ABSTRACT Our content analysis conducted in 2007 revealed little evidence of convergence practices in television networks and newspapers owned by Canwest Global, CTVglobemedia, and Quebecor. In 2009 and early 2010, we interviewed executives and journalists of the media groups studied, as well as other stakeholders, to assess the current situation and speculate about the future of convergence in Canada. Respondents generally acknowledged that TV/print newsroom integration had not succeeded and that future convergence efforts would focus on delivering content online and developing a viable economic model for news production. Respondents offered diverse perceptions of conventional media’s ability to reinvent and sustain themselves as the principal news sources for Canadians.

In 2014, French and Belgian Facebook members witnessed the flourishing of numerous Facebook groups dedicated to their town or village that shared the same rallying cry, “You’re a real … if …” This trend spread like wildfire, to the extent that more than 160 towns/villages now have an active page on the social network. Seniors are among the most active members of these groups. In this context, the general objective of our study consisted of identifying the mechanisms through which these pages participate in building a real geo-cultural community in which the oldest Facebook members play a central role. To do so, we performed a content analysis of the 842 posts and 5,314 comments written between December 5, 2014 and January 5, 2015 in the groups representing the cities of Hannut and Jodoigne (Belgium) as well as Fourmies and Harnes (France). Our study concerns the topics of the posts, the types of actions performed by the members and the interactions among them. Our research shows that such groups create intergenerational “affinity spaces,” which debunks common misconceptions about how seniors approach the digital world.

This quantitative content analysis examines source use for an eleven-week period in a “news disaster” story. The frequency of similar stories, which explain to readers, viewers, and listeners how the media do their work, has grown in the past forty years, and media observers are unsure what the change means. In this study, source affiliations and themes are evaluated in a census of stories about errors made by the media in reporting election night returns for the 2000 presidential race. News workers and other media-affiliated sources initially dominated the stories. They commonly explained how the reporting errors occurred or related factual information about the coverage. These sources and themes effectively blocked other affiliated and unaffiliated sources from evaluating the media's performance until later.

ABSTRACT This study reports on the Canadian data from a recent international content analysis of broadcast news in 18 countries. With a mind to Robert A. Hackett’s longitudinal analysis of foreign news on CBC and CTV in 1989, the current study addresses questions of foreign news prominence, geographic distribution, topic coverage, and variation between networks, noting differences and similarities in the content of foreign news in light of shifting cultural, political, and economic environments; news production processes; and communication technologies. This analysis provides an update to Hackett’s seminal work, painting a picture of the Canadian foreign news landscape two decades later.RÉSUMÉ Cette étude porte sur les données canadiennes provenant d’une analyse de contenu de nouvelles télévisées dans dix-huit pays.

On Friday, 30 January 2015, Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, introduced Bill C-51, also known as the Anti-Terrorism Act in Canada’s House of Commons. This article delineates research into the media coverage of Bill C-51 in the month after its introduction, prior to its legislation. A qualitative content analysis of 23 articles from five Canadian news sources ( National Post, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Tyee, and rabble.ca) was conducted. Data were coded and analysed using the qualitative research software NVivo 10. Themes that arose from the data include: terrorism and our need for protection; production and reinforcement of fear; oversight, accountability, and abuses of power; and dystopic future and ‘big’ government. Findings show that the differences between alternative and commercial news sources were not as evident as much of the literature regarding the differences between the types of media would hypothesize.

Over the last decade social networks have become important channels for the media to publish information and communicate with their younger audiences, with Instagram recently becoming the most popular platform for this purpose. This article is an investigation into news production on this social network in the context of the international crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, by means of a content analysis of 552 posts published by the two most widely read Spanish newspapers. The results suggest that despite there being a large quantity of soft content and human-interest stories, as found in previous research, Instagram is also used as a platform to distribute information of public interest about the management of the crisis (such as political decisions and health content). Keywords: social networks, Instagram, journalism, COVID-19, agenda.

This work focuses on structural-systemic factors that have been determining Indonesian commercial news TV Channels' political news production and publication in the Post-Soeharto Regime. A critical political economy perspective of the media and the media behaviours, performance, and content production models were adopted. Articles published in qualified journals, theses and reports released by Indonesian mainstream media related with such issue and in-depth interview derived from five senior editors/journalists of Indonesian commercial news TV channels and interview data collected from Indonesian journalists through online survey were extracted using the qualitative content and thematic analyses. The findings indicate that the following factors systematically determined political news production and publications organized by such private news TV channels. These factors include cartelised political system, party cartelisation, oligarchic media ownership, Pancasila (the Five Principles) as a unitary Indonesian state and government ideology, types and personal characters of the news sources, and religious violence groups.

Abstract: A content analysis of U.S. and Canadian news magazines was conducted to determine the incidence of revenge words and phrases following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the Twin Towers, New York; whether revenge was associated with justifications of evil and/or photographic reinforcements; and whether these contents differed between the two countries. Issues from September 17, 2001, to January 14, 2002, of the major news magazines from the two countries were examined; 698 articles were identified as relating to September 11. The Canadian magazine Maclean’s presented significantly more revenge words and phrases than either of the two other magazines. In contrast, the solely U.S. magazine, Newsweek, presented evil justifications significantly more than the magazines containing Canadian content, Maclean’s and the Canadian edition of Time. The results were presented in the context of exposure to magazines being a source of learning of revenge motives, attitudes, and behaviours.

Aim of study. The aim of this paper is to analyze how the news media influences the construction of the social perception of forests and forestry.

Area of study. The area covered by this study is Spain.

Material and Methods. The materials used for the analysis were the online news related to items such as forest, bioenergy and biodiversity, in two leading newspapers in Spain from 2009 to 2012. The hypotheses tested were divided into two sets, one focused on the messages and another focused on the sources on these messages. Summative content analysis was applied, combining both quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The messages and sources were systematically explored and monitored.

Main results: As main results, forest wildfires news is the most frequent issue mentioned in the media, however they require deeper reflection and debate. Keywords such as forest management, owners, harvesting, products, etc. are rarely found anymore; furthermore, new terms such as biomass, are not yet prevalent. On sources, official institutions, primarily the regional governments, dominate the news sources with a share of over 50%.

Research highlights: Mass media analysis is considered the most appropriate complement for perception studies as it provides relevant basic information needed to design a communication plan. Further research is required on the role mass media plays in how we perceive and react to the environmental problems around us.

Keywords: summative content analysis; policy analysis; ATLAS.ti; biomass; protected areas.
