ABSTRACT Objective To assess the efficiency of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) and photobiomodulation (PBM) interventions in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement during clear aligner therapy (CAT). Materials and Methods This retrospective study was carried out on the records of 84 subjects who were treated using CAT. Twenty-eight patients were treated using CAT with a daily use of LIPUS for 20 minutes, 28 patients were treated using CAT with a daily use of PBM for 10 minutes, and 28 patients were treated using CAT alone. The total duration of treatment was recorded for all patients. One-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey test were used to assess whether there was any significant difference in total treatment duration among the three groups (P < .05). Results The mean treatment durations in days were 719 ± 220, 533 ± 242, and 528 ± 323 for the control, LIPUS, and PBM groups, respectively. The LIPUS group showed a 26% reduction, on average, in treatment duration when compared with the control group, whereas the PBM group showed an average 26.6% reduction in the treatment duration when compared with the control group. The results showed that there were statistically significant differences among the groups (P = .011). Treatment durations were significantly reduced in the LIPUS and PBM groups as compared with the control (P = .027 and P = .023, respectively), with no statistically significant differences between the LIPUS and PBM groups (P = .998). Conclusions Daily use of LIPUS or PBM as adjunctive interventions during CAT could reduce the duration of orthodontic treatment.

The aim of this retrospective clinical study was to determine if there is a reduction in the overall treatment duration in orthodontic patients using low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) and Invisalign SmartTrack® clear aligners. Data were collected from the first thirty-four patients (9 males, 25 females; average age 41.37 ± 15.02) who finished their orthodontic treatment using an intraoral LIPUS device and Invisalign clear aligners in a private clinic. The LIPUS parameters used by patients at home for 20 min/day were: ultrasonic frequency 1.5 MHz, pulse duration 200µs, pulse repetition rate 1 kHz, and spatial average-temporal average intensity 30mW/cm2. A control group (11 males, 23 females; average age 31.36 ± 14.41) matching for the same malocclusions was randomly selected from finished treatment cases of the same clinician. The date of first Invisalign attachment placement and first use of LIPUS application was recorded as T0, and the date of retainer delivery was recorded as T1. The treatment duration (T1–T0) and treatment reduction percentage with LIPUS device were collected and analyzed using two-sample t-test in Microsoft Excel. Treatment duration was significantly reduced in the LIPUS group (541.44 ± 192.23 days) compared to control group (1061.05 ± 455.64 days) (p < 0.05). The LIPUS group showed on average 49% reduction in the overall treatment time as compared to the control group. The average compliance of the patients using LIPUS was 66.02%. Patients who used LIPUS showed a clinically significant reduction in the overall orthodontic treatment duration compared to the control group who used Invisalign clear aligners only.

Background and Objectives: Mechanical stimulation can improve the structural properties of the fracture site and induce the differentiation of different cell types for bone regeneration. This study aimed to compare the effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound stimulation (LIPUS) versus whole body vibration (WBV) on healing of mandibular bone defects. Materials and Methods: A mandibular defect was created in 66 rats. The rats were randomly divided into two groups of rats. Each group was subdivided randomly by three groups (n = 11) as follows: (I) control group, (II) treatment with LIPUS, and (III) treatment with WBV. The radiographic changes in bone density, the ratio of lamellar bone to the entire bone volume, the ratio of the newly formed bone to the connective tissue and inflammation grade were evaluated after 1 and 2 months. Results: LIPUS significantly increased the radiographic bone density change compared to the control group at the first and second month postoperatively (p < 0.01). WBV only significantly increased the bone density compared to the control group at the second month after the surgery (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Application of LIPUS and WBV may enhance the regeneration of mandibular bone defects in rats. Although LIPUS and WBV are effective in mandibular bone healing, the effects of LIPUS are faster and greater than WBV.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> The study aim was to determine the effect of low intensity pulsed ultrasound therapy to reduce the effusion volumes and pain in patients with Knee OA.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> This study design was randomized controlled trial. Total 50 patients diagnosed with Knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to two groups. Group I was using treatment of low intensity pulsed ultrasound therapy and group II was administered TENS with home exercise respectively. Treatments were 6 days per week and duration of 2 week. The amount of effusion volume will be measured via ultrasonograpy in knee.<strong></strong></p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> The<strong> </strong>maximum number of cases are lying in age group &gt;60 years which is 28% and 40% in cases and control group respectively and age distribution in both the group is statistically not significant. The mean age of patients in cases and control group is 57.08±7.40 years and 58.04±9.93 years respectively.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Low intensity pulsed ultrasound therapy significantly reduced the effusion volumes and pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis.</p>

The aim was to study the nature of the morphological changes over time in the bone tissue around the implants under the influence of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound in the experiment. Materials and methods. Experimental studies were carried out on rabbits of the chinchilla breed, with dental implants installed in the tibia – two experimental groups with ultrasound and one control group. The animals were withdrawn from the experiment at 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks and histological examination of the sections of peri-implant tissues was carried out. Results. The processes of osseointegration of dental implants in all groups of animals occurred without disrupting the normal process sequence. In the early stages granulation tissue is formed, later it is replaced by fibrous-reticular and coarse-fibrous bone tissue, and at the end – by a more mature lamellar bone tissue. However, the timing and degree of maturation of bone tissue, as well as osseointegration of implants in groups using low-frequency low-intensity pulsed ultrasound and without it differed significantly. The study showed that ultrasound exposure to implants and surrounding tissues induces osteoreparation processes, stimulating neoangiogenesis in granulation and newly formed bone tissue. Conclusion. Application of ultrasound to implants and subsequent application to the peri-implant tissues during and after dental implantation promotes the formation of bone tissue, identical by the histostructure to the maternal bone.

Introduction: In vitro and in vivo put in evidence that the Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound therapy exerts a significant influence on cell function (cytoskeleton organization, stimulation of mitochondrial activity, ATP levels and plasma membrane). Objective: This study will analyze the radiation of low intensity pulsed ultrasound in fibroblast cells L 929. Method: In this study are presented the data from each exposure group average and standard deviation in each moment of evaluation (24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours). The control group (received no radiation), 0.2 W/cm2 with 10% pulse regime (1: 9 duty cycle), 0.2 W / cm2 with 20% pulse regime (2: 8 cycle work), 0.4 W/cm2 with pulse scheme 10% (1: 9 duty cycle), 0.4 W/cm2 with pulse scheme 20% (2: 8 duty cycle). The analyzes will be performed through optical microscopy, MTT method 3 - (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide, within the incubation times of 24, 48 and 72 hours. Results: Given the above study, the results presented in this project will be directed to increase the stimulation process and proliferation of fibroblast cells from the pulsed ultrasonic irradiation of low intensity, correlating with the healing process, neovascularization and repair. Conclusion: Therefore, the study of the effect of ultrasound from cell culture provides us with a simple and informative model on the significant aspects of the use of physical therapy in vivo system.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on tooth movement and root resorption in orthodontic patients. Twenty-one patients were included in a split-mouth study design (group 1). Ten additional patients were included with no LIPUS device being used and this group was used as the negative control group (group 2). Group 1 patients were given LIPUS devices that were randomly assigned to right or left side on upper or lower arches. LIPUS was applied to the assigned side that was obtained by randomization, using transducers that produce ultrasound with a pulse frequency of 1.5 MHz, a pulse repetition rate of 1 kHz, and average output intensity of 30 mW/cm2. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were taken before and after treatment. The extraction space dimensions were measured every four weeks and root lengths of canines were measured before and after treatment. The data were analyzed using paired t-test. The study outcome showed that the mean rate of tooth movement in LIPUS side was 0.266 ± 0.092 mm/week and on the control side was 0.232 ± 0.085 mm/week and the difference was statistically significant. LIPUS increased the rate of tooth movement by an average of 29%. For orthodontic root resorption, the LIPUS side (0.0092 ± 0.022 mm/week) showed a statistically significant decrease as compared to control side (0.0223 ± 0.022 mm/week). The LIPUS application accelerated tooth movement and minimized orthodontically induced tooth root resorption at the same time.

Abstract BackgroundAlthough Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) regiment has been applied to the treatment of cartilage injury clinically, the effect of LIPUS stress loading on the proliferation and differentiation of hUCMSCs is still controversial. Yet the specific mechanical mechanism of LIPUS stimulates cartilage differentiation of hUCMSCs has not been clarified.ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on proliferation and chondrogenic differentiation of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) via BMP2 /smad signaling pathway in vitro.MethodThe hUCMSCs at P4 were randomly divided into control group(no LIPUS), L30 group (30mW/cm2), L50 group (50mW/cm2), L80 group (80mW/cm2), each LIPUS group respectively loaded 5, 10, 20 min/d, the cell proliferation activity was detected by CCK-8 assay after continuous irradiation for 5 days. For chondrogenic differentiation, hUCMSCs were divided 4 groups as follows: control group, Noggin group, LIPUS group, Noggin+LIPUS group, LIPUS irradiation was given 50w/cm2, 5min/d. Cartilage formation after 3 weeks was evaluated by Alician blue staining for GAG and COL II immunohistochemical staining. Furthermore, RT-PCR analysis of Sox-9, COL II Aggrecan, BMP2, Smad1, Smad5 and Smad9. Result: (1) The proliferation activity of L50 group(50w/cm2 , 5min/d) was noticeably higher compared with other groups, Alcian blue staining of GAG , COL II fluorescent staining in the LIPUS group were much stronger, quantitative RT-PCR assays showed that the expression of COL II, GAG, Sox-9, smad1, smad5 and smad9 in LIPUS group was significantly increased. Conclusion:The suitable LIPUS irradiation can promote cell proliferation, 50mW/cm2 intensity at 5min/d is most significant. And it can promote chondrogenesis of hUCMSCs via upregulating MP2 /smads signaling pathway.

Backgrond: Until now, there have been many studies on the postoperative stability of orthognathic patients treated with traditional fixed orthodontic appliances. Recently, the use of clear aligners as orthodontic appliances has increased in orthodontic treatment for aesthetic and patient convenience. The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate the stability and characteristics of patients undergoing orthognathic surgery using clear aligners. Patients and Methods: This study was performed on patients who underwent orthognathic surgery by one surgeon at Pusan National University Dental Hospital from April 2017 to August 2021. A comparative study was conducted on five patients treated with clear aligners during orthodontic treatment and ten patients treated with traditional fixed appliances as a control group. Postoperative skeletal changes and recurrence were evaluated by cone beam computed tomography and lateral cephalometric radiographs taken two days postoperatively and six months postoperatively. Several measurement variables were used to confirm the presence or absence of recurrence, preoperative and postoperative orthodontic treatment period, and the number of extracted teeth. Results: Postoperative stability for six months after surgery was not significantly different between the clear aligner group and the traditional fixed appliance group. The preoperative orthodontic treatment period was also shorter in the clear aligner group, and the number of extracted premolar teeth and impacted teeth were also fewer in the clear aligner group, but there was no significant difference. Conclusions: Orthodontic treatment using clear aligners continues to develop, and it is believed that there is no limit to what can be accomplished during orthodontic surgery accompanied by clear aligners.

Previous studies have shown that therapeutic pulsed ultrasound (pulsed) has superior stimulatory effect on bone fracture healing compared with continuous ultrasound (continuous). Our predictive hypothesis was that pulsed ultrasound can produce better bone formation during mandibular osteodistraction than continuous ultrasound. Thirty-six New Zealand rabbits were divided into 3 groups of 12. Osteodistraction was performed at 3 mm/day for 5 days. Group 1 received pulsed, group 2 received continuous ultrasound, and group 3 was the control group (distraction only). Bone formation was assessed by quantitative bone density (QBD), mechanical testing, and histological examination. In the first 2 wks post-distraction, group 2 showed enhanced bone formation more than group 1 ( p < 0.05); however, in the 3rd and 4th wks, group 1 showed more bone formation than group 2 ( p < 0.05). Earlier stages of bone healing were enhanced more by continuous, whereas late stages were enhanced more by pulsed, ultrasound.
