THE CIMMERIAN CHRONOTOPE OF K. PAUSTOVSKY’S PROSE: COLOR REPRESENTATION

In the article, based on the K. G. Paustovsky’s Crimean text, the writer’s coloristic representation of Eastern Crimea, Cimmeria is established. The idea is considered to be topical in view of the task to reconstruct the writer’s color picture of the world. The author of the paper reveals the color spectrum used by K. G. Paustovsky, explains its uniqueness, compares the color code of K. G. Paustovsky and M. A. Voloshin in Cimmerian space visualization; describes the functional potential of color terms which is explicated in Cimmeria color chronotope development; reveals the regularities of K. G. Paustovsky’s color style of writing.

The purpose of the article is to reconstruct a fragment of K. Paustovsky’s coloristic picture of the world on the material of the story “Mescherskaya side”, which had not previously become the subject of special research carried out from the standpoint of linguistics of color, which determines the scientific novelty of this work. The research methodology is based on the descriptive and analytical method, the method of compatibility analysis, the method of contextual analysis, quantitative data processing. As the result of the research 1) the composition of color concepts, actualized by the writer in color chronotope creation, was revealed; only the color core of the story is represented by 24 color terms; 2) the dominants of the story color spectrum (black, green, gray) were determined; this color sequence is unique: it is recorded in Paustovsky’s works for the first time; 3) the color dominants denotative spheres (predominantly nature, artifacts, man) were established; 4) the functional potential of color terms was described; it includes the ontological function, the species function, the terminological function, as well as the function of temporal meaning transfer, the evaluative function, the aestheticization one; 5) the individual author’s specificity of artistic perception and reality coloristic visualization was revealed; among the significant color individual features are multicolor effect, non-stereotyped color characteristics, color associativity. The results obtained make it possible to create a comprehensive description of the story’s color conceptosphere.

Балтера, установлены параллели с цветовой манерой письма К.Г. Паустовского, во многом предопределившего творческий путь Б.И. Балтера. In the article on the material of Boris Balter’s story a significant fragment of the writer’s coloristic picture of the world was reconstructed: the color range that he used to visualize the most important text spaces was revealed, the color dominants were established, their functional potential was described, as well as Balter’s specifics of color painting; some parallels with K. Paustovsky’s color style of writing were established too.

Introduction. Color terms constitute a most archaic lexical stratum of any language. Being characterized by vivid ethnocultural specifics, those serve as important elements to the linguistic view of the world. Goals. The paper seeks to analyze semantic features of the Kalmyk color term улан ‘red’ and its German translation equivalents. Materials and Methods. The work explores Kalmyk folktales recorded by the Finnish scholar G. J. Ramstedt during his 1903 scientific expedition to the Kalmyk Steppe. The analysis of the color term comprises both general research methods and specifically linguoculturological ones, such as linguoculturological and conceptual insights into folklore texts. Results. Impacts of color in world perception of the Kalmyks — just as for any other nation — are diverse enough. The folktale texts recorded by G. J. Ramstedt contain a total of five shades of the color, the lexeme улан ‘red’ being largely characterized by positive semantics. German translation variants are not always complete semantic equivalents of the color term which results from that color denoting lexemes — and those of red in particular — are integral to a certain ethnic worldview, this leading to some ambivalence of the color under study. Conclusions. The lexeme улан ‘red’ in its first nominative meaning denotes a color of an object, e.g., red proper, scarlet, ruddy, etc. In the Kalmyk language, it also serves to denote the prototypic color of blood and is often used to describe animal coat colors. The Finnish scholar employed different German translation means. In most cases, the selection of translation equivalents depends on the translator’s associative/visual thinking and perception of the world, as well as on lexical, semantic and morphological patterns of Kalmyk and German. Folklore texts are structured specifically, and a translator needs utmost attention and linguistic intuition to avoid any inaccuracies when communicating a color paradigm from the original text. The challenge be tackled by a translator of color terms in a folklore text is that he/she is supposed to bear both the linguocultures examined.

Can accessible and clear writing styles unlock the power of feminist theory? Can clearly articulated ideas change the world? Some academic feminists think so. They feel that feminist theory should be measured against its ability to contribute to social change. Anything less and their work would look merely academic. Patti Lather's work, judging by her recent article, "Troubling Clarity: The Politics of Accessible Language" (Fall 1996), has been criticized by other feminists precisely because her desire to appeal to intramural readers appears to overshadow her commitment to extramural change. Gaby Weiner (1993), for example, implies that Lather's use of dense prose denies equal access to the interesting ideas that her complicated style of writing contains. Weiner assumes, as do other feminists, that feminist theory in education should be written in a clear and accessible way so that it can reach beyond the classroom to edify the world. Lather responds to this call for clarity by defending her complex writing style and her desire "to be heard," as she writes, "in the halls of High Theory." She justifies her position by pointing out that academic feminists "can't do everything and that the struggle demands contestation on every front" (p. 526).

The article is devoted to the functional potential of international law as an ideological form of law in overcoming the problems associated with migration processes. Currently, migration is an unavoidable objective (and generally positive) phenomenon. However, it gives rise to a number of problems, among which the main problem is the problem of intercultural interaction and the integration of migrants in the recipient society. This process is often a painful process for both the migrant and his new social environment. It is the problem of social integration that often gives rise to the problem of a conflict between the migrant’s legal consciousness and the external legal requirements of a politically organized society. Using the socio-axiological approach, the author considers the conventional mechanism for synthesizing legal values, which are understood as a kind of super cultural meta-values, and comes to the conclusion that many of them are being formed today at the supranational — international level. The author comes to the conclusion that it is in the space of international legal discourse in the framework of international law as a special ideological form of law that basic, minimal, and therefore universal legal values can be formed. These values, as international law develops as an ideological form of law and its influence on national and international integration legal systems grows, people around the world can rely on in developing strategies of behavior, regardless of their habitat. In this, the author sees the solution to a number of important problems related to intercultural interaction, which is caused by the activation of migration processes in the modern world.

Colors, color terms and color symbolism are determined by a multitude of linguistic and cultural contacts in various spheres of social, political and cultural aspects of life in various geopolitical dimensions. They are of a great interest to scholars studying linguistic processes in the multilingual space. In the recent decades the mental modus operandi has shifted towards the visual aspect, precoding texts into images. This process has had a great influence on interlinguistic contacts; it is represented in the new reality through various semiotic devices, among which are the color components. The research rationale is motivated by the fact that images of total socialization lead to a multidirectional cognition of colors and color code transformation. Researching these processes through the lens of color studies reveals the multitude of ways of linguistic experience objectification and the impact it has on mentality. Due to the relevance of the problem, the authors aim to study the potential of cultural and cognitive information contained by color terms in various languages by addressing cultural codes of the new language reality in the multidimensional linguistic space. Color is an important component of culture and the realization of moral and aesthetic values; it is surrounded by a system of associations created by the objective material world and various cultural factors that are widely represented in the modern linguistic practice, which determines the relevance of comparative studies. This scientific approach facilitates a comprehensive description of connections between colors and tokens in different languages, as well as the practical value of color terms and their multidimensionality.

In the work, on extensive factual material of the works included in K.G. Paustovsky’s Collected Works, on the example of the lexeme forest functioning, correlating with a wide range of attributes and predicates, a significant fragment of K.G. Paustovsky’s language picture of the world is reconstructed. Considering the importance of the coloristic component for the writer’s worldview, it seems appropriate to identify the specifics of the forest individual author’s color per-ception and visualization. Key findings: 1) the coloristic spectrum used by the writer to visualize the forest is established; 2) the dominants of this spectrum are identified; 3) the functional poten-tial of the color terms is identified; 4) the determinism of the forest coloristic characteristics is de-termined; 5) the correlation of national and individual author’s in color visualization of the forest is established; 6) the specifics of the author’s color style of writing is described, all this in complex contribute to holistic reconstruction of the writer’s coloristic picture of the world. The theoretical basis of the study are the key provisions of linguistics of color, the methodological basis – a set of methods used at different stages of work, including the continuous sampling method, descriptive-analytical, contextual, and quantitative data processing.

The phenomenon of rubber consumption in Malaysia has been increased parallel with the world demand. Hence, it is necessary for the cultivators to gain some knowledge for differentiating various rubber tree clone breed which may give them high latex yield after 5 years or more of planting. This paper discusses the identification of several rubber tree clones breed based on the best percentage of the reflectance wavelength obtained from the respected latex. In this work, there were three selected rubber tree clones which are RRIM 2025, PB 355 and PB 350 suggested by Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia (RRIM) will undergo a preliminary analysis on the significant information of spectrum properties acquired from the latex. A hundred of latex samples have been collected from each clone and extracted the optical measurements of the primary color spectrum (Red, Green and Blue) using spectrometer. The next step is to analyze the acquired information based on its reflectance wavelength with respect to clones and at the end it will be evaluated statistically. As a result, there were two out of three clones could be discriminated between each other with refer to the green wavelength (573nm).
