Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis dan cara pemanfaatan tanaman obat yang dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan obat-obatan tradisional oleh masyarakat di Desa Budi Mukti Sulawesi Tengah dan pengembangannya sebagai media pembelajaran. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode survei dimana sampel diambil secara acak. Analisis pemanfaatan tanaman sebagai obat dilakukan dengan wawancara secara terbuka dengan masyarakat di sekitar lokasi penelitian. Hasil penelitian diperoleh 36 species tanaman yang berkhasiat obat, tergolong dari 29 familia yaitu: Cordyline fruticosa L. (andong), Pluchea indica L. (beluntas), Cocos nucifera L. (kelapa), Andrographis paniculata Ness. (sambiloto), Annona muricata L. (sirsak), Amaranthus hybridus L. (bayam), Apium graveolens L. (seledri), Ipomea reptans L. (kangkung), Ipmoea batatas L. (ubi jalar), Mamordica charantia L. (pare), Carica papaya L. (pepaya), Euphorbia tirucalli L. (petikan kebo), Orthosiphoon staminues Benth. (kumis kucing), Persea Americana Mill. (alpukat), Michelia alba (cempaka putih), Hibiscus rosasinensis L. (kembang sepatu), Cyclea barbata Miers. (cincau), Leucaena leucocephala L. (lantoro), Moringa oleifera (kelor), Psidium guajava L. (jambu biji), Syzygium aromaticum L. (cengkeh), Averrhoa bilimbi L. (belimbing wuluh), Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb. (pandan wangi), Cymbopogon citratus L. (sere), Imperata cylindrical L. (alang-alang), Piper betle L. (daun sirih), Morinda citriffolia L. (mengkudu), Citrus aurantifolia L. (jeruk nipis), Manilkara kauki L. (sawo), Physalis angulate (ciplukan), Aloe vera L. (lidah buaya), Zingiber officinale Rosc. (jahe), Cucurma xanthorrhiza Roxb. (temulawak), Curcuma domestica Val. (kunyit), Zingiber purpureum Roxb. (bangle), dan Kaempferia galangal L. (kencur). Bagian tumbuhan yang dimanfaatkan untuk pengobatan antara lain; akar, batang, daun, bunga, buah, biji, kulit batang dan seluruh bagian tumbuhan dengan cara penggunaan yang berbeda-beda. Penelitian ini menghasilkan produk berupa buku saku sebagai media pembelajaran Biologi.

Aims: This work aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of 14 alcoholic extracts of medicinal plants on the mycelial growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae, Fusarium solani and Rhizoctonia solani. Those are fungi that cause diseases in Passiflora edulis. Study Design: With the obtained data the mycelial growth rate index (MGRI) was calculated, afterwards the analysis of variance was performed and the means were compared by the Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. Place and Duration of Study: Plant Pathology Laboratory, Embrapa Eastern Amazon, Belém, Pará, Brazil, between May 2014 and April 2015. Methodology: The extracts were prepared with 1.0 g of powdered plant material and 10 mL of commercial ethyl alcohol 92.8º (0.1 g mL-1) under constant agitation in an orbital shaker at 200 rpm for 20 minutes. They were then kept in the refrigerator for 24 hours at rest. The extracts were centrifuged and filtered on Millipore membranes with 0.22 µm porosity. The tests with the phytopathogenic fungi were carried out in vitro with the alcoholic extracts at 1% concentration. The experimental design was completely randomized with 15 treatments and 5 replicates. Results: All the extracts reduced the growth of the fungi C. gloeosporioides. The extracts the Eucalyptus angulosa, Lippia alba, Zingiber officinale, Cymbopagon citratus, Azadirachta indica, Plectranthus barbathus, Hibiscus sabdariffa, Aloe vera, Pedilanthus tithymaloides, Mansoa alliacea and Chenopodium ambrosioides reduced the mycelial growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae. Only the extract of E. angulosa presented reduction in the growth of F. solani. Meanwhile the extracts of E. angulosa, Z. officinale, L. alba, M. alliacea and P. barbathus reduced the mycelial growth of R. solani. Conclusion: All extracts presented antimicrobial potential, being that the extract of E. angulosa reduced the mycelial growth of all the evaluated fungi.

Edible films are thin layers made from hydrocolloids, lipids, and their combinations, functioning as a barrier to mass transfer. The hydrocolloid source that commonly used for the edible film is starch. Lesser yam has the potential to be developed into food packaging products. It has a high starch yield (21.4%). The starch properties, which usually obstruct the edible film production are not resistant to high temperature, it produces a starch suspension with viscosity and ability to form a gel is not uniform, cannot stand in acidic conditions, does not resist stirring, limited solubility in water, and starch gel is easy to syneresis and brittle. This study aimed to investigate the effect of glycerol and Aloe vera concentration on the physical and mechanical edible film. Randomized complete block design (RCBD) factorial with two factors was adopted. The first factor was Aloe vera concentration (0, 1%, 0.2% and 0.3% b / v), and the second factor wasglycerol concentration (17.5, 22.5 and 27.5% v/b). The parameters tested included thickness, tensile strength, elongation, solubility, transparency, and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). The results showed an interaction between the addition of glycerol and Aloe vera to thickness, tensile strength, solubility, transparency, and WVTR. The best characteristics of edible film were produced by the addition of glycerol 17.5% and Aloe vera0.1% with the thickness (0.11 mm), tensile strength (2.03 MPa), elongation (15.38%), solubility (64.44%), transparency (2.88 mm-1), and WVTR (13.27 g m-2 24 h-1).

Free radicals include both Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS).When free radicals are produced in a regulated manner in a healthy human body it is scavenged efficiently by antioxidant defense system. But excess generation of pro-oxidants by continuous chain reaction in the form of ROS and RNS cause several human diseases. The shift of the balance in the favour of pro-oxidants results in a condition called “oxidative stress”. Alcohol is primarily metabolized in the liver to generate ROS and RNS, leading to diseases such as cirrhosis, fatty liver and chronic hepatitis. Alcohol induced damage is associated with oxidative stress. The excess generation of prooxidants and reduced antioxidant levels provide an effective model of Hepatotoxicity which is noteworthy. Recent trend is to discover polyherbal formulation of medicinal plants which have hepatoprotective function. In the present study 80% alcoholic extract of leaves of Aloe vera, Bacopa monniera, Moringa oleifera and rhizome of Zingiber officinale were utilized to prepare Herbal Preparation or HP-4.Further the hepatoprotective effects of HP-4 was tested in alcohol induced Hepatotoxicity in mice. Silymarin is a well known hepatoprotective drug was used as a standard for comparison. Biochemical and histopathological studies provided ample evidence that HP-4 provided a hepatoprotective role in alcohol induced hepatotoxicity which was comparable to drug Silymarin. The presence of phytochemicals in HP-4 provided a synergistic, supra-additive and co-operative effects in the hepatoprotective function in alcohol induced hepatotoxicity mice model. Present study was performed to evaluate the anti-termitic potential of four common plant species of Zingiber officinale, Raphanus sativus, Rosa indica and Aloe vera. During laboratory bioassay, the biological activity of ethanolic extracts of these plants was evaluated. The ethanol extract of Z. officinale caused highest mortality (100%) while least mortality (68%) was observed in R. indica extract. The LT50 for Z. officinale were 24.34, 40.40 and 64.7 h for concentrations of 10%, 5% and 3% respectively. Present findings suggested that these plant extracts can provide environmental friendly management of H. indicola.  In A. vera, also resulted in significant mortality against H. indicola i.e. 94%, 64% and 44% on exposure of 10%, 5% and 3% concentraions. While LT50 were 34.66, 65.59, and 100.1 hours against 10%, 5% and 3% concentrations. In R. sativus, mortality of H. indicola was 76%, 50% and 30% while LT50 against were 59.10, 86.20, and 127.3 h, against concentration of 10%, 5% and 3%. Least mortality was observed in R. indica i.e. 68%, 44% and 30% while LT50 were 64.17, 94.58 and 125.5 h at 10%, 5% and 3% respectively. This study revealed that the extracts of Z. officinale, A.vera and R. Sativus have a potential to be used for termite control especially Heterotermes indicola to minimize the damage. Theobroma cacao is the main raw material to produce chocolate, as well as for use in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. However, Moniliophthora roreri is one of the most destructive fungal diseases and the main limiting of cacao production worldwide. Thus, this work aimed to assess the inhibitory effect of extracts of Zingiber officinale (T1) and Aloe vera (T2), and Trichoderma harzianum + Bacillus subtillis. (T3) on Moniliophthora roreri infection in Theobroma cacao; in addition, a control (T4) was also evaluated. Each treatment was applied to six plants of cacao. Incidence of monilia infection and fruit weight were monitored every 15 days (in total four periods) after the application of the treatment by spray. Significant differences (P<0.05) were found among treatments for incidence. It was observed that spraying entire cacao trees after two times (approximately 30 days) showed a reduction of monilia infection. After all periods, T1, T2, and T3 showed an incidence of monilia infection by 20.5, 17.7, and 14.9% respectively, compared to cultural control of 41.1%. This reduction of moniliasis infection translates into an increase in fruit weight average for T3 (8.4 kg), T2 (7.3 kg), and T1 (6.9 kg). In contrast, in the control (T3), the fruit weight average decreased by 5.3 kg. Biological control showed efficient management of pathogens as M. roreri. It is recommended to use such antifungal (Aloe vera) spray over at least 120 days which would decrease infection incidence even more.
