This publication presents manuscript of the famous Russian-Lithuanian philosopher Vasily Seseman (1884-1963) accompanied by a preface. The manuscript "Sport and Contemporary Culture" is the text of Seseman's manuscript collection, which is located in Vilnius University (F122-79). Manuscript is a preparatory text for the article "Time, Culture and Body" (first published in 1931 under the pen name "V. Chukhnin", and then in 1935 under his real name). In "Time, Culture and Body" Sesemann develops his ideas concerning the objectifying attitude, which leads to human's alienation towards body and time. Sesemann claims that the time is perceived as a meaningful entirety only when the time is contemplated from the point of view of work. Work is a purpose-attaining activity where subjective creativity is oriented towards an objective result in future. Working in pursuit of one's goals helps to avoid facing the emptiness of time, but at the same time it alienates the present. Work helps the subject to overcome his individual limitations and to become a part of the objective culture. By hiding behind the results of an objective activity people avoid direct contact with the time because it may appear as an interruption of meaningful relations and as a boredom. The tendency to objectify time is accompanied by the process of objectification of body. Previously, a primitive person could trust his body more than tools. In the modern culture body is gradually downgraded because tools, machinery and even separate institutions take over its functions. In this way the centre of culture is moved to the world of objects which is beyond a subject's control and body plays a merely auxiliary part. A person can overcome his alienation towards time and body only by being wakeful - here and now, by self-knowledge and self-control. Sesemann describes the self-control as the practical ability and mood, which he called "presence of mind". In this state of mind person is able to fing oneself, concentrate and mobilise all his strength to his utmost, maintain inner composure, calmness and balance of spirit.

On August 26, 2021, with the support of “Voprosy filosofii” was held a “round table”, the participants of which considered it meaningful and relevant to address the legacy of experiencing and philosophical reflection of critical epochs by people who have fully endured the “breakdown” of being and an anthropological crisis – for comprehending the disturbing changes taking place in modern society. In this regard, the intellectual biographies of thinkers who felt a colossal shock in the 1920s and who tried to comprehend their local experience as a global are exceptional. In the authors’ focus are ideas and arguments of the philosophers of the Russian Abroad about the crisis of their contemporary culture (Fedotov – Weidle – Landau – Bicilli). The “round table” is an attempt to correlate their experience with the modern reality of the anthropological crisis. The studying intellectuals underlined the death of culture as the main threat to the life of the social organism. The salvation of culture, first of all, depends on the spiritual efforts of people. From this point of view, philosophy has to comprehend the principles that make it possible to resist the processes of cultural destruction. And in this regard, the personality of the philosopher is of exceptional importance, his willingness to live and work “as if history would never end, and at the same time, as if it ended today” (G.P. Fedotov). The philosophy of culture forms the ideal of personal choice as a free submission to universal human goals. The relevance of the intellectual and spiritual search of the “Russian Abroad” thinkers can't be overestimated since this crisis continues today, entering ever new, previously unpredictable phases. The struggle for culture continues. Therefore, the intellectual searches of the "Russian Abroad" thinkers are essential today. The core of the discussions was three actual topics in the context of their comprehension by the philosophers: 1. The crisis of religious consciousness; 2. The crisis of scientific rationality; 3. Crisis of cultural identity.

Nowadays the influence comprehension of the mass media as one of the most significant factors affecting contemporary culture, acquires the special significance. All kinds of new information receiving by media channels obtain the stereotyped, frequently repeatedly cultural and axiological orientations, which become fixed in people's consciousness. Skillful manipulation of information makes the power of suggestion from mass media practically unlimited. Therefore, the public opinion is created by the mass media. Being so closely intertwined with the mass media, the modern mass culture is coming through all elements of people's lives. Moreover, it appears in the literary works, which reflect the influence of the mass media on the consciousness, mentality, point of view and decisions of the literature characters, using their set example in the literature. Odessian playwright Aleksander Mardan presents his characters in the context of the events, which entails new circumstances both due to the characters decisions and out of more extensive economic and political changes. One may notice the presence of mass media in the form of music, information broadcasts and press almost in all Mardan's play. One may track out the influence on the character’s consciousness and reveal the difference between the official version and what happened in the real life. Using the performance tool, there is the action in the play showing the influence of the stereotypes implicated by the mass media. The performance reveals not only the stereotypes affection influencing the mentality of the characters, but also the viewers whose interpretation of the play’s direction is not always critical enough. Therefore, the question about the relationship between the society and mass media, about the level of freedom in mass media from the society and concerning the influence exerted by mass media on the modern culture and the human's consciousness is repeatedly presented in Alexander Mardаn’s plays.

The article deals with gnosis and features of metacognition. Initially, the Gnostics considered whether the term "gnosis" was used, what knowledge did they gain from certain experiences. The subject matter of the study reveals important features of the human psyche. For example, the property of separating one’s self from the external environment is like seeing oneself from the side. This property empowers a person in communicating with other people. This expanded opportunity purifies the human being, because it leads to self-control. During vegetable growing, conditions of a special nature can be experienced by themselves. The Gnostics also spoke about it.The article states that the philosophy of gnosis operates through belief in the special inner world of man, the higher world. But this higher can only be felt when a person is in a state of enstasis as a compensatory trance. The article compares the gnosis of the ancient world with modern philosophical trends. Here, in the descriptions of the inner world of man, the divine transcendence is demonstrated. In this regard, the Gnostics sought knowledge of the true state of mind. This search is engaged in metacognition. The author of the article considers it necessary to clarify what metacognition is. A person has the ability to understand what he or she is thinking. Scientists call it metacognition. Metacognition is when a person feels the world not through the prism of his thoughts, but directly. We can also see this in Gnostics with deep compensatory enstasis, or compensatory trance. Then the person stands apart, because it breaks all the wrong connections. Gnosis tries to capture the knowledge of all these processes. Metacognition helps to establish certain characteristics of compensatory trance, to establish characteristics of compensatory illumination. Compensatory illumination may occur in a state of a particular type of trance. Therefore, the article tries to look at the relationship of compensatory trance and compensatory illumination.

The article deals with the “identity” concept from the point of view based on cultural science and philosophy of culture, i.e. in a broader meaning of this notion as “sociocultural identity”. The latter is viewed not as a readymade “givenness” (national, ethnic, regional, local etc.) but as a dynamically forming social relations structure. It suggests inclusion into the researcher’s attention field the theory of structuration by Anthony Giddens as well as various forms of constructivism. Along with different approaches authors of mentioned theories have a point in common: the identity concept plays a specific role in political field connecting group integration models with individuals and groups behavior. Therefore “self-identity experience” (according to an initial identity definition in psychology) evolves into a culturological reflection on experience of this kind and formation of “new mythologies” determining “desirable future” (up to I. Young’s idea about delusiveness of any group identity and, as a consequence, a necessity to get rid of identity discourse). That starts in its turn a mechanism of “new mythologies” feedback effect on new identities formation. Among most common ideas of this kind “network identity” reflecting modern communication practices can be mentioned. “High tech society”, e.g. “transparent society” (D. Brin) is viewed by corresponding concepts authors as an ideal pattern, which could help to conform modern values contradictions by placing them into culture space where differences are recognized, where they have their place. Though analysis of each of the pointed out patterns demonstrates that “demand for differences” repressive potential is not less than fixation on one’s own culture and values exceptionalism. Hence the necessity to overcome an uncritical acceptance of new “identity mythologies” and consistent effort for their balanced estimate.

Living Ethics, a philosophical and ethical doctrine, is one of the texts on which the mentality of modern culture is based. An attempt is made to analyze text features as a text from the point of view of philosophy of culture, mainly in its semiotic tradition, and from the point of view of linguo-cultural studies. Both approaches involve considering the text in the context of culture, which in turn is understood as an intertext.

Using microurbanism as a combination of approaches to the study of the city’s cultural environment at the micro level, the author examines the totality of the relations of this phenomenon of modern culture, as the popularity of flea markets, such universals of human existence, work, play, sharing, childhood. It is shown that the proliferation of flea markets in the culture of developed countries can be considered as part of the processes of aestheticization and the gamification of life, on the one hand, and puerilely culture – on the other. The article presents the description of Volgograd flea market, its social structure, and place in the urban space, the nature of communication and its inherent “atmosphere”. In the framework of the project for the study of the anthropology of things in regional culture, the author describes characteristics of relations to things at a flea market. From this point of view, the paper introduces a typology of buyers and sellers. In the article, they ask the question on necessity of the exploring of the relationship of human economic behavior with other internal properties, and social-cultural qualities consideration from the point of view of culture philosophy. The specificity of the Volgograd flea market as a form of confrontation between the global and private, social and intimate is that the city is still not ready to allocate and equip a special place for this new form of leisure and social interaction. The main thing that makes the flea market the person is able to set free a child beginning and at the same time to protest against fashion on disposable items, disposable linear relationship and the certainty of a status-situational communication. This movement of will and thoughts received the terminological designation culture “puerility”. The article is criticism of the approach that represents the phenomenon of the flea market as a “city scene”, and argues that the approach can be seen as a consequence of the process of “showisation” of contemporary culture, understood as civilizational tendency, broadcasted by media, to see the performance first of all in every phenomenon of life. Moreover, the flea market includes the performance elements of everyday life and aestheticization of life, it is not still limited to the performance of the “urban scene”.
