Drawing on Tinto's (1987, 1993) theory of student integration, this research examines students who withdrew from their original institution prior to graduation. Of this group, some of the students who withdraw do so to transfer to another institution, and it is reasonable to assume that these students are different in many ways from students who withdraw and do not continue their education. Thus, the purpose of this effort is to provide a better understanding of the characteristics of students who leave their original institution so that intervention strategies can be more carefully targeted to the individual needs of these two groups. Results of the logistic regression analysis concur with some aspects of the existing literature on institutional departure; however, this study of systemic departure differs on several key points. The implications for the findings are then discussed in terms of their impact on the design institutional retention programs.

Abstract Aim Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among Irish teenagers has risen significantly. In 2019, prevalence of current use (last 30 days) among 15–17-year-olds was 17.3%. We examine social determinants of adolescent e-cigarette current use. Subject and methods A stratified random sample of 50 schools in Ireland was surveyed in 2019, part of the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs (ESPAD), with 3495 students aged 15, 16, and 17. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression [providing adjusted odds ratios (AORs)] analyses were performed using Stata version 16. Results Current e-cigarette users were more likely to be male (AOR = 0.55, 95% CI:0.32–0.96, p < .01), younger (AOR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.17–0.67, p = < .05), to participate in sport (AOR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.05–4.65, p < .05), to have higher-educated parents (maternal higher education: AOR = 27.54, 95% CI: 1.50–505.77, p = < .05, paternal higher education: AOR = 2.44, 95% CI: 1.00–5.91, p < .05), and less likely to consider their families better off (AOR = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.13–0.65, p < .01), or to report familial support (AOR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.64–0.95, p < .05). They were more likely to be cigarette smokers (AOR = 7.22, 95% CI: 3.97–13.12, p < .001), to report problem cannabis use (AOR = 3.12, 95% CI: 1.40–6.93, p < .01), to be ‘binge’ drinkers (AOR = 1.81, 95% CI : 1.00–3.32, p = .054), and to have friends who get drunk (AOR = 5.30, 95% CI: 1.34–20.86, p < .05). Conclusion Boys, smokers, binge drinkers, problem cannabis users, and sport-playing teenagers from higher-educated families, are at particular risk. As the number of young people using e-cigarettes continues to rise, including teenagers who have never smoked, improved regulation of e-cigarettes, similar to other tobacco-related products, is needed urgently to prevent this worrying new trend of initiation into nicotine addiction.

The aim of this study is to analyze the selection process of teacher candidates in Turkey and Austria education systems. In the study, the Upper Austria Higher Education documents on the selection processes were examined and the teacher candidates' selection processes were observed. For the Turkish side, the higher education selection handbooks by Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) were examined and 96 teacher candidates were interviewed. According to the findings, in Austria's teacher education system, the students should volunteer to be a teacher and also must fulfill compliance of the profession. In Turkey, on the other hand, the teacher candidates were selected according to the central examination results conducted by ÖSYM. While scores are taken into account in the areas such as mathematics, social sciences, science, geometry, etc., the evaluation related to the individual reasons for seeking this profession, individuals' eligibility of the teaching profession and personal characteristics are not considered in this selection process. The interview results revealed that while some of the candidates were willing to become a teacher, others reported obligation to do so and some stated that they accidently selected to be a teacher.

Abstract Background and study aims Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) elastography (EUS-E) and contrast-enhanced harmonic EUS (CH-EUS) are useful methods for the diagnosis of pancreatic lesions. This study aims to compare the accuracy of combined EUS-E and CH-EUS with that of EUS-E or CH-EUS alone in the differential diagnosis of pancreatic solid lesions. Patients and methods One hundred thirty-six patients with solid pancreatic lesions underwent EUS with both EUS-E and CH-EUS were included. Diagnoses were classified as adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine tumor (NET), and inflammatory pseudotumor in 95, 22, and 19 patients, respectively. EUS records in each case were rearranged into 3 groups: EUS-E, CH-EUS, and combination. Each modality was randomly reviewed by 3 reviewers with different levels of clinical experience. Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of each modality according to each diagnosis group were evaluated. For the combined diagnosis populations, the proportions of correct diagnoses among the 3 modalities were compared by using the multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results The accuracies of EUS-E, CH-EUS, and the combination of them were 68.4 %, 65.4 %, and 75.7 %, respectively, for adenocarcinoma group; 83.8 %, 82.4 %, and 86.8 % for NET group; 80.1 %, 78.7 %, and 81.6 % for inflammatory pseudotumor group. The multivariate logistic regression analysis for the combined diagnosis populations showed that the proportion of correct diagnoses when EUS-E and CH-EUS were combined was slightly higher than with the other 2 modalities, although the significant differences among them were not observed. Conclusion EUS-E and CH-EUS combined may improve differential diagnosis of solid pancreatic lesions compared with use of the individual modalities.

Introduction: This study examined the association between increased alcohol consumption and telecommuting, comparing employees who expressed a preference for telecommuting and those who did not. Methods: We conducted an internet monitor survey. Responses from 20,395 of the 33,302 participants were included in the final sample. Participants were asked about their desire for and frequency of telecommuting, and about changes in alcohol consumption under the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were analyzed by logistic regression analysis. Results: Participants who telecommuted despite preferring not to do so reported significantly increased alcohol consumption, as revealed by a multivariate analysis (OR=1.62, 95% CI 1.25-2.12). Participants who expressed a preference for telecommuting showed no such increase. Conclusions: Under the COVID-19 pandemic, telecommuting that involves a mismatch with employee preference for way of working may be a new risk factor for problematic drinking.

The present study examines police officer attitudes and responses to domestic violence on a sample of 520 officers in a southern Chinese city. The police officers were asked to respond to two vignette scenarios depicting husbands assaulting their wives. The results show high correlations between officer responses to the two vignettes: Husbands are much more likely to be arrested than wives. The results of logistic regression analysis reveal that officers who view their profession as that of a law enforcer are more likely to arrest either husbands or wives. Officers who believe domestic violence to be a private matter are less inclined to arrest husbands, while those who hold profeminist attitudes are more inclined to do so. Finally, the implications are considered for further understanding of police responses to domestic violence in the Chinese context.

Neospora caninum is a parasitic protozoan that causes abortion, stillbirth, and premature culling in goats. The aims of this study were (i) to determine the prevalence of anti-N. caninum antibodies in goats in the Adana province of Turkey(ii), to identify risk factors for the disease, and (iii) to provide collective data on goat neosporosis. For this purpose, 383 sera were collected from goats of different breeds, ages, and sexes from 15 counties of Adana. A commercially available c-ELISA test kit was used to detect anti-N. caninum antibodies. To identify risk factors that influence the prevalence of neosporosis, an oral survey was conducted, and the data collected were evaluated by the logistic regression analysis. The prevalence was determined as 8.9% (34/383) at the individual level and 66.6% (10/15) at the flock level. Statistical analysis indicated that the co-presence of sheep, the animals’ being of pure breed and the purchasing of animals from different flocks are the factors that increase the prevalence of neosporosis, while feeder disinfection decreases it.

ABSTRACT Purpose To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the Pentacam topometric indices derived from the corneal surface curvature to distinguish between normal and keratoconic corneas. Methods The study consisted of 226 normal corneas from 113 patients and 88 keratoconic eyes from 44 patients. Eyes were defined as keratoconus based on comprehensive ocular examination, including Placido-disk-based corneal topography (Atlas Corneal Topography System; Humphrey, San Leandro, California) and rotating Scheimpflug corneal tomography (Pentacam HR; Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany). Corneal Topometric indices ISV, IVA, KI, CKI, IHA and IHD, along with the TKC (Topometric Keratoconus Classification) score were calculated from the Pentacam HR exam. Statistical analysis were accomplished using BioEstat 5.0 (Instituto Mamiraua, Amazonas, Brazil) and MedCalc 12.0 (MedCalc Software, Mariakerke, Belgium) using unpaired nonparametric Mann Whitney test (Wilcoxon ranked-sum). ROC curves were calculated for each topometric parameter to determine the best cut off values from the significantly different parameters. A logistic regression analysis was performed to provide a combined parameter for optimizing accuracy. Results Statistical significant differences were found between keratoconic and normal corneas for all topometric indices (Mann Whitney, p < 0.05). There were four false negative cases among the keratoconic cases on the TKC classification (4.54%) and 16 false positive cases among normal (7.08%), so that the sensitivity and specificity of the TKC were 95.54 and 92.92% respectively. The areas under the ROC curves (AUC) for the individual topometric indices varied from 0.843 (CKI) and 0.992 (ISV). The sensitivity and specificity of the most accurate ISV were 97.7 and 96.5% respectively. The calculated parameter from logistic regression had AUC of 0.996, with sensitivity of 97.7% and specificity of 98.7%. Conclusion Pentacam topometric indices were useful for distinguishing between normal and keratoconic corneas. The TKC classification should be expected to have false positives and negatives and should not be considered alone. TKC had more false positives and false negatives than some individual topometric parameters. A novel combined parameter based on logistic regression analysis may improve accuracy for the diagnosis of keratoconus. Further studies are necessary to evaluate if adding other curvature derived indices is beneficial for the regression analysis, as well as for testing the sensitivity of such parameters for the diagnosis of milder forms of ectasia and for testing correlations with severity of the disease. Aims: The aim of this study was to find out whether health and financial factors are associated with engagement in paid work during a disability pension. Methods: The data included a 10 per cent sample of Finns aged 20–62 years who were drawing earnings-related full or partial disability pension in 2012 ( n = 14,418). Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios for working while on a full or partial disability pension. Results: Fourteen per cent of full disability pensioners and 76 per cent of partial disability pensioners were engaged in paid work. Full disability pensioners due to mental disorders were working less often than full disability pensioners due to other diseases. Partial disability pensioners due to cardiovascular diseases were working more than partial disability pensioners due to other diseases. More recent timing of disability pension was associated with working for both partial and full disability pensioners. Working while on disability pension was more common among those with higher education. Partial disability pensioners with average pension worked more often than those with high pension. Conclusions: By knowing the factors associated with working while on a disability pension, policies could be more efficiently allocated to encourage disability pensioners to take up work. One way would be to support disability pensioners with low education to work more. Another way to increase work among disability pensioners is to support the recently retired in working longer.

This study expounds empirical evaluation of (a) the interrelation between higher education expenditure and the share of highly qualified employed population of Ukraine, (b) the dependence of the population qualification level on the higher education expenditure in foreign countries and (c) the dependence of these countries’ GDP on the qualification of people. It has been hypothesized that an increase in funding for higher education contributes to the growth of the share of highly qualified population and the GDP volume per capita. The regression analysis results indicate inverse dependence of the population's qualification on real expenditure on higher education in Ukraine, that is, as the expenditure decreases, the share of population with high qualification increases, while the number of higher school teachers goes down. This situation is inconsistent with economic theory and is fraught with long-term adverse consequences for the national economy. The analysis of the average figures in 24 foreign countries has not revealed a pronounced dependence of the population qualification on expenditure on higher education and that of GDP on qualification. Nevertheless, the general trend is observed, i.e., in the countries with heavier expenditure on higher education there is a higher percentage of qualified population and higher GDP. The same trend, but in a more explicit form, has been established based on the results of regression analysis for the individual EU countries, confirming the research hypothesis.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to evaluate contrasting policy approaches towards undeclared work. To do so, evidence is reported from 1,000 face-to-face interviews conducted in Croatia during 2013. Logistic regression analysis reveals no association between participation in undeclared work and the perceived level of penalties and risk of detection, but a strong association between participation in undeclared work and the level of tax morality. It thus confirms recent calls for the conventional direct controls approach, which seeks to deter engagement in undeclared work by increasing the penalties and risk of detection, to be replaced by an indirect controls approach which seeks to improve tax morality so as to encourage greater self-regulation and a culture of commitment to compliance. The implications for theory and policy are then discussed.
