and the maximum similarity in species composition was observed between the moment when spiders leave the winter diapause and the period before the summer diapause. During the warm season, the species composition changed almost completely twice: before the end of the summer diapause and at the end of the warm season, approaching the spring values. These changes were significantly less relevant to near-water biotopes, where environmental conditions were more stable compared to the other studied biotopes.

The aim of the present study was to discuss the way visibility constitutes a power device in the everyday practice of the Mobile Emergency Care Service in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. A qualitative case study was developed and data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 31 workers of the service (five physicians, 11 nurses, seven nursing assistants and eight ambulance drivers) and submitted to discourse analysis. The analysis of power relations in the service allowed to verify that there is not an only one source from which the power emanates in this organizational structure. Power is exercised through many techniques and their sources are scattered, diffuse, interchangeable and even confusing. Although there is a hierarchical structure formally established, a parallel network to this structure is formed. It was also observed that the visibility generated by radio communication provides constant supervision, which generates tension within the team.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify meanings about neoplasia in drawings of adolescents affected by the disease. Method: this is a qualitative, descriptive study with three adolescents assisted by an association of leukemic parents and friends. The design of adolescents was used as a research tool and the theory of semiotic image analysis. The narrative of the drawing and the figure itself were considered, observing: color, stroke, shape, constituent elements and representation of the figure. Results: it is noteworthy that, in the drawings, gray tones predominated and little colored, which shows fear and insecurity, feelings that are common in diseases and that translate the situation experienced by adolescents with limiting disease with risks of being terminal. It is revealed that human figures appear with fine features and childishly for the age, and although they were encouraged to verbalize about their illness, few spoke and the statements confirmed the results obtained through the drawings. Conclusion: the perception of the adolescents' experience with cancer was revealed through the use of the drawing, revealing their feelings about the moment they experienced and could be used as an auxiliary therapeutic process. Exploratory-descriptive study on non-verbal communication among nurses and blind patients during nursing consultations to diabetes patients, based on Hall's theoretical reference framework. Data were collected by recording the consultations. The recordings were analyzed every fifteen seconds, totaling 1,131 non-verbal communication moments. The analysis shows intimate distance (91.0%) and seated position (98.3%); no contact occurred in 83.3% of the interactions. Emblematic gestures were present, including hand movements (67.4%); looks deviated from the interlocutor (52.8%), and centered on the interlocutor (44.4%). In all recordings, considerable interference occurred at the moment of nurse-patient interaction. Nurses need to know about and deepen non-verbal communication studies and adequate its use to the type of patients attended during the consultations.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the implication and details of the consolidation of the statutes of the Province of Quebec which is now under way. Unlike earlier consolidations, this one will be permanent and brought up to date annually, and as he approaches his subject, the author describes what must be understood by keeping up to date and who should be responsible for the task. Next, he discusses the technical aspects which ought to be considered in the process of keeping the consolidation up to date, among which are the moment and methods to inserting new texts, the numbering of sections, and the vehicle for the publication of amending legislation. In the third part of his paper, the author describes what important changes would have to be made to the present situation, should the proposed system be adopted. These changes are both documentary (a new presentation of the Quebec official Gazette is advocated) and legislative (new duties of the Quebec Official Printer are stressed). Finally there is established a link between the permanent consolidation and a policy for non-official consolidations. The author concludes with the expression of a point of view on the access of the people to the law.

This chapter describes the principles of grand strategy as applied to global health and public health. It analyzes President George W. Bush's program, called the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (known as PEPFAR). Developed largely in secret and placed outside the traditional USAID bureaucracy, the PEPFAR program pole vaulted the United States into a leadership role in global health. The chapter then highlights how the use of grand strategic principles resulted in a highly successful, if still limited, global health intervention. The Bush Administration articulated explicit goals, or ends, and connected those to the larger ecology of national interests related to demonstrating American morality, and protecting the United States from the threat of pandemic HIV/AIDS. However, PEPFAR as a strategy was incomplete. It failed to address critical root causes of the spread of HIV/AIDS—the social and economic conditions in which such pathogens emerge and spread.
