Maryam Jameelah was a Jewish-American lady who, after embracing Islam, selected Pakistan as her adopted abode. Mostly her conversion to Islam and fierce criticism of western civilization became the topic of discussion among academics. However, her work for da‘wah, so evident since her childhood, did not find much attention in the literary circles. A study of her life and works can reveal answers to the questions such as how she engaged herself in this field, what is the methodology adopted by her, and how does her work is useful for the women interested in da‘wah. Analyzing her published books and articles along with the unpublished material found in her library, the current paper focuses on the practical aspects of her da‘wah activities. It is argued that being a convert, she was aware of the problems of people who either converted to Islam or had an interest in it. Thus, targeting an English-speaking audience, she did not only write a bulk of literature to disseminate her understanding of Islam in Euro-American communities, but also practically contributed to this field through her discussions with non-Muslims, correspondence, and economic support for Islamic organizations.

Raksts iepazīstina ar latviešu izcelsmes Lietuvas arhitekta un inženiera Kārļa Reisona (Karolis Reisonas; 1894–1981) profesionālo darbību mūža otrajā pusē – no 1930. gada Kauņā, Panevēžā un Adelaidā – un viņa darbu nozīmi Lietuvas arhitektūras vēsturē. K. Reisons bija viens no spilgtākajiem 20. gadsimta starpkaru perioda Lietuvas modernās arhitektūras radītājiem, kopā ar citiem slaveniem Lietuvas arhitektiem veidoja īpašo starpkaru perioda Kauņas modernās arhitektūras stilu. No 1949. gada Reisonu ģimene dzīvoja Adelaidā, Austrālijā. Pēc viņa projektiem Lietuvā uzcelti trīs neatkarības pieminekļi – Šauļu Neatkarības piemineklis, Kauņas Brīvības pieminekļa postaments un Kauņas Romas katoļu Kristus Augšāmcelšanās baznīca. 14 no viņa projektētām celtnēm Kauņā un Šauļos ir iekļautas Lietuvas nekustamo kultūras vērtību sarakstā. Agrīniem K. Reisona projektiem raksturīgs historisms, eklektisma elementi, «ķieģeļu stils», vēlākie projekti iezīmējas ar modernismam raksturīgu askētisko racionālismu, funkcionālismu, piemērošanos pie pilsētbūvnieciskā un kultūrvēsturiskā konteksta. I.V. Zholtovsky’s name as well as his architecture are imagined as fully associated with Italian influences. Meanwhile, by the beginning of the 20th century, Italy was by no means the most significant country of palladianism: this stylistic movement had been developed much more in England, in addition the first monograph on Palladio was published in London (1902). Having studied the biographical documents of Zholtovsky, one can conclude that the “English theme” in his life was no less significant than the “Italian”. Moreover, this relation was not limited to the sphere of political or cultural preferences, but strongly affected the architect professional activities. By the example of Zholtovsky’s first independent work, the Horseracing Society house in Moscow, one can trace how the creative credo of Zholtovsky-neoclassicism was formed; how from imitation of the British Victorian style, through the study of English architectural books, he came to his own version of neoclassic style (that was so far from the patriotic-nostalgic features of the pre-revolutionary decades of Russian architecture).

The article studies the system of German professional charitable organizations that existed in the late 18th - early 20th century. Charitable associations related to professional activities are conditionally divided into three categories: 1) shelters for representatives of various professions; 2) societies and mutual aid funds; 3) associations providing various assistance to the poor segments of the city population. We analyse the underlying mechanisms and functions of philanthropic institutions created either by German charitable organizations or private individuals for representatives of certain professions; in some cases we overview their financing as well. The article provides brief look at German immigrant mutual aid funds and principles of their operations. Charitable support was especially necessary for the Germans who had recently arrived in the city and had not yet found and employment, as well to the layers of German population unable to work. By analyzing the means of inter-societal support and external charity efforts it is possible to identify and suggest possible ways to provide social assistance to foreigners who come to St. Petersburg for the purpose of professional employment.

In the conditions of intensification of various aspects of human life, the training of specialists who meet the needs of society and the state is of particular importance. The professional profile of a lawyer, according to the normative documents, assumes as an obligatory component of le-gal competence the ability to reasonably and clearly construct oral and written speech, as well as to carry out written and oral communication in Russian. Expressiveness of speech is an inte-gral element of these competencies. However, as practice shows, the culture of speech of specialists in the field of law cannot be considered sufficient, which clearly indicates a contradic-tion between the official requirements for specialists in this field and the real state of affairs. It occurs mainly due to the relatively low level of knowledge on the issues of achieving expressive-ness of speech, as well as due to ignoring this requirement as a component of the communicative culture of a lawyer. The revealed discrepancy determined the purpose of the work, the essence of which is to consider expressiveness as the quality of speech of lawyers, from the standpoint of its essential characteristics, as well as methods and conditions of implementation. To achieve this goal, an analysis of the current definitions of the concept of “expressiveness of speech” was carried out, which made it possible to substantiate the following: the expressive speech, subject to the condi-tions imposed on it, is definite, consistent, substantiated, understandable and expressive. To achieve expressiveness in a public legal environment, various tropes are used (comparison, metaphors, epithets, personifications, and others) and figures of speech (antithesis, anaphora, epiphora, repetitions, inversion, and the like). Theoretical and empirical study of the literature, corresponding to the selected problem, made it possible to conclude that knowledge of the essential features of expressiveness as a quality of speech and mastery of the methods of its implementation, under certain conditions, allow a lawyer to increase the efficiency of communication in professional activities.
