Objective: This research aims to analyze the ability of robusta coffee leaves fraction extract to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and also determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Methods: Antibacterial activity evaluated by the disc diffusion method observed in four types of fraction of extract robusta coffee leaves (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and water). Each extract divided into three various concentrations, 5%, 10%, and 15%. Determination of antimicrobial activity in vitro by the disk diffusion method. Results: Ethyl acetate fraction of coffee leaves extract produced the largest diameter zone of inhibition of bacterial growth compared to other extraction fractions of 17.28 mm in E. coli and 18.58 mm in S. aureus. The MIC of coffee leaves extract fraction water, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane on E. coli and S. aureus is 5%, while the fraction ethanol MIC is 10%. Conclusion: The antibacterial effect of ethyl acetate fraction of coffee leaves extract showed an antibacterial effect that was better than the fraction of n-hexane, ethanol, and water.

ABSTRACT Marine biota such as algae has been developed to be used as a source of medicinal raw materials in the pharmaceutical industry. Extracs from Turbinaria ornata algae J. Agardh showed antibacterial activity. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the Turbinaria ornata (Turner) J. Agardh fraction obtained from the waters of the Manado Bay against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. The method used in this study is an experimental laboratory. Turbinaria ornata (Turner) J. Agardh was extracted by maceration method with ethanol 96% solvent followed by fractionation and antibacterial activity testing with diffusion method. Antibacterial activity was determined based on the results of the clear zone measurements formed around the disc paper. Infection is one of the main causes of world health problems, especially in developing countries like Indonesia, one of which is an acute respiratory infection caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Therapeutics are used for the treatment of infections today with antibiotics. However, there are many cases of bacterial resistance to antibiotics that need to develop alternatives derived from plants. One of the plants that have antibacterial activity is the leaves of Waru Gunung (Hibiscus macrophyllus). The purpose of this study was to determine whether the ethanolic extract of H. macrophyllus leaves and their fractions have antibacterial activity against S. aureus. The method used in this antibacterial activity test is the disk diffusion method with a test concentration of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. The results of this study indicate that all test samples have antibacterial activity except in the water fraction. The highest antibacterial activity was obtained in the ethyl acetate fraction which attracted semipolar compounds in the ethanolic extract of H. macrophyllus leaves. The antibacterial activity of the test samples in sequence from high to low includes ethyl acetate fraction, ethanolic extract, n-hexane fraction, and water fraction.

An exploratory study based on laboratory experiment was carried out to determine the antibacterial effect of Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extract of Aloe vera leaf gel (DAE) against standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. DMSO extract was used in five different concentrations (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 μg/ml). Dose dependent inhibitory effect was seen against the test organisms using disc diffusion method. Zone of inhibition (ZOI) were 8 mm, 13 mm, 15 mm, 16 mm and 21 mm against S. aureus; 0 mm, 8 mm, 13 mm, 15 mm and 18 mm against P. aeruginosa; 8 mm, 11 mm, 13 mm, 16 mm and 20 mm against E. coli; 0 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 14 mm and 18 mm against K. pneumoniae at 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 μg/ml respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was assessed by broth dilution technique. The MICs of DAE for S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli and K. pneumoniae were 300 μg/ml, 400 μg/ml, 400 μg/ml and 450 μg/ml respectively. From the study it was observed that DMSO extract of Aloe vera leaf gel possesses antibacterial effect against the test pathogens. The findings highlight the need for further extensive study to detect and isolate the biologically active ingredients present in the Aloe vera leaves which are responsible for antibacterial effect. Hopefully, that would lead to the discovery of new and more potent antimicrobial agents originated from Aloe vera. Mediscope Vol. 7, No. 2: July 2020, Page 67-74

This study aimed to determine the effect of concentration ethanol extract from tembelakan leaf (Lantana camara Linn)  on bacteria growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Extraction was done by maceration using ethanol 96% and then separated using rotary evaporator. Antibacterial activity test of the ethanol extract by Well agar diffusion method. Variation in crude extract saponin used in this study was 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and positive controls were used for comparison with Amoxicilin and Chloramphenicole concentration of 25 µg/mL and DMSO as a negative control. The results of antibacterial activity test is indicated by the formation of growth inhibitory region S. aureus and E. coli. The result of growth inhibitory regions was analyzed by One way ANOVA. One way ANOVA test results indicate that there are effects of ethanol extract concentration of tembelekan leaf (L. camara Linn) against S. aureus and E. coli. Effective concentration of ethanol extract tembelekan leaf (L. camara Linn) when compared with positive control to inhibit the growth of S. aureus and E. coli is at 25% with a relatively strong antibacterial activity. Test with phytochemicals screening method which is showed that tembelekan leaf contains the flavanoid, saponins, and tannins compounds as antibacterial

ABSTRACT Sponges are one source of producing bioactive components from the sea. Bacteria Symbiosis with sponges are thought to have the potential to produce bioactive compounds that have been isolated from sponges. One of the potential of bioactive compounds which have been found and developed from sponges was antibacterial. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of bacteria associated with Phyllospongia lamellose sponges against pathogenic bacteria namely Staphylococcus aureus and Esherichia coli and then proceed with identification of biochemistry in isolates which showed the greatest inhibitory activity. Three isolates of sponges symbiont bacteria were obtained through the isolation and purification stage which were then followed by testing of antibacterial activity with paper disk diffusion method. The antibacterial test results showed the diameter of the inhibitory zone against Staphylococcus aureus, were: SL1(8.67 mm), SL2 (9.33 mm) and SL3(9.00 mm) categorized as medium. Whereas the inhibiotion zone shown on Esherichia coli bacteria is also classified as medium, were: SL1(9.67 mm), SL2 (9.00 mm) and SL3 (9.33 mm). The three isolates continued to the identification stage biochemically. Each isolation was assumed as follows: Desulfotomaculum (SL1), Brochothrix (SL2) and Sulfidobacillus (SL3). Keyword         :Phyllospongia lamellose, isolation, biochemically identification ABSTRAK Spons merupakan salah satu sumber penghasil komponen bioaktif yang berasal dari laut.
