Blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) known as “SS” (Super Shrimp) originated as wild larvae from Panama, and is currently in its 22nd generation of domestication. They have undergone a systematic process of selection for enhancement of growth and fecundity, and in particular, for resistance improvement to the IHHN virus. The SS-blue shrimp are significantly more tolerant to low water temperatures than Penaeus monodon or Litopenaeus vannamei. This characteristic was effluent to the broodstock management of blue shrimp. The critical phase of larval rearing is on the interchange from zoea to mysis, but almost no mortality on the post larvae stadium.  It was observed during larvae rearing using modulation system indicated by the survival rate of nauplius to PL 5 was 29%, but PL 5 to PL 15 reached 97%.  Growth of larvae and post larvae in the modulation and non modulation systems were not significant different, but performance and uniformity of the seed in modulation system shown better.  Its avarage production in grow out pond was 9,000 kg/ha with final survival rate of 74.5-94.8%, and avarage daily growth (ADG) of 0.176 g. The ponds were stocked with SS-shrimp at densities of 33-38/m2.

Artemia sp. is a common natural feed for shrimps at the post-larvae stage and is characterized by poor lipid content. Therefore, Artemia is commonly enriched with specific nutrition, including biofloc. This contains some useful nutrients in the form of protein and polyhydroxy butyrate (PHB). The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of Artemia enriched with biofloc on the growth performance of black tiger shrimp, P. Monodon, and whiteleg shrimp P. vannamei. This research used acompletely randomized design (CRD), encompassing three treatments of feed and four replications. The tested treatments include: (a) Artemia sp. without enriched (b) Artemia enriched with biofloc, and (c) biofloc without Artemia, and the treatments were fed on black tiger as well as whiteleg shrimp post-larvae for 15 days. The results showed the significant effect of using  Artemia sp. enriched with biofloc on the growth of P. monodon and P. vannamei, but not on the survival rate. However, both parameters were significantly influenced for post-larvae shrimp at a dose of 30 mL biofloc. This served as a nutritional source by providing the best growth of 14.57 mg and 15 mg at a daily growth and survival rate of 0.86 mg day-1: 98% and 1.4 mg day-1: 99% for P. vannamei and P. monodon, respectively.

<p>This research was conducted to determine natural food substitution time by artificial diet   after salinity acclimatization from 20 ppt until 2 ppt, which can increase survival and growth of (<em>Litopenaeus vannamei</em>) postlarvae during rearing period. Design experiment was completely randomized design with five treatments and three replications of natural food <em>Chironomus</em> sp.  (60% of crude protein) substitution time by artificial diet (40% of crude protein) at day: 1 (A), 7 (B), 14 (C), 21 (D) and full natural food without artificial diet (E) during 28 days rearing period. White shrimp postlarvae and rearing media in this experiment based from best result of earlier research that is PL25 from acclimatization in media 2 ppt with addition of potassium 25 ppm to freshwater media.  The densities of PL25 white shrimp were 20 PLs/50 liters of 2 ppt media. The result of this experiment showed that the use of artificial diet as soon as after salinity acclimatization (PL25) gave best performance production compared to which only that was given natural food <em>Chironomus</em> sp. during experiment or with treatment by artificial diet substitution at day-7, day-14 or day-21, shown with the highest value of food consumption level, protein retention, energy retention, daily growth rate and food efficiency. Survival rate of PL54 was above 80% and not significant different between treatment. That is supported by chemical-physical value of water quality still in range appropriate to survival rate of white shrimp post larvae during a rearing period. The result of this experiment indicated that requirement nutrient of PL25 in low salinity did not fulfilled if only rely on natural food, so that require artificial diet with nutrition content to support growth and survival rate of white shrimp post larvae more maximal.</p> <p>Key words: salinity, natural food, artificial diet, Pacific white shrimp</p> <p> </p> <p>ABSTRAK</p> <p>Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan waktu penggantian pakan alami oleh pakan buatan yang tepat selama masa pemeliharaan postlarva udang vaname di media bersalinitas rendah setelah melalui masa aklimatisasi penurunan salinitas dari 20 ppt hingga 2 ppt, sehingga dapat meningkatkan pertumbuhan dan kelangsungan hidup.

Masing-masing perlakuan terdiri atas empat ulangan. Nilai laju pertumbuhan harian panjang cangkang larva abalon yang paling rendah dijumpai pada larva yang diberi pakan tepung Ulva sp. (146,07 ± 1,73 µm/hari).The most common problem in abalone seed production is the high mortality occurrence (> 90%) after postlarvae settlement to the rearing plates. The use of microparticle diets to replace the natural feed of postlarval has been performed on various species of fish, shrimp, and abalone. This research aims to determine the most effective and suitable powder-based feed to support the survival and growth of abalone Haliotis squamata larvae. The experiments consisted of five feed treatments, i.e., Spirulina sp., Ulva sp., Chaetoceros sp., and Gracilaria sp. Flour, and diatoms (as control). Each treatment had four replicates. The powder-based feed used in each treatment was firstly mixed with a solution of agar powder (7.5 mg/mL sea water, 40°C) with a concentration of 40 mg of flour/mL of agar solution. Feeding was done every three days by spraying the feed solution onto the surface of the larval rearing plate. The study was conducted for 30 days. The results showed that survival rate of abalone larvae fed with Spirulina sp. flour was the highest and significantly different (P<0.05) compared with those given diatoms, Chaetoceros sp. and Ulva sp. flours, which were 81.49%, 79.25%, 76.57%, and 76.46%, respectively, and not significantly different from those fed with Gracilaria sp. 81.37% (P>0.05). The highest daily growth rate of the shell length of abalone larvae was achieved by larvae fed with Gracilaria sp. (203.81 ± 1.23 ¼m/day) and Spirulina sp. flours (205.47 ± 1.71 µm/day). The lowest daily growth rate of shell length was found on abalone larvae fed with Ulva sp. flour (146.07 ± 1.73 µm/day).

AbstractThe aim of this study was to monitor water quality in vaname culture pond and compare the application of different rearing culture system and feeding variations. Four ponds culture were used as vaname (Litopenaeus vannamei) growth place. Measured parameters include physical and chemical factors such as temperature, brightness, pH, DO, salinity, ammonia, and alkalinity, while growth shrimp performance showed by SGR, SR and FCR. The research result of the water quality parameters show an adequate range values for all of the ponds and good enough for shrimp growth, and especially an optimum range value presented in pond three and four. Survival rate (SR) both pond 3 and 4 exhibit a good presentation that is more than 80%, whereas pond 1 and 2 were just less than 70% of SR value. The specific growth rate (SGR) presents also a good presentation in Pond 3 and 4 rather than pond 1 and 2. Based on the feed consumption, pond 1 and 2 show high FCR that is more than 1.7 while pond 3 and 4 present smaller FCR value which is less than 1.7. Finally, it could be concluded that application of floc in culture rearing system of pond 3 and 4 increase water quality and production value than pond 1 and 2.

Asian moon scallop, Amusium pleuronectes, is among the most common commercially harvested scallop in the Philippines. This study investigated suitable conditioning methods, induced spawning, and documented scallop larval development at the Marine Fisheries Research and Development Center (MFRDC) Guiuan, Eastern Samar. Scallops held in tanks with flow-through water system without substrate yielded high survival rate of 48.06 ± 5.95%. Optimum water temperature was 28-29°C for maintaining scallops. Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans were suitable microalgal feed for A. pleuronectes consumed at 7,388,888 cells min-1 per scallop. These significant results were applied in maintaining scallops at the hatchery. As a result, scallops with an average 19.8 mm shell length (SL) reached 37.5 mm SL within four months with a survival rate of 96.57 ± 2.04%, average daily growth rate (ADGR) of 0.13 ± 0.04 mm.day-1, and specific growth rate (SGR) of 3.92 ± 1.31%.d-1. Natural spawning was successful under controlled conditions while induced spawning trial through thermal stimulation, food shock, sexual stimulation, and serotonin injection resulted unsuccessful release of sperm and eggs. The estimated number of fertilized eggs per spawning ranged from 0.22-1.4 million. Fertilized eggs appeared spherical and dark in color with 54.2-62.57 µm in diameter. After nine hours, the larvae developed into trochophore stage with 59.08-84.4 µm in length. D-veliger with 120.37-157.07µm shell length developed after 24 hours. Development of the early umbone stage was reached on day 5; and on day 7, the umbo larvae become well-developed with shell length of 135.45-173.36 µm. On day 9, pedi-veligers were observed in the culture. Spat grew 312.41-509.48 µm on day 16 and survived until four months with final shell length of 4-10 mm. For the larval rearing, stocking density of A. pleuronectes larvae observed highest survival rate of 0.04 ± 0.03% at 200 larvae/L, while no larvae survived at 800 larvae/L due to contamination of protozoans in the culture medium.
