Civic Education in Cyprus — Issues in Focus: A Curriculum Research Study

This paper presents a curriculum research study aiming at investigating how citizenship in primary schools of Cyprus is constructed. First, the central issues, concepts and attitudes imported by civic education textbooks are identified and their relationship with the unresolved political problem of Cyprus is examined. Furthermore, the way in which civic education textbooks may affect the roles of the citizens is investigated. Content analysis of the civic education textbooks is performed on the basis of 12 factors which were the issues, concepts and institutions identified from the general aim of education in Cyprus as well as from the aims of civic education in primary schools. Findings are discussed in the light of the citizenship, social cohesion, conflict resolution and multiculturalism debate.

This research was motivated by lack of civics student learning outcomes. Low learningoutcomes are caused by: (a) students do not really follow civics and they talk to each othersawaktu teacher explains the lesson; (B) students are not active in learning; (C) if the teacherasking questions, very few students who answered; and (d) very few students were askedabout the learning that has not been understood, in addition to the learning activities in theclassroom dominated by teachers and children are much more powerful. This study aims toimprove learning outcomes civics through cooperative learning model NHT. This study is aclass action, which was conducted in 018 primary schools Ukui 1 Subdistrict Ukui. This studyfocused on students' learning outcomes data civics. Based on the results of the study revealedthat the civic education learning outcomes of students has increased. This is evidenced by:Improved student learning outcomes at the preliminary data the number of students who passare 15 students (50%), increasing in the first cycle increased to 26 students (87%) and incycle II further increased up to 27 students (90 %).

There is evidence to suggest that young children more readily absorb the subtle messages that are encoded in any type of text and talk, and what they take away from these texts contributes in helping them develop their own identity in relation to their role in society. In this paper, we examine the construction of ethnic identity in a selection of English language textbooks targeted at young Malaysian children in primary schools. Based on a content analysis of visual and verbal language in two Primary Three English language textbooks, we report on the encoded messages that are transmitted to young Malaysian children about their place in society. The findings reveal significant imbalances in the way characters of different ethnic backgrounds are represented. This imbalance is a cause for concern as the message conveyed to young Malaysian children could be potentially damaging. Keywords: textbook, ethnicity, identity construction

International aid has influenced and, in part, shaped the artistic sector in Africa's Great Lakes region (DRC, Rwanda, Burundi) since the 1990s, a period marked by numerous conflicts and mass violence. Due to NGOs’ programmatic foci, artists performing for social change are increasingly compelled to focus on reconciliation and conflict resolution, generating political awareness and bringing about social change, healing and peacemaking. Through a comparative analysis of European and local productions on the genocide this article asks, how and why does an ‘NGO-style theatre’ develop a specific audience in the region? How have themes such as mass violence, inter-ethnic conflict and social cohesion become the main concerns of the territory's theatre? How do performances made and/or sponsored by NGOs challenge not only theatre's form, its social stakes and functions, but also the conception of its audience and the relationships between actors and spectators?

Background The value of qualitative research is increasingly acknowledged in health studies, as well as the demand for employing rigorous strategies. Although the literature recognises that reflexivity is a valuable and rigorous strategy, few studies unravel the practical employment of reflexivity as a strategy for ensuring rigour and quality in qualitative research. Aim To present a practical example of how reflexivity can be employed as a strategy for ensuring rigour by reviewing 13 narratives from the author's reflexive diary on qualitative research. Methods Content analysis and narrative analysis were used to approach and analyse data. Findings Analysis of the posited qualitative research study found five main outcomes of the influence of reflexivity as a strategy to establish criteria of rigour. Conclusions Further research is needed to show how reflexivity can be employed as a strategy in qualitative research to: i) establish criteria of rigour; ii) monitor the researcher's subjectivity in generating credible findings.

AbstractThis article reports on part of a commissioned research study into students with severe challenging behaviour in primary schools serviced by the Catholic Education Office (Parramatta Diocese) in western Sydney. The focus of the study was on the prevalence of severe challenging behaviour and the nature of presenting behaviour. Questionnaires were directed to school staff and information was obtained from 41 of the 53 primary schools in the diocese. Using very conservative criteria, the estimate of numbers of students with severe challenging behaviour was approximately 1 per school. Students were typically male and were academically below average. The most frequently reported challenging behaviour (e.g., calling out, out of seat) was inherently minor in nature for the most part, but at high frequency this could be extremely disruptive to the operation of a classroom. More serious behaviours, such as physical aggression to other school students and staff, were also reported at concerning frequency, noting that such behaviours place staff and other students at risk. The present study adds to the limited Australian data describing students in regular schools with challenging behaviour by providing specific information on the classroom frequency of such behaviour and the academic performance of students.

Abstract In any research study, there is an underlying research process that should begin with a clear articulation of the study’s goal. The study’s goal drives this process; it determines many study features including the estimand of interest, the analytic approaches that can be used to estimate it, and which coefficients, if any, should be interpreted. “Misalignment” can occur in this process when analytic approaches and/or interpretations do not match the study’s goal; misalignment is potentially more likely to arise when study goals are ambiguously framed. This study documented misalignment in the observational epidemiologic literature and explored how the framing of study goals contributes to its occurrence. The following misalignments were examined: 1) use of an inappropriate variable selection approach for the goal (a “goal-methods” misalignment) and 2) interpretation of coefficients of variables for which causal considerations were not made (e.g., Table 2 Fallacy, a “goal-interpretation” misalignment). A random sample of 100 articles published 2014-2018 in the top 5 general epidemiology journals were reviewed. Most reviewed studies were causal, with either explicitly stated (13/103, 13%) or associationally-framed (71/103, 69%) aims. Full alignment of goal-methods-interpretations was infrequent (9/103, 9%), although clearly causal studies (5/13, 38%) were more often fully aligned than seemingly causal ones (3/71, 4%). Goal-methods misalignments were common (34/103, 33%), but most frequently, methods were insufficiently reported to draw conclusions (47/103, 46%). Goal-interpretations misalignments occurred in 31% (32/103) of studies and occurred less often when the methods were aligned (2/103, 2%) compared with when the methods were misaligned (13/103, 13%).

The appearance of the trailer for The Santri movie has sparked various responses on the internet, this can be observed from the existence of parties who are pro and contra with the movie trailer. This difference can be seen from the way the audience responds to and interpret the contents of the movie trailer. This study can understand the image of the student at Islamic Boarding School in the movie trailer of The Santri which can be seen through the account NU Channel on YouTube. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach model with content analysis on movie trailers. The results of the study show that the image of the student at an Islamic Boarding School in the movie trailer of The Santri can be divided into two parts, namely: first, an explicit image such as students must have self-confidence, have high dreams, love religion and their nation, have a good faith, and be a loyal friend. Second, implicit images such as students who have a simple, tough, and brave image, accept differences, and are open-minded.

The purpose of this research study was to address the question: how do First Nations leaders and scholars articulate the rationales for First Nations run schools in Ontario? Documents were collected from two First Nations websites, Assembly of First Nations and Chiefs of Ontario, and subjected to a manifest and latent content analysis. Three themes representing rationales emerged from the findings: self-governance over education, improvement of socio-economic conditions and sustainability. An underlying rationale that linked the three themes indicated that First Nations need recognition of self-government in order to control their education system, improve its quality and enhance learner outcomes.

<p align="center"><strong>Abstrak</strong></p><p>Isu-isu terkait budaya, ekonomi, dan nilai seringkali menghasilkan konflik. Tak terkecuali dengan isu perebutan wilayah. Salahsatu perang terbesar yang terkait dengan isu sengketa wilayah adalah perang Iran-Irak 1988. Perang Iran-Irak 1988 membawa sejarah besar dari kedua negara yang saling berhubungan dengan isu perebutan wilayah, perebutan pengaruh ideologi, dan isu ekonomi. Perang yang berlangsung cukup lama ini membuat Iran dan Irak menyadari akan kerugian jangka panjang yang dialami. Pada akhirnya, kedua negara sepakat untuk berdamai dalam sebuah proses yang melibatkan pihak ketiga. Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa mengambil peran sebagai pihak ketiga yang membantu penyelesaian perang antara Iran dan Irak. Resolusi no.598 yang disusun oleh Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa mengarisbawahi akan pentingnya gencatan senjata dengan banyaknya kerugian dan korban jiwa yang muncul. Penelitian ini berargumen bahwa upaya Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa menyusun resolusi no.598 dalam menyelesaikan perang Iran-Irak adalah penerapan dari mekanisme compliance bargaining pada proses resolusi konflik.</p><p><strong>Kata kunci:</strong> compliance bargaining, resolusi konflik, rezim, gencatan senjata</p><p> </p><p align="center"><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>Conflictual issues can be about economy, culture and values, or even a border dispute. The class cannot be avoided because of several issues triggering the conflict and also several interests. One of the bigger wars that can be was the Iran-Iraq War at 1980-1988. This war brought the long history between both of those countries, which were related with border disputes, ideological influences, and economic war. Those of both countries is thinking that if the war is still being run, it is not giving any good advantage. The damage was so big. So, it required a process to bring the two states involved war into one meeting to talk about peace or end the war. The process is called a peace process. In this case, the peace process arranged by the involvement of third party. The United Nations take a role as the third party in Iran-Iraq War by formed a Resolution no 598. In the resolution the council expressed its concern that, despite its calls for ceasefire, the conflict between Iran and Iraq continued with heavy loss of life and material destruction. The Iran-Iraq war was ended through the resolution no 598 that was produced by the United Nations. Furthermore, this paper argue that the way of the United Nations ended the Iran-Iraq war through Resolution no 598 is implementing the theory of compliance bargaining in conflict resolution.</p><p><strong>Keywords</strong>: compliance bargaining, conflict resolution, regime, ceasefire</p>
