Imaging of archaeology, imaging by archaeologists. Among the general public and in the popular media, archaeology has a quite positive image, but one that is far from the realities of the everyday work of professional archaeologists. In this paper, I explore how that biased image became established and what role media professionals and archaeologists play in maintaining it. Further, I discuss what effect the image of excavation as the central, if not the only, aspect of archaeology has and has had on the careers of female archaeologists. Finally, I argue for self-reflection about our professional identities and the way we present our work.

In the 18th century, although the Dutch Company controlled most of the archipelago, the Netherlands also experienced a decline in trade. This was due to the large number of corrupt employees and the fall in the price of spices which eventually created the VOC. Under the rule of H.W. Daendels, the colonial government began to change the way of exploitation from the old conservative way which focused on trade through the VOC to exploitation managed by the government and the private sector. Ulama also strengthen their ties with the general public through judicial management, and compensation, and waqaf assets, and by leading congregational prayers and various ceremonies for celebrating birth, marriage and death. Their links with a large number of artisans, workers (workers), and the merchant elite were very influential.

The Soviet Union of the 1920s produces and supports multiple connections between the policy of work in factories and the research in medical, neurological, and collective physiology. The theatrical and cinematic work of S. M. Eisenstein forms a specific prism where these interconnections appear in a spectrum of concrete attempts to engage the factory as an aesthetic and political model. The factory as a concrete topos which Eisenstein exploits in Gas Masks and Strike questions the interrelations between the human body and machine in a new iconology of a striking factory. For the duration of the Strike, the factory is represented beyond any functionality: the workers’ body movements and gestures are all the more expressive the less they have to do with their everyday work. This modulated status of production appears in Capital, Eisenstein’s unfulfilled project to realize Marx’s political economy with methods of inner monologue invented by Joyce. This last project transfigures the factory strike into the structure of cinematographic thinking where the neuro-sensorial stimuli constantly strike the logic of the everyday consciousness in the non-personal, polyphonic, and intimate monologue.


The Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology studies the burgeoning field of positive psychology, which, in recent years, has transcended academia to capture the imagination of the general public. The book provides a roadmap for the psychology needed by the majority of the population—those who don’t need treatment, but want to achieve the lives to which they aspire. The articles summarize all of the relevant literature in the field, and each is essentially defining a lifetime of research. The content’s breadth and depth provide a cross-disciplinary look at positive psychology from diverse fields and all branches of psychology, including social, clinical, personality, counseling, school, and developmental psychology. Topics include not only happiness—which has been perhaps misrepresented in the popular media as the entirety of the field—but also hope, strengths, positive emotions, life longings, creativity, emotional creativity, courage, and more, plus guidelines for applying what has worked for people across time and cultures.

Abstract In this article we develop a theoretical perspective of how professional identities in multi-professional organisational settings are co-constructed in daily interactions. The research reported here is located in a healthcare context where overlapping knowledge bases, unclear divisions of responsibilities, and an increased managerialist emphasis on teamwork make interprofessional boundaries in healthcare operations more complex and blurred than ever. We thereby build on a research tradition that recognises the healthcare sector as a negotiated order, specifically studying how professional identities are invoked, constructed, and re-constructed in everyday work interactions. The perspective is employed in an analysis of qualitative data from interviews and participant observation at a large Swedish hospital, in which we find three main processes in the construction of space of action: hierarchical, inclusive, and pseudo-inclusive. In most of the interactions, existing inter-professional divides and power relations are sustained, preventing developments towards integrated interprofessional teamwork.

Abstract This article is to argue that virtue is experienced and understood in Confucian ethics as power to act and as performance of a moral action, and that virtue (de 德) as such has to be onto-cosmologically explicated, not just teleologically explained. In other words, it is intended to construct an integrative theory of virtues based on both dao (the Way 道) and de. To do so, we will examine the two features of de, as the power that is derived from self-reflection and self-restraining, and as the motivated action for attaining its practical end in a community. Only by a self-integrated moral consciousness can one’s experience, action and ideal remain in consistency and coherence, which leads us to the Aristotelian notion of virtue as excellence (aretê) and enables us to see how virtue as aretê could be introduced as a second feature of de, namely as the power for effective action in the whole system of virtues, apart from the first feature of de as self-restraining power. We will conclude that reason and virtue are practically united and remain inseparable, and that taking into account the onto-cosmological foundation of virtues, reason and virtue are inevitably the moving and advancing forces for the formation and transformation of human morality just as they are motivating and prompting incentives for individual moral action.

In this paper we present a multi-dimensional analysis of the closure of Woolworths in Wales and the way in which the loss of this familiar high-street brand can be accounted for at a number of levels and within different social arenas. Primarily, the paper demonstrates how Woolworths is positioned as a symbol of a previous era of consumption centred upon community and place based notions of nostalgia and community. What is striking in the analysis is the similarities in the way in which Woolworths is mobilised as a symbol by the general public and elites; albeit with varying outcomes and affects. In presenting the analysis the paper demonstrates a processual framing as providing a fruitful approach to the combination of different approaches and fields of inquiry (sociology, geography, and political science) without diminishing their distinct contributions.

This study uses observations and interviews to investigate how the leadership at three Swedish preschools in Sweden has impacted the didactic choices made. Two of these preschools use music as a tool for stimulating language and social development, while the third preschool serves as a comparison. The inspiration that the leadership has brought to each institution is of crucial importance to incorporating music and other activities into the everyday work. This influence has been both restrictive and supportive. Music is said to function as a teaching tool, while other functions remain in the background. This contradiction and its implications are discussed, and it is argued that further training should include developing the teachers’ musical-didactic awareness. Principals are most certainly role models at preschools and need to be aware of it.

AbstractThis article focuses on the production and dissemination of photographic images by serving US soldiers in Iraq who are photographing their experiences and posting them on the Internet. This form of visual communication – in real time and communal – is new in the representation of warfare; in earlier wars soldiers took photographs, but these were not immediately shared in the way websites can disseminate images globally. This digital generation of soldiers exist in a new relationship to their experience of war; they are now potential witnesses and sources within the documentation of events, not just the imaged actors – a blurring of roles that reflects the correlations of revolutions in military and media affairs. This photography documents the everyday experiences of the soldiers and its historical significance may reside less in the controversial or revelatory images but in more mundane documentation of the environments, activities and feelings of American soldiery at war.

My journey to better understand and to live my own WSÁNEĆ legal tradition has always been both complex and incredibly rewarding.  This journey has, at times, also come with its challenges and tensions, including through law school and academia.  Through the use of story I reflect upon this path of learning, and many of my own thoughts and experiences along the way.  I have learned, and continue to learn, from many different people along this path, and I am so grateful to each of them.  While this story is primarily a self-reflection, the themes and tensions that the character of this story (Cedar) embodies may resonant with many Indigenous people.  These themes include family, community, place, identity, stories, law and culture.  Each of these themes comes together and to life in this story through lived experience and my own empowering moments of living and coming to better understand WSÁNEĆ law.  Ultimately, writing this story helped me in a moment when I needed it.  My hope is that you too can find something helpful and rewarding within this story, and that you can use that along your own path. Le périple que j’ai fait pour mieux comprendre et vivre ma propre tradition juridique dans la communauté WSÁNEĆ a toujours été à la fois complexe et incroyablement enrichissant. Bien entendu, cette expérience a également donné lieu à des défis et des tensions, notamment à l’école de droit et dans le milieu universitaire. À l’aide d’un récit, je décris mon cheminement et bon nombre de mes propres réflexions et expériences connexes. Tout au long de mon parcours, j’ai appris et je continue d’apprendre auprès de nombreuses personnes différentes et je leur en suis infiniment reconnaissant. Bien que ce récit soit d’abord et avant tout une autoréflexion, il se pourrait que de nombreux Autochtones retrouvent une part d’eux-mêmes dans les thèmes abordés et les tensions vécues par le personnage central (Cedar). Qu’il s’agisse de la famille, de la communauté, du lieu, de l’identité, du droit ou de la culture, j’aborde chacun de ces thèmes en décrivant des expériences réelles et le cheminement qui m’a permis de mieux comprendre la loi WSÁNEĆ. En définitive, l’écriture de ce récit s’est révélée une expérience positive pour moi à un moment où j’avais besoin d’aide. J’espère que vous trouverez à votre tour des éléments utiles et éclairants dans ce récit et que vous pourrez vous en inspirer au cours de votre propre cheminement.
