The article presents the analysis of author's self-presentation means in historiographical texts. The author of a historiographical text studies scientific context of historic events and therefore acts as a historian and historiographer. The current study enabled to discover the major strategies of expressing author's intentions. Those turned out to be objectiveness, appeal to documents, detached subjectivity, explicit evaluation and argumentation strategies. Dialog strategy was in the periphery. It was found that historiographical texts show the dominants common for scientific discourse in general including a pattern of “a research analyst” who uses certain techniques of proving a hypothesis by means of elaborated logical description and reasoning. The analysis of linguistic means of expressing author's intentions enabled to reveal explicit and implicit indications of those strategies. The explicit ones included adjectives sometimes used with intensifiers; nouns; set expressions and phrases with evaluative meaning; an appeal to other scientists opinion with the abundance of quotations and references. The implicit ones contained argumentation strategies including author's comments with unfortunately rare appeal to the analyst's own research results and dialog strategies with interrogative sentences and question-answer patterns indicating them.

The predicates typical of scientific discourse shown, proved, established , etc., which are used to present the results of the study are discussed in the article. The relevance of the study is due to the scientific significance of addressing the problem of discursive research of epistemic indicators of reliability in the context of the principles of the language postclassical logical analysis. The purpose of the study is to justify the “modality” of these constructions and describe the epistemic modal meaning that they bring to the proposition, as specific propositional attitudes. The methodology used in the article is based on some basic principles of modal (in particular, epistemic) logic and linguistic semantics of J. Lyons and E. V. Paducheva. The novelty of the study is in the fact that the pragmatic functions of the considered predicates are described. It is shown that, in addition to a simple statement, their value contains an epistemic modal component, which is based on the value of “provability” described by modal logic. It is established that this modal meaning correlates with the category of objective language modality. Particular attention is paid to logical and linguistic grounds on which these predicates are classified as modal. The question is raised about the functioning of these predicates in contexts complicated by indicators of subjective epistemic modality with a value of problematic certainty. It is concluded that the predicates shown, proved, established, and similar ones indicate the “objective” (verifiable) nature of the information presented and the author’s conviction of the reliability of the described data, and constructions with the indicated predicates also perform a rhetorical function and enhance the “persuasiveness” of the text.

The article considers the category of evaluation in linguistics and the means of its representation. As an anthropocentric category, evaluation is an important element of a person's cognitive activity and is based on their value attitudes. The purpose of the article is to identify and analyze explicit and implicit means of expressing evaluation in the articles on CNN.com dedicated to the issues of migration to the countries of the European Union and North America. In the experiment, content, definition and component analysis were used to study 84 publications for the period of 2019-2021. As a result, 617 examples of evaluation were identified. Among them, 367 examples were of explicit evaluation and 250 examples were of implicit evaluation. It was found that the evaluation in the analyzed material is mainly explicit in nature and it is expressed by lexical units with evaluative semantics. The implicit evaluation is based on the linguistic and extralinguistic context and is represented by various linguistic means: quotation, metaphor, phraseological units, antithesis, euphemisms. As the analysis has shown, the axiological characteristic is created with a complex of explicit and implicit evaluative means to implement the main function of the media to inform the audience and shape public opinion.

In this exploratory study, Tabea Lenhard examines the importance of Christian spirituality for long-term addicts in Germany. Interviews were conducted among people with a complex history of addiction who ascribed great personal relevance to the Christian faith. This empirical study gives a systematical overview on the individual patterns of interpretation and biographical experiences of addicts: How are, in the perspective of addicts, spirituality and addiction connected to each other? What impact do they attribute to faith in their lives? The research results are embedded in the international scientific discourse and practical conclusions for working with addicts are drawn. With a foreword by Katrin Liel.

The article examines linguostylistic specifics of the pragmatical and symbolic realization of the poetic discourse based on English. As the purpose of the work, we analyzed the use of linguistic means of symbolization in the English poetic discourse in the linguopragmatic aspect. The article discusses the importance of stylistic means in English for poetic influence on the addressee. In analyzing verses from pragmalinguistic side is necessary to show their stylistic peculiarities. We did a contextual analysis of poetic works at the text and hypotext levels using the method of symbolic interpretation, stylistic analysis, and linguopragmatic analysis. As the material of the study, we analyzed the poetic works of English poets. The theoretical significance of research results is to identify linguistic specifics of pragmatic and symbol realization of the poetic discourse in the English linguoculture. The study contributes to the development of discursive linguistics, pragmalinguistics, lexicology and stylistics of English, theory of linguistics, linguoculturology. In practical terms, results can be used in teaching the theory of discourse, pragmalinguistics, linguistic analysis of the poetic text, lexicology, and stylistics of English.

This paper offers an overview of the major events and trends in the field of polyglottery as a science (the study of consciously attained individual multilingualism) from 2010 to 2021 with special attention to its implications for language education and its connections with geolinguistics (understood as global or geographically specified sociolinguistics in the tradition of the American Society of Geolinguistics). Mentioned are, among other things, the milestone academic conferences in New York, Tokyo and Moscow, the creation of the first organized polyglot group in East Asia, and the first graduation papers on polyglottery defended for a bachelor’s degree in linguistics. An attempt is made to put these research results and ideas in general scientific context

Self-presentation is one of the basic human communicative behaviours. At school it is connected with the ability to characterize a character, which often results in schematic form and stereotypical content. The routinisation of procedures used by teachers breeds students’ indifference. Contemporary urge for social communication sets new challenges to the ability of characterization, one of which being the ability of effective self-presentation. In this particular context the characteristics loses its status of solely school being and faces the current urge of existence on labour market or in the virtual space. The aim of this performance is to present the results of empirical research carried out in secondary schools (against available research results of chosen “self-presentation genres” found in the Internet, such as blogs or IRC’s) in the form of quantitative-qualitative analysis of students’ abilities of the genre’s realization (complemented with the theoretical works in linguistics and linguistic efficiency development didactics) in a perspective of communicative competence’s development in this particular area.

Scientific style is one of the functional styles, which is now actively and dynamically developing. It aims to reflect the phenomena of linguistic reality and the processes of the society modern development. The mandatory features of the scientific texts syntax can be completed to the abstractivness and generalization, which are manifested as the exception of a personal subject of action (deagency) from the sentence structure and the wide applicability of nominalizing structures (the nominal nature of a statement). One of the ways to implement the deagency and nominal nature of a statement of scientific thought is the use of introductory constructions. Activation of introductory units in modern Ukrainian scientific speech is an innovative phenomenon. They have different extralinguistic nature and perform tasks that implement various communication patterns. The use of introductory constructions in a scientific text is necessary not only for the expressiveness of the message, but also for semantic integrity, which is ensured by combining all parts of the text around one topic. They help to realize such categories of the text as coherence, modality, consistency, and articulation. The specificity of the choice of introductory units depends on author's individual style, his thoughts about a particular problem, and predetermines the choice of linguistic means for conducting scientific discussion or argumentation. The article traces new trends in the communicative and pragmatic organization of modern Ukrainian scientific discourse due to the use of various types of introductory constructions. Their main functions and stylistic manifestations within the most important semantic groups are identified; the ways of structural and grammatical, and functional and stylistic diversity of introductory words, word combinations and sentences are established. Analyzing the actual material regarding the use of introductory words, phrases and sentences in modern Ukrainian scientific discourse, we state that they acquire a wider use and stylistic weight, serve as a means of implementing several communicative and pragmatic functions: text and connectedness, accent and affirmative, accent and hypothetical, and appraisal functions. There is a noticeable tendency towards the predominant use of the Ukrainian proper introductory words, phrases and sentences, which are increasingly confidently squeezing out of use common early introductory units, which testifies to the Ukrainization of scientific speech.

In this paper I discuss the results of research on „Lans” in relation to the "tool box" provided by semiology. Particular attention I pay to constructing meanings of co-participating in the construction of identity and self-presentation. I also diagnose contemporary sign-functions. The article consists of three parts. The first part is an introduction, in which I outline the theoretical basis of research and use analysis of the semiological categories. In the second part I present fragments of research results. In the last part I undertake to explain the results and relate them to broader contexts of meaning, taking into account the multiplicity of optics and ways of interpreting sign-functions.

The article discusses peculiarities of manipulative strategies in English political discourse. Manipulative strategy can be considered as a form of persuasive strategy aimed at influencing hearers and making them accept beliefs or do things advocated by the manipulator. Manipulation can be considered effective when the hearer doesn’t recognize the intentions of the speaker to influence him. Manipulation is realized by means of different strategies. The two most important ones are the strategy of positive self-presentation which aims at maximizing the significance of one’s own status and the strategy of negative other-presentation which aims at creating a negative image of the opponent, discrediting him. An equally important manipulative strategy often used in political discourse is the theatrical strategy which is characterized by a very high level of emotionality and aims at forcing emotional responses on behalf of the hearers. In the article linguistic means of realization of manipulative strategies and tactics are revealed and discussed.

This paper aims to analyze the context in which the Communication is developed as a social practice from a discursive dimension. This work is based on a qualitative perspective of an exploratory nature, so it does not have initial hypotheses. Its objective is to extract the academic community predominant opinion lines on the Communication Research and Evaluation System and its influence in the academic and scientific context. To this end, a Likert-type online survey has been launched on a census of 2,418 researchers in Communication in Spain, reaching 604 responses, representing a response rate of 24.97%. It is assumed that the research community is part of the same academic ecosystem, being all subjects closely interrelated. Therefore, the design of the survey obeys to a model based on three dimensions: knowledge production, institution management and research evaluation. Among the main conclusions stands out the generalized perception that the research and evaluation system has provoked a functionalist dynamic. It conditions the form of research, fully affecting innovation and interruption of scientific discourse. Keywords: Communication meta-research; scientific discourse; evaluation systems; context studies; Likert scale survey.
