This research was intended to investigate the effect of a culture-based approach in improving students’ reading comprehension on spoof text. For that purpose, a true experimental study was applied to the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Soreang. The sample of this study was 88 students from that school. These students were divided equally into the control and experimental group. The experimental group was given the Culture-Based Approach (CBA) as the treatment in comprehending the text.  The students’ scores of pre-test and post-test from both groups were statistically analyzed and compared by the T-test. The findings could be summarized that generally, students from the experimental group gained better achievement than from the control group on their post-test scores. The data analysis also showed that there was a significant difference between the mean score of the pre-test (53.45) and the post-test (58.39.). Furthermore, the result of the t-test (5.707) was relatively higher than the t- table (2.018) for a 0.5 percent level of significance. It indicated that the students’ achievement was significantly improved after the treatment of using a Culture-Based Approach. Thus, it is recommended that a Culture-Based Approach should be considered as an alternative choice for English teachers in teaching spoof text.

Doing reading comprehension needs active process in doing. The suitable teaching-learning process must achieve the objective of reading comprehension. In fact, reading skill is not easy. Lecturer should use good strategy in teaching about reading comprehension. It also happens for students that they find some hard in doing reading comprehension well. They can’t get good value for understanding the text meaning. So, the strategy is very useful to solve the difficulties in reading comprehension. This study is concerned with the reading effect about descriptive text through Metacognition strategy application. This study learns about students reading skills in descriptive text. This research is conducted based on experimental quantitative design which has two randomized subject. The population were Health Information Management students at Deli Husada Deli Tua Health Institute grade I, II and III. The random sample was taken from grade I and III as group of experimental and grade II as the control group. In every group was given pre-test and post-test in same test but the experimental group accepted the treatment of Metacognition strategy in the study. The result of this research showed that there was difference between the mean of the group of experimental and the group of control. The statistic calculation showed that t-observed (4.1) is higher than t-table (1.67) for the degree of freedom (df) 58 at the level α = 0.05 level of significance. It proves that Metacognition strategy has significantly effect on students’ reading comprehension in reading descriptive text.

This study deals with the effect of Contextual Guessing Technique (CGT) on students’ reading comprehension achievement in descriptive text. The problem of the study is to find out whether Contextual guessing Technique significantly affects students’ achievement in reading descriptive text or not. This study was conducted by using experimental design. The population of the study was the students of eighth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Perbaungan in academic years 2014/2015, there were 5 parallel classes of grade VIII. There were two classes selected to be sample. The experimental group (VIII-2) was taught by using CGT, while the control group was taught by applying conventional technique. The data of the study was obtained from the students’ scores of reading test. There were two kinds of test used in this study. They were pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by applying t-test formula. After analyzing the data, the result of the study showed that t-observed (2,322) was higher than t-table (2,024) (t-observed > t-table) at the level of significance of p=0,05 and the degree of freedom (df) = 38. Thus, it can be concluded that applying CGT significantly affects students’ achievement in reading descriptive text, or in other words, the null hypothesis is rejected; therefore, the alternative hypothesis is accepted.

This study intended to determine the effect of Group Integration Method on academic performance in Integral Calculus at the College of Engineering University of Eastern Philippines. It employed a quasi-experimental design that involved two sections of second year BSEE students enrolled in Integral Calculus in the College of Engineering. The students in these sections were comparable since their pre-test on a 1-1 scoring system were not significantly different using the t-test of independent sample at 0.05 level of significance in Integral Calculus ability of the students between the control and experimental group. The average pre-test scores per class were determined to set the experimental and control group. The former bears the lower average scores, which needs more attention through cooperative learning among group members while the latter bears the higher ones since the students can handle individual learning. The individual pre-test scores were used in the categorization of the students in both control and experimental groups. The scores were ranked and categorized into three (3): the High Performer (HP), the Average Performer (AP) and the low Performer (LP). The result showed that most of the respondents for both groups are males, first timers and average students with respect to differential calculus academic performance. As to the age bracket, the data shows majority of the students were (18-20) years old.      The outcomes of the study further showed that the respondents exposed to the Integration Method and Traditional Method had the overall interpretation of failed rating at the start of the study. As the study progressed 8 respondents from the Group Integration and 12 respondents were added in Traditional method above failing stage considering the post-test administered to both groups. The T-test at 0.05 level of significance stressed out that post-test and combined tests for pre-test/post-test significantly differs for both Group Integration and Traditional methods of instruction. Finally, as to the academic performance, Group Integration is better than Traditional Methods of Instruction. This implies that the intervention aided the students to boost their skills in Integral calculus under the experimental group.
