The literature about the medieval state is enormous. Many very distinguished scholars, especially in Germany, have given their ripest thought to the problems which the word “state” suggests when it is applied to medieval society. In recent years several manful efforts have been made to extricate the subject from the trammels of law and philosophy. In Germany, for example, Georg von Below, Fritz Kern and, latest of all, Heinrich Mitteis, have, each in his own way, tried to deal with it as earlier writers, like Waitz, Ranke and Ficker, dealt with it. They have approached it from a political or social or economic point of view, and have made themselves independent, so far as they could, of the categories of the jurists and the generalisations suggested by a study of medieval political thought. Even these exceptional men have not found it easy to avoid categories of their own.

To implement any successful policy, research about the subject-matter is essential. Lack of knowledge would result in failure and, from an economic point of view, it would lead to a waste of scarce resources. The book under review is essentially a manual which highlights the use of research for development. The book is divided into two parts. Part One informs the reader about concepts and some theory, and Part Two deals with the issue of undertaking research for development. Both parts have 11 chapters each. Chapter 1 asks the basic question: Is research important in development work? The answer is that it is. Research has many dimensions: from the basic asking of questions to the more sophisticated broad-based analysis of policy issues. The chapter, in short, stresses the usefulness of research which development workers ignore at their own peril.

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars but in ourselvesShakespeare, Julius CaesarI wish to speak to you tonight about common dilemmas we face as scholars, citizens, and human beings. Each of these rôles involves distinctive obligations and at the same time casts a shadow on the others. Let me begin by discussing a subject that has enthralled or distracted (depending on your point of view) many members of our association over the last few years, the subject of religious resurgence. I shall confine my remarks to Islamic resurgence, since my own research in Jordan and Iran makes me somewhat more familiar with the phenomenon as it works in local contexts there, although the questions raised may quite possibly apply to the phenomena of Jewish and Christian resurgence.

Abstract: Telemedicine has been seen as an important tool for facing the challenges of universal health systems. The goal of this article is to discuss the main challenges to its full dissemination in Brazil. Being a somewhat new area, there are not many scientific papers that systematize it. This article is an exploratory paper, as it aims to provide an overall perspective on the subject. From an economic point of view, telemedicine is a strategic area due to its an intrinsic potential of being a source for generating innovation, for requiring and incorporating technological breakthroughs from other areas, and for its interdisciplinary nature and dynamic inter-relations that drive different industries. From the social perspective, it has the potential to make access to health services democratic, by connecting remote regions with health services located in hospitals and centers of reference for prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Introduction. Property is a multifaceted phenomenon, so that, even within one science, there is no general concept that would reflect its meaning. At the same time, we are of the opinion that the most important aspects of property for modern society are economic and legal, despite the fact that property, first of all, was considered as a philosophical category. In scientific sources, the commonality of features that characterize the property on the legal side (possession, use and disposal), is called the legal (legal) category, and economic (the desire to own goods (both tangible and intangible), the relationship between owners, owner and direct producer of goods (subject-subject relations)) - economic category. The purpose of the paper is to consider the essence of property as an economic category. Results. Analyzing the category of «property» from an economic point of view, we can identify its basic basis: the relationship of different owners with each other, as well as owners and direct producers of goods. In the «owner – owner» relationship, we observe the economic process of exchange of goods. At the same time, the owner-non-owner relationship is non-economic, so it is not the subject of economists' research. The relationship between different owners, as well as owners and direct producers of goods is the material basis of our society. Conclusion. Property as an economic category is characterized by: first, the result of the manifestation of the subject of his will - the desire to own the goods of the world; secondly, goods both material and non-material; third, the social relations and interrelationships of the owners among themselves, as well as the owners and direct producers of goods.

Conflicts between different interests are inevitable in every business organization. Therefore, it is not surprising that the number and intensity of conflicts is sometimes very high. Conflict resolution is a skill without which managers can hardly succeed in their business. The subject of research in this paper is conflict management from a technical and economic point of view. The paper defines and analyzes the notion of leadership, that is, elements and dimensions of leadership, the notion of leader, and theoretical approaches to leadership. In addition to the above, the concept of conflict, more specifically its type, levels of conflict, consequences and causes, and techniques of conflict resolution have been defined and analyzed. An online survey (based on the LinkedIn Business Social Network) was conducted to determine how individuals in a production organization respond and resolve conflicts as well as the results of the same. Based on theoretical scientific approach, the conducted research and the analysis of the results, conclusions and recommendations are given, as well as key questions for future research.

I must begin by apologizing for taking a somewhat well-worn subject for my theme. My reason is that I have not yet found a recent treatment of it which is altogether to my satisfaction. Most of them seem to me too often to approach the subject from a point of view which, in a way, expects too much from the study of Plato or any other ancient author, and consequently either makes exaggerated claims for it or fails to do justice to what we really can learn.

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the impact of procedural filter established by Constitutional Amendment 45, which is the general impact on the extraordinary appeal and its aimed speedy trial by the Supreme Court. This is an extraordinary appeal admissibility requirement, which was inspired by the North American law and aims to resolve the crisis experienced by the Supreme Court. To check the general defense must take into account the existence or not of relevant issues from the economic point of view, political, social, or legal, exceeding the subjective interests of the cause. It is precisely at this point that the relevance guard with the Tax Law, since this branch (or sector, as they prefer other) impacts the life of incisively citizen. Thus, most of the tax claims, due to their social and legal impact, leading into the Supreme Court, and the Court is responsible for defining the subject of more consistent as possible.

I have written a good deal about diplomacy during the War of the Austrian Succession, in defiance of Carlyle, who calls it “an unintelligible, huge, English-and-Foreign Delirium … a universal rookery of Diplomatists, whose loud cackle and cawing is now as if gone mad to us; their work wholly fallen putrescent and avoidable, dead to all creatures.” But I have never found occasion to say all that I wanted to say about a curious and little known episode that occurred just about the close of the war. Some interesting letters about Legge's mission to Berlin were printed in the first of Archdeacon Coxe's massive volumes on The Administration of Henry Pelham. But these letters serve to whet rather than to satisfy the enquirer's appetite, and there is a great deal more material in the Record Office and in the Newcastle Papers. Also it is possible in the present day to find in the sixth volume of Frederick's Politische Correspondenz ample accounts of the mission from the Prussian point of view. As I have had occasion to survey all this evidence, it occurred to me that I might fill an obvious gap in my studies of the diplomacy of the period by taking Legge's mission as the subject of my Presidential Address, and by endeavouring to bring out is connection with the general history of Europe and especially with the contemporary negotitations at Aix-la-chappelle.

The possibility of completely automatizing the navigation of merchant ships has been the subject of a recent study and prototype anti-collision radar equipment has already been engineered and evaluated. Indications are that, particularly from an economic point of view, there is little likelihood of such equipment going to sea in the foreseeable future, if it is accepted that a principle aim of any such system should be to reduce manning requirements below three watch-keeping deck officers and a captain. The main reason is that complex navigational problems exist at the beginning and end of the voyage and the presence of a trained watch-keeping deck officer offers the most economic solution to these problems. Detailed analysis of these navigational problems shows that the simple application of automatization techniques to existing equipment offers improved, standards of navigational efficiency and thus increased safety and higher productivity. A new radar plotting system, the Decca 969/ARP, is designed to assist a single watch-keeping deck officer to navigate more efficiently by automatizing certain difficult navigational tasks now performed manually. That the economic need for automatic or semi-automatic navigational equipment and the design of such equipment is a relatively complex matter is illustrated by the recent very full report issued by the U.S. Maritime Administration. It was clear by 1958 that new navigational radar equipment would be required; a design study was therefore commenced.

Our organization is known as the Political Science Association, and yet the subject to which it is devoted lacks the first essential of a modern science—a nomenclature incomprehensible to educated men. Other sciences employ terms of art which are exact because barbarous, that is remote from common usage, and therefore devoid of the connotations which give to language its richness and at the same time an absence of precision. But the want of an exact terminology is not the only defect of our subject. It suffers also from imperfect development of the means of self-expansion. The natural sciences grow by segmentation, each division, like the severed fragments of an earthworm, having a vitality of its own. Thus in zoölogy and botany we hear of cytology, histology, morphology and physiology, expressions which correspond, perhaps, with aspects of our own ancient, yet infantile, branch of learning. The first of the divisions already mentioned, cytology, deals with the cell as the unit of structure, and bears thus an analogy to the study of man as an individual, a social being by nature, no doubt, but considered from this point of view as a separate personality; to some extent at least as an end in himself. It corresponds rather to psychology than politics. Histology, if I am correctly informed, is concerned with the tissues made by the organic connection of many cells, the substances of which the body is formed, and by means of which its manifold operations are conducted. We may fancy that it has its counterpart in sociology, that science of which the late Gabriel Tarde remarked that it was named before its birth, although the time had come when it ought to be born.
