The article describes the representations of landscapes in the films by Carlos Reygadas, whose role is to evoke the transcendental film style (as understood by Paul Schrader), and to express the experiences, thoughts and action of the screen protagonists. Landscapes perform various functions in Reygadas’s films. They are not only a background for film events or emphasize the mood and aura of contemplation of film images, but also a symbolic representation of emotions and experiences of the film’s heroes, and evoke the sphere of transcendence and sacrum, important for spiritual dilemmas and searches of protagonists. The article cites and discusses all of Reygadas’s fictional films made so far, which gives us the opportunity to compare them and demonstrate their mutual inspiration, and to continue the proprietary workshop, stylistic and thematic solutions. The research method in the article is analytical description of selected landscapes that play an important role in Carlos Reygadas’ films and the interpretation of the symbols contained in them, in accordance with the phenomenological and hermeneutic perspective. Interpretative phenomenological analysis enables, as the research tool used in the article, both the description of images (landscapes) appearing in Reygadas’ films and the presentation of their symbolic meanings. The subject of interest in interpretative phenomenological analysis is the life situation of film heroes, entangled in a chaos of various events and forced to make various choices. In accordance with the attitude adopted by the director, which can be described Katarzyna Citko as the syllaptic ‘I’ (a term used in the meaning given to him by Ryszard Nycz), they are also an exemplification of the worldview and the essence of the artistic creation by the author: Carlos Reygadas himself.

The ability of health-care professionals to understand the lived experiences of their patients has become increasingly important but has been a difficult topic to investigate empirically because it involves two distinctive research strands: interpretative phenomenological analysis and patient–provider communication. While interpretative phenomenological analysis focuses on experiences and illness narratives of patients, but not on therapist’s understanding of those, patient–provider communication surveys focus primarily on effective forms of communication without addressing the actual illness experiences of patients. There is a need for empirical research that combines both strands to investigate not only the experiences of patients but also whether professionals are able to understand these. This study combined both strands by means of a novel research method called the Imitation Game (combined with other qualitative methods). This sociological method was developed to investigate what different social groups know of each other’s lifeworld. It focused on the important domain of eating disorder treatment to investigate whether therapists were able to understand the experiences of their patients and vice versa. This study provides insights into the domains in which therapists and patients were able to develop insights into each other’s experiential knowledge (and where they had difficulties in doing so). The findings also implicate the high potential of the Imitation Game as an interdisciplinary research method. We propose that the Imitation Game may be particularly valuable as a ‘can opener’ that enables the development of in-depth, qualitative insights into the substantive themes that matter in the lifeworlds of patients and therapists.

It is apparent that existing social conventions unofficially mandates women to refuse sexual advances even when there may be the intention to engage. The adherence to this social script is what is referred to as token resistance or scripted refusal. Some studies have explored the subject of token resistance from a number of perspectives that attempt to identify the underlying reasons why women engaging in token resistance. However, there is very little research on this subject from the Nigerian perspective. This this study sought to explore token resistance further in order to understand the cultural cogency or peculiarity of the concept in the Nigerian context. This is because based on available literature, the conceptualization of token resistance may be different. With the use of purposive sampling technique, four sexually active women and undergraduates, volunteered to participate in the study. They were interviewed to understand their unique experiences and perception about token resistance using the principles of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) It was discovered that factors like personal pride, self-control, emotional security of relationship and the gratification of increased attention were responsible for women’s rejection of sexual advances even when there was the intention to do so. The study also got a better understanding of how women culturally represent this concept in Nigeria. We highlight limitations of the study and suggest areas for further study research.

The object of the research is the Mari verbal charms; the subject is their lexical level. The aim of this article is to reveal, describe and classify types of space constituting a system of spatial images and symbols. The significance of the verbal charms as a source of information is beyond doubt and lies in the fact that verbal magic formulas are original, statistically undoubted material that has been created and used for centuries on the territories inhabited by the ethnic group. The methodological basis of the research includes the use of a number of provisions of the theory of system analysis (text is a systemic, a hierarchically structured unit, consisting of a number of elements), which is supplemented by the use of factor (types of space) and statistical types of analysis. They are combined with linguistic methods of semantic research: method of vocabulary analysis, componential and contextual analysis. Imaginary and real actions necessary to achieve the goals of verbal formulas occur in the space-time continuum. In the folklore reflection of reality, the space is used as a background for the events. It is characterized by geographical and climatic features. The article identifies and analyzes the elements of the terrain and geographical objects defined by the term “types of space”. The algorithm of the research includes a number of following steps. First, the lexical composition of 428 texts from various sources is analyzed. Then, using the definitional and component types of analysis, individual lexemes are defined, denoting the types of space. After this step, the frequency of their use is calculated. The ranking of factors contributes to the allocation of four groups of space types, combining eighteen items. The obtained results make it possible to determine the symbols and archetypes of the space of the Mari folklore genres. The most common types of space in the analyzed texts consist of 55,7 % of geographical objects and are marked by the following lexemes: ponds and their parts, housing, earth, sky. They have symbolic meanings containing Mari ethnic religious and mythological view of the universe.

To explore patients’ existential challenges when living with chronic pain or multiple sclerosis, 23 semistructured patient interviews were conducted together with an interpretative, phenomenological analysis inspired by Søren Kierkegaard. Patients experienced their illness as a “stroke of fate” resulting in despair and a profound struggle to find out, who they were, and how they could relate to themselves in their new life-situation. Becoming oneself was experienced as a long-term existential process realized by synthesizing the existential poles of necessities and possibilities through “the other,” such as relationships, nature, spirituality, or God. The different ways to respond to the existential challenges were identified as subjective choices of aesthetic, ethic, and religious life-spheres. The Kierkegaardian relational self and the life-spheres as diverse possibilities are valuable for understanding patients’ existential challenges and the complicated process of finding a new way to relate to oneself when life is fundamentally transformed by illness. To resolve the existential struggles, it seems essential to take a subjective stand in life and have a relationship to something bigger than oneself. The findings can inform clinical practice and inspire health care professionals to identify patients who would welcome a dialogue about illness-related existential struggles for the benefit of their health.

The research aimed at examining ways by which Madurese women could achieve satisfaction in early marriage. Its used a qualitative research method with an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). To understand the meaning of one’s experience by looking for themes from available data, IPA rested on three pillars, namely phenomenology, hermeneutics, and idiography. The researchers used semi-structured interviews to collect data and purposive homogeneous sampling. The participants involved were three married women under 18 years old who were living in Madura. The results of the research show that the three women are satisfied with their marriage. The satisfaction of their marriage can be seen from taking care of each other when sick, giving her enough money, and always happy with her husband, not far apart. Furthermore, Madurese women dissatisfaction in her marriage can be seen from anger if she is not given money and is not helped in doing household.

Disturbed with the disparity in the employment distribution in the civil service, the Nigerian government enacted the Federal Character Policy to ensure equality in employment distribution in the country’s civil service. This has led to the rivalry, disharmony, and discontent in the service. This paper explores measure aimed at ensuring implementation of the Federal Character Policy in the Nigerian civil service employment distribution. In order to meet the objective of the paper qualitative research method adopted while purposive sampling used in selecting the informants interviewed while the relevant document was equally analyzed. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was adopted for data analysis. The paper found that the implementation of the policy can be ensured with committed leadership, orientation and training. The paper provided valuable strategies that will ensure the implementation of the Federal Character Policy in the Nigerian civil service employment distribution and importantly it provided helpful insight for policies that are facing similar implementation setback

This article introduces research in open awareness (OA). The qualitative research method of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was utilised to investigate the characteristic phenomena that are associated with the state and perspective of OA, including its effects in terms of stress resilience, burnout prevention and psychological well-being. The research project involved exploring the experiences of people with high stress and burnout levels who practiced the OA technique for 24 days. The overall outcome of this research suggests that the OA technique may promote resilience to stress, while helping to improve well-being and performance, which in turn may support the prevention and treatment of burnout. This conclusion is supported by current literature, covering how distress and the onset of burnout may be associated with chronic tunnel awareness, which the OA technique was found to counteract. Two distinct areas of future research are proposed involving OA with implications for social renewal.

Through the characters of Zhenya and Boris, the film Nelyubov (2017) explores the issue of a toxic marriage. The story's theme reflects the complexities of the characters' relationships and the resulting problems. This theme adds intrigue to the film's problem articulation, particularly how the film's conflict can be constructed. Accordingly, this study seeks to identify the actant schemes created in the Nelyubov film. This study examines the location of individuals in the film using Algirdas Julien Greimas' Actantial Model theory. Further, this article employs Mills' Discourse Analysis and Smith's Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The results indicate representations for the subject, object, helper, opposer, sender, and receiver in the Nelyubov film, allowing for the fulfillment of the three kinds of axis: the axis of desire, the axis of power, and the axis of transmission/knowledge. The film's subject is Zhenya, and the object is the happiness he seeks.
