The book here reviewed is particularly important in the field of comparative studies dedicated to Dostoevsky and Malraux, since it is the first attempt to generalize and systematize the connections that unite the creative heritage of the two writers. The interest of Howlett’s book lies in the fact that the author considers Malraux from three different points of view: as a reader, literary theorist, and writer; thus, he creates an original biography of the French writer through the prism of the impact of Dostoevsky’s ideas on him and at the same time a study that allows us to understand Dostoevsky’s role in the development of French literature in the 19th and 20th centuries. Trying to define the role of Dostoevsky in Malraux’s creative development, Howlett speaks of a demonic influence of the Russian writer: Dostoevsky predetermined Malraux’s place as a novelist and literary critic and predicted his fate, being at the same time a “guardian demon” and a tempter, constantly encouraging him to ask the cursed questions of existence. Extracting from Malraux’s texts statements about the Russian author and combining them with his own reflections and observations, Howlett seems to continue and realize Malraux’s unfinished plan to write a book about Dostoevsky.

The article examines from various points of view the  role of the  Spanish language  in   the    Russian    system   of    primary    and  secondary education,  both  public    and   private,  paying   special   attention to the  experience of  schools participating in the  Bilingual  Sections program of the  Spanish Ministry of Education and Training. The article compares Spanish with other foreign languages in the  Russian  school system, and considers its evolution in the  timeline  and the  impact on its status of migration movements in connection with political events, commercial and student exchange,  tourism;  as well as the  impact of certain measures taken both in Russia  and in Spain. Institutions in both countries have established links to promote mutual development in terms of learning Spanish and Russian,  and the  diplomatic corps has become the   catalyst and manager of  this  dynamic.  Despite the   fact  that the   reactions  of  educational  actors  (institutions, civil society, students  and  teachers) are  varied, they  reinforce different mechanisms to gain access  to Spanish culture and business, as well as to other Spanish-speaking countries. The article also demonstrates the  current statistics and describes the  trend that the  teaching of Spanish may  follow in the  coming years due to positioning of Spanish among the  main foreign languages studied in Russian  schools.

Abstract The role of work and the characteristics of the workplace have changed greatly in recent decades. Today, new technologies enable an almost seamless interaction between machines and humans and allow teams in different countries and time zones to collaborate effectively. In this paper, we focus on the question of how job motivation is affected by technologies in the changing workplace. First, we review the state of research on job motivation and examine challenges in light of current technology trends and predicted developments for the workplace of the future. Job motivation is a well-documented construct connected to several company-relevant performance outcomes. However, our comprehensive literature review reveals a fragmented picture, with several disciplines addressing the topic from various points of view. We identify the four following schools of thought on workplace technologies and motivation: Technology as 1. background music, 2. hygiene factor, 3. motivator, and 4. influencer of mediators. While some scholars neglect technology in their considerations, others describe complex frameworks. This lack of unity reveals a further need for research. We suggest further research to develop holistic frameworks including moderators and to collect empirical data on the complex interactions between technology and job motivation.

The paper presents a review of the main issues and methods of studying modern French literature and comparative studies. The authors outline the diferences between European approaches, now taken with focus rather on all-European common principles than cultural distinctions, and American tendencies that reflect the priority of feminist and post-colonial methods of comparative studies. Attention is paid to the French peculiarities concerning the replacement of the term ‘influence’ by ‘intertextuality’, and to the role of intermedial and interdisciplinary comparative studies. Among the outlined concepts and issues are research ethics in comparative studies; non-essential writers and genres (F. Lavokat); relation of comparative studies to the concepts of European and world literature (A. Tomiche); the role and place of comparative studies in literature and culture (F. Toudoire-Surlapierre), accuracy and universality of defining the discipline (B. Franco), the study of links between literature and art (G. Steiner). Attention is also paid to the discussions on the concept of ‘world literature’ (in particular to the views of P. Kazanova) that concern the term ‘world literature’ as it is interpreted by American researchers and ‘European literature’ used by French ones. Other issues are the concept of ‘cultural transfer’; the content of hermeneutic practice in comparison; the role of analysis and ‘defamiliarization’ (introduced by V. Shklovsky); comparison as an object of criticism, a tool of analytics, and methodological necessity; the transversality as the coexistence of diferent comparative methods. The comparative approach has been shown as ontological and culturological vision, a special method of research with a basis in comparison and opposition of the interconnected systems covering translation studies, mythology, imagology, geocriticism, post-colonial and gender studies, research of cultural transfer specified as multicomparativism.

The influence of French culture on the poetry of M. Tsvetaeva was noted by her contemporaries (B. Pasternak, S. Bobrov), and also became the subject of scientific research (for example, N. Strelnikova). However, the relationship of her poetry with the French writer work of the romanticism era, M. Desbordes-Valmore (1786-1859), which is almost forgotten in our days, is analyzed for the first time, which seems relevant in light of the growing interest in the role of women in European culture. The article uses a biographical method, with the involvement of the poetics of the rhythm of H. Meshonnik. The article examines the mentions of M. Desbordes-Valmore in M. Tsvetaeva’s poetry and in correspondence with B. Pasternak, provides a brief comparison of biographies in terms of their influence on the formation of a poetic voice. Their tragic fates have a lot in common: both survived revolutions, as a consequence the ruin of the family nest, extreme poverty, the loss of loved ones. The main similarity between M. Tsvetaeva and M. Desbordes-Valmore lies in the auditory imagination, in intonational rhythmic expressiveness and in vivid metaphor. Both M. Desbordes-Valmore and M. Tsvetaeva left evidence of a moment preceding the moment of writing, “music” preceding verbal expression. They often rely on the song as a precedent text (O. Revzina), a precedent rhythm. The autobiographical nature of the lyrics and the musicality bring together so dissimilar authors at first glance. M. Tsvetaeva read M. Desbordes-Valmore in the original, probably having become acquainted with her work at the summer courses in the history of French literature at the Sorbonne. The analysis of the transformations of M. Desbordes-Valmore’s poems motifs in M. Tsvetaeva’s lyrics clearly show not only a deep knowledge and understanding of the French romantic tradition, but also the innovation of her own poetic language.

This paper attempts to unravel efforts made a majlis taklim to transform into an amil zakat institutions. The role of zakat institutions will be more pronounced benefits than just being a majlis taklim. It is to embody the image of Indonesian Islam as a representation of Islam, especially in relation to Social-economic welfare, should be formed either amil zakat institutions. Which of course is not merely the responsibility of the large organizations, but also social institutions that are rooted down to the lowest level so that the impact is even really be felt by the community. One of them is the Majlis Taklim az-Zahra who had attempted to pioneer its existence not merely as a study group that only focuses on spirituality problems alone, but also perform a variety of social activities. Especially after held assistance through various activities both workshops, studies, comparative studies and so forth. Proven has started there is a small movement that is gathering a bit of money every week when there recitation

Purpose – Marketing researchers continue to debate the significance of the managerial relevance of marketing, especially in the boardrooms. Despite a growing number of published papers on the topic, it is surprising that there are virtually none on mental models. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents mental models as a perspective to discuss marketing's position in companies, and reflects on the marketing mental models of boardroom members and top management. Findings – The paper addresses marketing's relevant issues and offers new insights into the role of marketing in companies by highlighting mental models, which drive the boardrooms’ and managers’ attentions, decisions, actions, and evaluations. The paper demonstrates the importance of mental models by introducing and discussing the notion of the mental footprint of marketing, or the impact marketing has on mental models. Research limitations/implications – The rapidly changing business environment, in addition to current marketing research trends, strengthens the need to understand the scope of issues included under the notion of marketing, as well as the overall significance of marketing within the company. The paper advocates that understanding and investigating mental models is useful in these endeavors. Practical implications – The paper presents a set of different implications from recognized mental models in companies. Originality/value – This paper contributes to discussions on the relevance of marketing in modern companies by introducing a new perspective, involving the mental footprint of marketing, which challenges functional points of view. If the mental model of marketing takes a broader approach, considering marketing to be ubiquitous, then marketing can be seen as being present in the boardroom.

Two studies examined the impact of macrolevel symbolic threat on intergroup attitudes. In Study 1 (N = 71), participants exposed to a macrosymbolic threat (vs. nonsymbolic threat and neutral topic) reported less support toward social policies concerning gay men, an outgroup whose stereotypes implies a threat to values, but not toward welfare recipients, a social group whose stereotypes do not imply a threat to values. Study 2 (N = 78) showed that, whereas macrolevel symbolic threat led to less favorable attitudes toward gay men, macroeconomic threat led to less favorable attitudes toward Asians, an outgroup whose stereotypes imply an economic threat. These findings are discussed in terms of their implications for understanding the role of a general climate of threat in shaping intergroup attitudes.
