are valuable source of vitamins, minerals and fibers important for healthy human nutrition. However, an increased level of heavy metals in vegetables has been noticed in recent years. This study was conducted with an aim to analyze content of heavy metals, cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr) in 11 vegetable species which are the most common in human diet. Vegetables were collected from three green markets (Limanska, Futoska and Riblja pijaca) in Novi Sad, during September and October, from 2009 to 2011. Heavy metal contents were analyzed in edible parts of tomato, potato, spinach, onion, beetroot, parsley, parsnip, carrot, cauliflower, pepper and broccoli using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Varian, AAS 240FS). The results showed statistically significant differences in element concentrations among analyzed vegetables. In general, the highest metal pollution was observed in the year of 2011. Spinach was found to contain the highest metals content - 0.89 ?g/g for Cd, 5.81 ?g/g for Pb, and 3.67 ?g/g for Cr. According to Serbian official regulations, 18.18% of all analyzed species exceeded maximum permissible level for Cd, 9.09% for Pb, while for Cr these limits are not defined. Elevated content of heavy metals in vegetables might be related to soil contamination, atmospheric depositions during transportation and marketing. Thus, a continuous monitoring of vegetables on markets should be performed in order to prevent potential health risks to consumers.

The aim of the study was to determine the source for contents of heavy metals in soils of landfill sites in Ulaanbaatar. Samples were collected from ash of the burned waste near the landfill sites to identify content of heavy metals such as plumbum, chromium, cadmium, nickel and zinc. There are total of 300 mg/kg chromium and 700 mg/kg zinc identified from ash of burned electrical wire, 1000 mg/kg plumbum is identified from the ash of burned tires. According to the comparison of heavy metal contents in landfill sites, landfill of industrial waste has higher content rate of chromium and cadmium than other landfill sites. These open burnings and industrial waste have considerable influences on contaminated soil with heavy metals. This is not only a source for soil contamination but also a risk to air and water pollution or resident health. Therefore, it is indispensable to develop waste management for human health and environmental protection.

On the basis of investigation of specific heavy metals contaminated site, use compound heavy metal hazard quotients to do a assessment for potential health risk. The primarily detected excessive heavy metals are Zn, Gr, Cu and Hg. Results indicate that: in the surface (0~30 cm) and subsurface (30~70 cm), the compound heavy metal hazard quotients of sampling point 7#, 12#, 13# 6#, 7#, 12#, and 13# are greater than 1, and soil exists heavy metal contamination; in 70cm~100cm soil layer, the hazard quotients of all monitoring points are less than 1, therefore in these layers soil is not contaminated, and there are no need for remediation. The result reflects compound heavy metal contamination directly, and provides a reference for later remediation work.

Saguling reservoir in West Java Province is becoming increasingly polluted by heavy metals. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of four heavy metals such as Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb concentration at Saguling Reservoir at ’2 sampling location. Water samples were collected during rainy and summer 2008-2017 to determine the spatial distribution seasonal and temporal variation of different heavy metal contents. Mean metals concentrations in summer seasons were Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb higher than rainy season. Mean concentration of Cd, Cu, Cr, and Pb in water samples were accordance water quality standard in both season. Heavy metal pollution that occurs in the Saguling reservoir must be monitored because this reservoir is planned to be a source of raw water for Bandung City.

Heavy metals naturally are non-biodegradable constituents of the earth’s crust that accumulate and persist indefinitely in the ecosystem as a result of both human and natural activities. Their contamination of vegetables remains an issue of public health interest due to the frequency, and quantity of consumption. The over exposure to these heavy metals continues to pose serious health threat globally. This study was aimed to assess the heavy metal contents of staple vegetables [Telfairia occidentalis, Amaranthus hybridus and Ocimum gratissimum] within Enugu metropolis; the leaves were screened for heavy metals [Arsenic As, Lead Pb, Cadmium Cd, Nickel Ni, Chromium Cr and Cobalt Co], by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Results (Mean±SD,  mgkg-1 ) showed that Amaranthus hybridus: contained [Pb-0.109±0.350, Cr -0.161±0.004]; Ocimum gratissimum: [Ni-0.179±0.028, Cd-0.033±0.006, Cr-0.176±0.036], and Telfairia occidentalis: [Pb-0.153±0.139, Co-0.198±0.148]; of which some values were slightly above WHO/FAO standards. Although, the estimated daily intakes (EDIs) were below referenced tolerable daily intakes (TDIs). The hazard quotients (HQs) were below 1 (HQ<1), but As and Cd, were exceptions; while the hazard index (HI) values were all above 1 (HI>1). The slightly above standard references of some of these heavy metals, and HI>1 values in this study are a concern, as potential health risks may arise amidst the population over a period of time, therefore, there is need to eliminate the likely sources of the latent contamination.

Objective: The unhygienic nature of our local markets, including fish handlers, may contribute to the presence of microorganisms in smoked fish leading to food poisoning. Furthermore, heavy metals can find their way into the food chain through fish raising public health concerns. This study assessed the microbial load and some heavy metals in smoked fishes (bongafish and catfish) sold in urban and rural markets in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: Standard microbiological techniques and analytical procedures were used for microbial and heavy metals analyses, respectively. Results: The results revealed that all the smoked fish obtained from the two markets were contaminated with heavy metals and microorganisms. Zinc was the most frequently detected heavy metal in both fish types (catfish: 15.50 ± 9.99 mg/kg; and bongafish: 16.40 ± 12.28 mg/kg) obtained from urban market, while in the rural market, it was cadmium (catfish: 15.95 ± 10.15 mg/kg; and bongafish: 18.25 ± 7.15 mg/kg). The overall elemental concentrations of the heavy metals in the fishes were in decreasing order of Cadmium>Zinc>Nickel>Cobalt>Lead. The most predominant bacterial species in fishes from the urban market was Bacillus subtilis (7.5 × 104 ± 0.871 colony- forming unit/g) while Candida tropicalis (9.2 × 104 ± 0.105) was the most predominant fungal species. More bacteria and fungi were encountered in fishes from the rural market than from the urban market. The differences in the microbial loads from the two markets were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Conclusion: There is a potential health risk of eating smoked fishes that are poorly stored or handled in the market as a result of heavy metal contamination and the presence of the pathogenic organism. Therefore, maintenance and enforcement of adequate sanitation practices in these markets should be encouraged to avert unpleasant health consequences.

Rice is one of the major crops as well as the staple food in Malaysia. However, historical mining activity has raised a concern regarding heavy metal contamination in paddy plants, especially in Perak, a state with major tin mining during the late nineteenth century. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the heavy metals (As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr) contamination in paddy soils and paddy plants in three districts in Perak. The content of heavy metals was determined using ICP-MS, while the absorption and transferability of heavy metals in the paddy plants were investigated through enrichment (EF) and translocation (TF) factors. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to recognize the pattern of heavy metal contaminations in different sampling areas. Health risk assessment was performed through calculation of various indices. The quantification results showed that root contained highest concentration of the studied heavy metals, with As exhibiting the highest concentration. The EF results revealed the accumulation of As, Cu, and Cr in the rice grains while PCA showed the different compositional pattern in the different sampling areas. The health risk assessment disclosed both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks in the local adults and children. Overall, findings from this study show that heavy metal contamination poses potential health risks to the residents and control measure is required.

Leafy vegetables and tubers contaminated by heavy metals will cause potential health risk to human beings. An analysis was carried out to study the heavy metal contamination in tubers and leafy vegetables at Kottayam district, Kerala. The results indicated that higher levels of lead were recorded in all of the samples analyzed when compared to the WHO permissible limits (0.1 mg/kg) for tubers and leafy vegetables, except in Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott., collected from Erattupetta market. Cadmium content was higher in both the tubers and leafy vegetables collected from Changanacherry market. Therefore, regular assessment of the accumulation of heavy metals in leafy vegetables and tubers is the need of the era.

From June to July 2012, the heavy metal contents of Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn, As and Hg in bivalves and the edible fish in Dandong market were determined by using incomplete digestion - AAS method. The results showed that the enrichment of heavy metals in bivalves was higher than those in fish. Significant differences in metal concentrations were found between the tissues of fish. Cd, Pb and Cr were mainly distributed in the scales and gill of the fish. The content of heavy metals in the edible parts of the fish was far below “the human consumption sanitation standard.” The eating quality was good for the edible part of the fish. The content of Cd in bivalves exceeded “the human consumption sanitation standard.” Bivalves containing heavy metals reduced its value for food and attention should be paid on the results.

One of the most important components of the natural environment is soil. Soil is a non-renewable natural resources on which the whole human society is dependent for various goods and services. The intensive, and unsustainable anthropogenic practices along with the rapid growth of the human population have led to continuous expansion and concern for the degradation of soil. The agricultural soil is exposed to a plethora of contaminants, the most significant contaminant among them is heavy metals. The major sources of heavy metal contamination are associated with agriculture, industries, and mining. The increase of heavy metal contents in the soil system affects all organisms via biomagnification. In this chapter, we will review various conventional and contemporary physical or chemical and biological techniques for remediation of contaminated soil. The advanced solution for degraded soil is integrating innovative technologies that will provide profitable and sustainable land-use strategies.

Abstract Background With the continuous advancement of global urbanisation, humans have begun to overutilise or improperly utilise the natural resources of bay areas, which has led to a series of ecological and environmental problems. To evaluate the spatial distributions and potential ecological risks of heavy metals in sediments of Shenzhen Bay, China, an analysis of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn regarding their content, correlation (Pearson coefficient), pollution degree, and potential ecological risks was conducted. Results The heavy metal contents in the sediments decreased in the order of Zn > Cu > Cr > Pb > As > Cd, with contents of 175.79 mg kg−1, 50.75 mg kg−1, 40.62 mg kg−1, 37.10 mg kg−1, 18.27 mg kg−1, and 0.20 mg kg−1, respectively. The results showed that the overall sediment quality in Shenzhen Bay generally met the China Marine Sediment Quality criteria, and the heavy metal contents were significantly lower than those reported in the same type of bay area worldwide. Furthermore, the order of grade of potential ecological risk of the heavy metals was as follows: As and Cd were found to pose moderate ecological risks, with their potential hazard indices reaching a high level, whereas the potential ecological hazard indices of Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cr were all at relatively low levels. Conclusions The potential hazard indices of the heavy metals decreased from the inner bay toward the outside. The accumulation and content of the analysed heavy metals in the Shenzhen Bay sediments are mainly controlled by historical land-source pollution and land reclamation projects. This study presents the current state of sediment quality in Shenzhen Bay. The results may assist in the definition of future bay area management measures specifically targeted at monitoring heavy metal contamination.
