Arabic language education is a compulsory subject in Madrasah (Primary education level) under the auspices of the Ministry of Religious affairs. The students’ interest in Arabic language learning in Madrasah Aliyah Nurul Haq Rite Indonesia was very low. This is due to the students’ dislike of Arabic that demands the students to think, memorize, and be proficient in speaking as well as other skills. The current learning activities are non-varied and teacher-centered learning models. This study aims to determine the role of teachers in increasing students’ interest in Arabic learning. This study used a qualitative approach with field studies. Data collection techniques were interview, observation, and documentation. The data analysis techniques were in the form of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study on the roles of teachers indicate that; (1) the teacher provides motivation and guidance for every Monday ceremony and Imtaq activities on Friday, (2) the teacher only uses textbooks without semester learning plans and other learning tools, (3) the teacher uses non-varied methods ( such as the lecture and discussion method), (4) the teacher provides an assessment of learning outcomes, (5) the teacher provides evaluation or tests, (6) the teacher gives praise to students, and (7) the teacher punishes students who do not do assignments. The results of this study contribute as practical insights for teachers, especially Arabic teachers in maximizing their roles to increase interest in learning Arabic in schools.

It covers the description of linguistic consciousness and some aspects of its influence on the process of development of students’ communicative competence. Abstract This theoretical review paper investigates the role of first language (L1) in the mainstream scholarship of second/foreign (L2/FL) language education in the context of language learning, teaching, and bilingual education. The term ‘mainstream’ refers here to the scholarship that is not informed by sociocultural theory in general and Vygotskian sociocultural theory in particular. The paper later explains a Vygotskian perspective on the use of L1 in L2/FL language education and discusses how the perspective may help content teachers in (a) employing L1 in teaching L2/FL content and (b) helping L2/FL students to become self-regulative users of the target language.

This paper seeks to assess the potential for Social Networking Sites (SNSs) to play a role in language learning in the UK Higher Education (HE) sector. These sites are characterised by certain features including learning materials, synchronous and asynchronous video and text chat facilities, a peer review feature, and some sites also incorporate an award system, in the form of points (http://www.livemocha.com) or ‘berries' (http://www.busuu.com). This serves to motivate participants by rewarding them for their progress and for their peer review activities. In order to consider if, or how, to integrate SNSs into the UK HE curriculum it is important to consider the views of practitioners and learners towards such sites and whether they consider them to have a potential role in HE language education. The paper will report on the outcomes of two small research projects which have sought to establish the view of both practitioners and students towards SNSs in the HE context. When considered overall the practitioners were more positive about the site than the learners.

This article is a literature review on accessible three decades publicized studies about student motivation learning Arabic which was conducted in different countries and contexts. Due to the importance of Arabic in Islam as the sacred language, those research are expected to reveal the religious aspects in maintaining and shaping student motivation in learning Arabic. Unfortunately, the issue did not likely obtain adequate attention from most of the researchers. Interestingly though, review on that studies still managed to reveal that the researchers apparently mentioned the role of identity in their studies. However, it was not supported by the proper analysis which made only little can be recognized from the role of religious identity in shaping the motivation. This circumstance likely has taken place since most of the researchers did not use the poststructuralist approach which may bring them to reveal a deeper understanding of the role of identity in Arabic language learning. Furthermore, in order to obtain the more precise finding on the role of identity in maintaining student motivation, it is suggested to use the approach when addressing student motivation during Arabic learning process.
