This is a white paper submitted as part of the joint NIH/NSF-funded event, "Imagining Tomorrow’s University: Rethinking scholarship, education, and institutions for an open, networked era", to be held March 8th and 9th in Rosemont, IL. In this paper I present my personal (not my employer's) thoughts and reflections on the role that open research can play in defining the purpose and activities of the university. I have made some specific recommendations on how I believe the public university can recommit and push the boundaries of its role as the creator and promoter of public knowledge. In doing so, serving a vital role to the continued economic, social, and technological development of society. I have also included some thoughts on how this applies specifically to my field of engineering and how a culture of openness and sharing within the engineering community can help drive societal development.

The election organizer is obliged to implement every principle in the election. The online National Counting System (Situng) is one of a series of election organizer activities in fulfilling the principle of openness to the public. Improving the quality of service in the General Election aims to increase public trust in the implementation of elections. According to Nunkoo, the principles of transparency and knowledge must be possessed by activity organizers in an effort to increase public trust. Research with this quantitative method looks at how much influence the online national counting system (situng) information (study of the 2019 Election results) has with a study on the people of Medan City. The findings in this study indicate that the process of transparency and increasing knowledge of the people of Medan City has significantly shaped Public Trust in the 2019 Election. The act of transparency has a bigger effect than increasing knowledge of online counting. Given the large role of transparency in shaping public trust in Medan City, this activity needs to be further enhanced to provide a better understanding to the public. And it does not rule out that online situng can increase public knowledge in the electoral field. Situng online is also expected to be an extension of the General Election Commission (KPU) in increasing public knowledge as a basis for experience in the election.

This text discusses sound art projects in which artists have used augmented reality along with recordings or data of public spaces. All the works mentioned here were carried out in Spain from 2010 to 2016. In them, memories become tied to the physical space through social interactions facilitated by communication technologies; listeners get involved through the use of mobile devices. These practices consider the role of sound in the display of memories in the public space, thus configuring a subjective memory that contrasts with the institutional narrations of the history of a place.

With the advancement of technology in various aspects of life of today's technology allows developers to create applications that aims to facilitate the public in obtaining information based on mobile. Seeing the importance of the role of astronomy satellites it needs to make a multimedia application with Augmented Reality technology that can provide an overview and brief specifications on astronomy satellite without having to go to the planetarium or observatory. This research is using MDLC (Multimedia Development Life Cycle) framework. The process of assembly (pemasangan) was performed using Unity and Vuforia library. The result is a book containing related image about NASA’s astronomy satellites which functioned as a marker and an Augmented Reality application based on Android that is capable of displaying NASA’s astronomical satellites on the top of marker that can display brief information about the shape and its parts when touched on the screen. The application that has been made function properly and in accordance with the concept and design. The ideal condition of using the application in places exposed to light with the intensity of 108,3 ± 2,5 lux upwards. In addition the camera is directed to the distance between 10-75 cm of the marker and the angle between 40 ± 0,5 O – 140 ± 0,5 O .. The greater the intensity of the light does not affect the sensitivity of the camera to detect the marker increases. In other words, the marker will not be detected if the distance marker on the camera more than 75 cm and the angle of the camera marker less than 40 ± 0,5 O or more than 140 ± 0,5 O though the light intensity is greater.

Pathology has been mostly invisible for the public. The missing recognition affects the pathologists’ reputation, and efforts with recruitment and advocacy. Our survey with 387 respondents confirms that the public knowledge on the role of the pathologists has not improved despite campaigns and advocacy efforts. Pathology was identified as a medical specialty by 79.1% of the respondents. Only 34.8% assumed that it takes more than 8 years of post-high school training to become a pathologist. Most commonly, another medical specialist was identified as the ultimate diagnostician on Pap tests (gynaecologist), breast biopsies or malignant surgical excisions (oncologist), gastrointestinal biopsies (gastroenterologist) or prostate biopsies (urologist). The experience gained by undergoing these procedures had minimal impact on understanding the pathologists’ role, since they were identified as ultimate diagnosis makers by the minority of these patients (13.8%–36.4%). The integration of pathologist–interactions into patient care may be a potential solution with benefits beyond improved perceptions.

Suction has usually been regarded as the primary functional mean for attachment in sea star and sea urchin tube feet and this hypothesis has become widespread in the public knowledge. Yet, a few studies have suggested that adhesive secretions may also play a prominent role in tube foot attachment. Here we use a morphological and biomechanical approach to investigate the role of suction in asteroid and echinoid tube foot attachment. Microscopic observations of tube feet rapidly fixed while they were attached to a smooth substratum show that their distal surfaces are totally flat and lack a suction cavity. Detachment force and tenacity of a single tube foot appear to be independent of the pulling angle: i.e., the introduction of a shear component in the pulling force does not decrease attachment strength as would be expected for a sucker. Moreover, sea urchin tube feet attach as strongly to perforated surfaces, which preclude pressure reduction, as to their unperforated counterparts. Taken together, these results clearly show that echinoderm tube feet rely on adhesive secretions and not on suction.

Abstract: Heritage institutions traditionally function as subtle hegemonic devices for the production and public representation of knowledge, meaning, and belonging. This article looks at the role of public intellectuals called heritage interpreters who work at heritage institutions as agents of knowledge production. The concept of the public sphere is considered in relation to Gramsci’s ideas on hegemony, the intellectual, and praxis to offer an expanded view of communicative production at heritage institutions. The article explores the interpreter’s role resisting ideological hegemony and commodification, and in creating spaces and conversations for alternative imaginings of and struggle toward public knowledge and radical pedagogy.
