Lifestyle and energy use: as analysed with concepts from Bourdieu This article focuses on the concept of lifestyle. This is a concept that is widely used in environment studies, but is often used as an empirical rather than theoretical con-cept. The article raises the question as to whether a sociological concept of lifestyle can provide newer insights about the relationship between lifestyle and energy use. The article develops a sociological concept of lifestyle based on the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu. In this framework lifestyle is closely related to the concepts of habitus, field and social space. The article shows how this framework is fruitful as it provides insights into the social processed and dynamics behind energy use. Energy use is here under-stood as salient, related to symbolic competition between different classes and fractions of classes and fundamental power relations. Furthermore the analyses focuses on the reproduction of habits and social struc-tures rather than rapidly changing social patterns, a perspective that often dominates lifestyle analyses.

This chapter discusses how consumer culture affects the depiction and meaning of the natural world in the work of American realist writers. These writers illuminate the relationship between natural environments and the social expectations of consumer culture and reveal how such expectations transform natural space into what Henri Lefebvre terms “social space” implicated in the processes and power dynamics of production and consumption. The representation of nature as social space in realist works demonstrates the range of consequences such space holds for characters. Such space can both empower and oppress individuals, and rejecting or embracing it can deepen moral resolve, prompt a crisis of self, or result in one’s death. Characters’ attempts to escape social space and consumer culture also provide readers with new strategies for coping with their effects.

ABSTRACTThe present work has as object of study the Penitentiary Security ex-Agent (ex-ASP) who is in prison regime by the crime of passive corruption (Article 317 - Brazilian Penal Code). The study answered the following questions: 1) What do staffs and ex-staffs think on the practice of corruption exercised between institutional staffs and some prisoners inside the Sao Paulo's Prisons? 2) What are the representations for the conduct of the ASP's? 3) How do these representations explain the inclusion of some staffs in illegal activity by way of corruption? What is the relationship between corruption and violence? This is a qualitative research with questionnaires and interviews script sticking to the viewpoint of those involved in acts of corruption (the ex-ASP's) and the speeches of the staffs in the exercises of function. The social representations was used as theoretical and methodological axes to present the explanatory elements (material and symbolic) that guide the conduct of this professional category about the corruption and the relationship of this practice with the intramural violence.

Social insects live in colonies consisting of many workers, where worker interactions play an important role in regulating colony activities. Workers interact within the social space of the nest; therefore, constraints on nest space may alter worker behaviour and affect colony activities and energetics. Here we show in the ant Temnothorax rugatulus that changes in nest space have a significant effect on colony energetics. Colonies with restricted nest space showed a 14.2 per cent increase in metabolic rate when compared with the same colonies in large uncrowded nests. Our study highlights the importance of social space and shows that constraints on social space can significantly affect colony behaviour and energy use in ants. We discuss the implications of our findings regarding social insects in general.

The article discuses the dimension of reflexivity within the work of the social theorist Pierre Bourdieu. It alludes to the provenance of Bourdieu’s theory of practice and the epistemology, which underpins it. Language is a key element in reflexivity, the article therefore outline’s Bourdieu approach to language and the significance it holds in the development of his key concepts, as well as the relationship between subject and object. Reference is made to the works of Habermas, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and others to offer a ground base in just what Bourdieusian reflexivity is and how it operates in practice. Phases and stages in methodology are referred to as well as how reflexivity should operate within them. Finally, the significance of the discussion is underlined with reference to consequent outcomes.

This article mobilizes Pierre Bourdieu’s full theory-method to study how class shapes our news orientations in a digital, high-choice media environment. An online survey ( N = 3850) was used to create a statistical representation of the contemporary Swedish social space with variables measuring access to economic, cultural, social, and cosmopolitan capital. A range of digital news preferences and practices were then given co-ordinates in that space. Results highlight the importance of class habitus for the formation of digital news repertoires. Since different groups form altogether different news repertoires—and distaste the preferences of the groups most different to themselves (in terms of access to capitals)—news practices and preferences solidify the positions of groups in the social structure. The study sheds light on the relationship between social and digital inequality and challenges the psychological and individualistic bias in contemporary research on news media use.

This paper explores notions and rationales of gift exchange among participants of the social networking site ‘LiveJournal.’ While gift exchanges can be framed as a form of power relations, this paper argues that they also have the potential to function as a way of forming and maintaining social bonds, and of maintaining individual and collective identity within the virtual social space.

Capital and Garin Nugroho’s Strategy on the Process of Film Production. This study analyzes the social structure of Garin Nugroho as a filmmaker that has been conducted based on the socio-cultural paradigm of Pierre Bourdieu with the genetic structuralism approach. The genetic structuralism theory rests on four main concepts, namely habitus, arena, capital, and strategy. This study is expected to be able to see the social reality of a filmmaker when a film is produced. Data were obtained from the documentation of mass media, film catalogues, informant interviews, and literature. The results of this research show that there is a dialectic of internalization in Garin Nugroho’s habitus which leads him to dare to close the old wounds then opens the new ones in the transition period of global culture. Therefore, the relationship between art and technology has been a chosen field by Garin Nugroho in struggling for the creativity. From the field of the struggle, Garin Nugroho has some kind of capitals that are exchanged in the social stucture. The strategy that is applied by Garin Nugroho in facing the digital era is consitent in using the power of technology as a tool to realize any creativity throgh the media of film.

The notion of privacy represents a central criterion for both indoor and outdoor social spaces in most traditional Arab settlements. This paper investigates privacy and everyday life as determinants of the physical properties and patterns of the built and urban fabric and will study their impact on traditional settlements and architecture of the home in the contemporary Iraqi city. It illustrates the relationship between socio-cultural aspects of public and private realms using the notion of the social sphere as an investigative tool of the concept of social space in Iraqi houses and local communities (Mahalla). This paper reports that in spite of the impact of other factors in articulating built forms, privacy embodies the primary role under the effects of Islamic rules, principles and culture. The crucial problem is the underestimation of traditional inherited values through opening social spaces to the outside that giving unlimited accesses to the indoor social environment creating many problems with regard to privacy and communal social integration.

Across societies, deaths which take place in early infancy often trigger distinctive responses in burial practices, signifying the ambivalent social status of those who died before they really lived. This paper focuses on burial practices in medieval Central Europe pertaining to children who died before, during or shortly after birth. It discusses the relationship between medieval laity, ecclesiastic power and social space, using three medieval cemeteries in Switzerland and Austria as examples. By integrating considerations of medieval practices of infant baptism, afterlife topography and social theories of space, a methodological and interpretative framework is outlined and employed for approaching burials of early-deceased infants, the social dimension of related local burial practices, and processes of power negotiation between medieval laypeople and church authorities.
