Objectives. We identify and investigate circumstances that limit an application of the Five Focusing Steps of the Theory of Constraints in the strategic analysis of investment projects effectiveness.Methods. The methods of factor analysis and financial mathematics including methods for evaluation real options are used.Results. It is shown that in some cases, an increase in business value can be created only by a combination of a number of investment projects, leading to consistent removal of constraints and arising of useful synergistic effects. It is also shown that a value of a project can be determined by changes in the strategy that the company will have the opportunity to make if project is implemented. In such cases, their evaluation without taking into account subsequent decisions may distort their true value.Conclusions and Relevance. We concluded that the main object of evaluation in strategic analysis should be a strategy as a series of future transformations, taking into account the real options generated by them. Therefore, the evaluation of single projects on the base of the Theory of Constraints can lead the rejection of valuable projects due to distortion of their true value. At the same time an application of the Five Focusing Steps in strategic analysis protect against investment in projects with negative net present value.

<p>With the liberalization of energy prices and the opening of the energy sector to competitors in Mexico, an opportunity for new investment projects is now open. Due to the current conditions of international energy markets, such as volatility and low prices with no prospect of reversion, a need for valuation tools to better capture the risk and benefits of a project presents itself. We propose a methodology based on the volatility treatment of numerous underlying assets in a Real Options Analysis: using a TGARCH for the individual volatilities and copulas for the joint effect. The methodology is applied to a natural gas distribution project of Mexico’s State oil company Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX). An estimated net present value of the gas pipeline is provided, considering the real options perspective. The result of our empirical application validates the real option’s theory of a higher net present value estimation for the project when incorporating the effect of different sources of uncertainty and non-linear interdependence.</p>

The method of real options is one of the new approaches to estimate investment projects’ cost and it is an important addition to discounted cash flow method. Real option significantly increases the efficiency of the project due to the possibility of decision-making during its implementation. This aspect is especially important in unstable environmental conditions. The main differences between the financial and real options are presented. The differences of valuation of investment projects by the real options method and net present value are examined. The article presents the types of real options, as well as the methods of calculating the option price.

Aquaculture is an increasingly relevant sector in the exploitation of natural resources; therefore, it is appropriate to propose various models that include the fundamental variables for its economic-financial valuation from a business point of view. The objective of this paper is to analyze different models for the valuation of investment projects in a company in the aquaculture sector in order to conclude whether there is a model that represents a better valuation. Therefore, in this study, four valuation models have been applied, three classical models (net present value, internal rate of return, and payback) and a more recent model, real options (RO) for a company producing and marketing seaweed in Galicia (region located in the northwest of Spain). The results obtained, RO (€5,527,144.04) and net present value (€5,479,659.19), conclude that the RO model estimates a higher added value by taking into account in its calculations the flexibility given by the expansion option. Future lines of research include the application of valuation models that have been applied to companies belonging to the same sector in order to compare whether the results found are similar.

Capital budgeting is crucial for firms that have projects to evaluate especially when the projects are mutually exclusive or financing is scarce. The aim of the study is to determining the most widely used methodologies in capital budgeting decisions and their effectiveness. A qualitative research will provide cement sector specific examples in assessing industry projects and compares the methods of Net Present Value, İnternal rate of Return, Pay-back period, discounted pay-back period and MIRR. Each method is briefly discussed and its drawbacks and advantages are mentioned in detail. Other sectors are also examined in terms of capital budgeting. Our preliminary results indicate that net present value method dominates capital budgeting decisions in the sectors under study.


International innovation and investment activity occupy a special place in the system of modern international business. The authors propose an economic and mathematical model for assessing the sensitivity of international innovation and investment projects by the criterion of net present value. It is advised to use the obtained sensitivity indicator as an additional one in assessing the economic efficiency of international innovation and investment projects of an enterprise. The proposed model makes it possible to determine the effect of several internal parameters simultaneously on the net present value of the project.

PurposeThis study aims to evaluate a hydroponic farm (through nutrient film technique) while considering uncertainty, sustainability and the system's utility in the dominant desert geography. The idea of the hydroponic farm is to allow individuals/businesses to grow plants. Given the geographical condition, the hydroponic system may be useful in the Gulf context and may lead to food security and sustainability. Additionally, the UAE government has initiated several support schemes that can be availed for investing in such businesses that can contribute to the nation's food security.Design/methodology/approachThe hydroponic farm is evaluated using the net present value and real options approach. The authors studied five scenarios: 1. business as usual, 2. 50% subsidy on initial investment through Khalifa funding, 3. 4% premium, 4. Subsidy plus premium and 5. solar panel installation with bore well.FindingsAs per the assumptions and data usage, all the scenarios shows a positive net present value (NPV); Nevertheless, scenarios 4 and 5 report the significant highest net present and delay value.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has environmental, economic and social implications. Lower imports indirectly lead to lower carbon footprints. The local production of food ensures higher employability in the sector and increase in local consumption. Additionally, fresh food consumption is directly associated to good health.Practical implicationsSupportive policies such as subsidies through Khalifa funding may accelerate the expansion of such projects through domestic and foreign investments. One of the important takeaway from the study is to invest in the training of the workforce.Social implicationsGiven the geographical condition, the UAE usually depends on food imports. If the hydroponic farms become popular, the residents will have access to fresh vegetables and fruits. Higher engagement in agriculture activities also ensures a significant increase in agriculture-related businesses and higher employability.Originality/valueThe study adds novelty to the literature because the effect of Khalifa funding and investment analysis on solar (wells) has not been evaluated in any hydroponic studies. We presented the results with tornado graphs using NPV risk and real options approach in the Gulf context. The study represents functional scenarios that were previously not found in the literature.

Real Options methods are currently used to assess investment projects considering: (1) the decision options that one can have along the development of the project, such as to expand it, or reduce it, or to abandon it, or to differ it, and (2) the uncertainty in some financial variables for the assessment of the economic investment. In these two regards, Real Options methods are superior to the traditional Net Present Value method. The purpose of the present paper is to establish the basis for Real Options modeling for decision making on design, inspection, maintenance, and decommissioning of offshore structures. The use of Real Options theory is sought in order to account for: (1) uncertainties in the financial variables involved in risk assessment based on expected costs, such as the economic consequences due to failure of a system; and (2) uncertainties associated with the resistance and loading of the structure for reliability assessment. An application of Real Options Theory is given in the paper for decision making on maintenance for an offshore structure. Cash flow from oil revenue is modeled as a stochastic process. Preventive and corrective maintenance is analyzed as a critical situation where the decision maker has the option to pay the costs of maintenance in order to obtain a benefit. Expressions are derived for the estimation of the value of the maintenance option; they are based on the derivation of the Black-Scholes equation for the evaluation of financial options. It is shown that the value of such project is equal to the sum of the net cash flow of the project (as with a Net Present Value evaluation) plus the value of the maintenance option. Projects with one and two decision times along the life of the structure are formulated and analyzed. Closed form solutions are obtained for such cases. An example is given in order to illustrate the differences between maintenance decisions using the Net Present Value and the Real Options method.

ABSTRACT Broiler poultry is highly dependent on artificial lightening. Power consumption costs of artificial lighting systems is the second largest expense related to broiler industry, second only to feed expenses. Therefore, the current study focused to analyze technical and economic feasibility of replacing incandescent lamps already used in aviaries with other lamp types. Costs related to power consumption, implementation and maintenance of the lighting systems were evaluated with the aid of financial mathematics using net present value, return over investment and payback. Systems composed of six lamp types were analyzed in two different configurations to meet the minimum illuminance of 5 and 20 lux and for use in conventional sheds and dark house. The lamps tested were incandescent (LI) of 100 W, compact fluorescent (CFL) of 34 W, mixed (ML) 160 W sodium vapor (SVL) of 70 W, tubular fluorescent T8 (TFL T8) of 40 W and tubular fluorescent T5 (TFL T5) of 28 W. For the systems tested, it was found that the tubular fluorescent lamps T8 and T5 showed the best results of technical and economic feasibility.
