BACKGROUND Adolescent pregnancies and sexually-transmitted infections continue to impact 15 – 19-year-olds across the globe. The lack of sexual reproductive health information in resource-limited settings can often be due to cultural and societal attitudes to adolescent sexual reproductive health. Innovative approaches, including mobile phone technologies, are needed to address the need for adolescent reproductive health information. OBJECTIVE To design and develop a mobile app prototype to provide confidential adolescent reproductive health information on demand and evaluate its usability and user experience. METHODS A human-centered design methodology was applied. This practice framework allowed the perspectives and feedback of adolescent users to be included in the iterative design process. Field usability testing enabled the adolescents to provide feedback on the functionality, usability, and usefulness of the app. RESULTS During the usability test, 62 (54.9%) of the adolescents that were followed-up had used the app at least once, 30 (48.4%) of these were male participants and 32 (51.6%) female. The app was described as ‘very interesting’ to use by 44 (70.9%) participants, 20 male and 24 female. The content was deemed to be either ‘perfectly’ or ‘well targeted’ on sexual reproductive health by 60 (96.7%) adolescents, and the app was rated ‘best app’ by 45 (72.6%) adolescents, 27 female and 18 male, with a p-value = 0.011. CONCLUSIONS A mobile phone app is a feasible and acceptable way to deliver adolescent sexual reproductive health information in resource-limited settings. The USSD mobile phone technology could deliver confidential information on demand.

BACKGROUND : Adolescents transitioning from childhood to adulthood need to be equipped with sexual reproductive health (SRH) knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that empower them. Accessible, reliable, appropriate, and friendly information can be provided through mobile phone-based health interventions. OBJECTIVE This study will investigate the effectiveness and impact of an Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD)-based mobile phone app in: i) increasing adolescents’ knowledge about contraceptives, gender-based stereotypes, sexually-transmitted infections (STIs), abstinence, and perceived vulnerability; and ii) helping adolescents make informed decisions about their sexual reproductive health. METHODS A randomized control trial (RCT) methodology was applied to investigate the potential of a USSD-based app for providing on-demand SRH information to adolescents in Kibra, Nairobi County, Kenya. RESULTS During the RCT, 62 (54.9%) adolescents used the USSD-based app at least once; 30 (48.4%) of these were male and 32 (51.6%) female participants. The intervention improved knowledge of contraceptives to p-value 0.1411. Information on STIs was of particular interest, with 27.0% (20) of the adolescents seeking information in this area; 55% (11) of these were female. In relation to improved decision making, 21.6% (29) of the adolescents were able to identify STIs and likely to seek treatment; 51.7% (15) of these were female. Ease of use was the most important feature of the app for 28.3% (54) of the participants. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents require accurate and up-to-date SRH information to guide their decision making and improve health outcomes. As adolescents already use mobile phones in their day-to-day life, apps provide an ideal platform for this information.

Abstract Background Mobile technologies to improve blood pressure control in resource-limited settings are needed. We adapted and evaluated the acceptability and feasibility of PositiveLinks, a mobile phone application for self-monitoring, social support, and engagement in care for people living with HIV, among patients with hypertension in rural Uganda. Methods We enrolled adults on treatment for hypertension at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital and Mbarara Municipal health center IV, southwestern Uganda. We provided and educated all participants on the use of PositiveLinks application and automated blood pressure monitors. We administered a baseline questionnaire and performed in-depth interviews 30 days later to explore acceptability, feasibility, medication adherence, social support, and blood pressure control. Results A total of 37 participants completed the interviews, mean age of 58 years (SD 10.8) and 28 (75.7%) were female. All participants embraced the PositiveLinks mobile app and were enthusiastic about self-monitoring of blood pressure, 35 (94.6%) experienced peer to peer support. Among the 35 participants non-adherent to medications at baseline, 31 had improved medication adherence. All except 1 of the 31(83.8%) who had uncontrolled blood pressure at baseline, had self-reported controlled blood pressure after 30 days of use of PositiveLinks. Conclusion Patients with hypertension in rural Uganda embraced the PositiveLinks mobile application and had improved medication adherence, social support, and blood pressure control. Further assessment of cost-effectiveness of the application in blood pressure control in resource-limited settings will be pursued in future studies.

Adolescent reproductive health becomes a serious problem. Many adolescents experience unwanted pregnancy to HIV / AIDS. It is hoped that UKS can become a forum to improve students' abilities and skills in shaping healthy behavior. The purpose of the study was to analyze the implementation of UKS in the delivery of information on adolescent reproductive health in Medan AN NIZAM Middle School in 2019. The research method uses mixed methods with a sequential explanatory approach, a population of 164 people, a quantitative sample using a total population while qualitative informants 4 people. Data analysis was performed univariately, bivariate using chi-square, multivariate using multiple logistic regression at a confidence level of 95% (α = 0.05) and depth interview of informants. Quantitative research results show that variables that influence the analysis of the implementation of UKS in the delivery of reproductive health information are knowledge (Pvalue = 0.008) and attitude (Pvalue = 0.001). Qualitative research results show that students have received good reproductive health information but the UKS activities are not going well so that it affects students' attitudes in implementing UKS. It is expected that the active role of the school, teachers, and the entire school community in implementing UKS, as well as cooperation between related parties will be further enhanced so that the implementation of UKS is more optimal

Keywords : School Health Business (UKS), Reproductive Health, Knowledge, Attitude, Infrastructure Facilities, Human Resources (HR)

Background Kenya has a high prevalence of adolescent pregnancy and low access to and use of adolescent sexual reproductive health services. Despite the enactment of evidence-based policies to address this problem, adolescents continue to face health problems and barriers to adolescent sexual reproductive health information and services. Main objective This study describes barriers to and facilitators of access to adolescent sexual and reproductive health services in Kisumu and Kakamega counties, Kenya. Methodology We used a qualitative design. Through 61 data collection sessions, 113 participants were engaged in key informant interviews, in-depth interviews, and/or focus group discussions. Trained Research Assistants (RAs) engaged adolescents, health care workers, teachers, county leaders, and community representatives. Data were captured using audio recorders and field notes. Socio-demographic data were analyzed for descriptive statistics, while audio recordings were transcribed, translated, and coded. Thematic analysis was done with NVivo. Results Findings show that the barriers of access to sexual reproductive health services and information were negative health workers’ attitudes, distance to the health facility, unaffordable cost of services, negative social cultural influences, lack of privacy and confidentiality. Facilitators to adolescent sexual reproductive health services were few and included getting priority for school going adolescents and enabling environment for partnerships on adolescent health issues. Conclusions Adolescents in Kakamega and Kisumu face a myriad of barriers when seeking sexual reproductive health information and/or health services. We recommend that counties sensitize all stakeholders on adolescent sexual reproductive health problems, and support development of multi-sectoral, sustainable solutions to adolescent health needs.
