The research deals with translation shift in Garfield takes his licks a bilingual text. The objectives of the study were: (1) to find out the types of shifts in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, (2) to describe how the shifts occur in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, (3) to analyze the reasons why translation shifts occur in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were words, phrases, and clauses were translated from English into Indonesian. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) The category shifts in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text are 1) structure shift, 2) class shift, 3) unit shift, 4) intra system shift, and 5) double types of shift. (2) There were some ways of translation shift used in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, namely grammatical change occurred, change in different word class, change in ranks and change in number. (3) There were four reasons of using translation shifts are (1) Different language systems, (2) Grammatical structures of SL do not exist in TL, (3) Literal translation is grammatically possible but may not accord with natural usage in the TL (naturalness between SL and TL) and (4) replacing virtual gap by grammatical structure.Keywords: Structure Shift, Class Shift, Unit Shift, Intra System Shift.

The research deals with the occurrence of shift in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia. The objectives of the study were: (1) to find out the types of shifts in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia, (2) to describe how the shifts occur in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia, (3) to analyze the reasons why translation shifts occur Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were clauses which translated from Gayonese into Indonesian. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model.  This research was found that there were five types of translation shift. The type of structure shift was the dominant type. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) The category shifts in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia are 1) structure shift, 2) class shift, 3) unit shift, 4) reduplication word shift, and 5) double types of shift. (2) There were some ways of translation shift used in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia, namely grammatical change occurred, change in different word class and change in ranks. This study entails the translation of scientific terms from English into Indonesian. The objectives of this study are to investigate the problem of non-equivalence at word level found in mathematics bilingual textbook and to investigate the translation strategies used. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were 89 words and phrases containing scientific terms. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. The finding of this study revealed that there were five problems of non-equivalence at scientific terms found in mathematics bilingual textbook. They were the source language concept is not lexicalized in the target language, the source language word is semantically complex, the source and target language make distinction in meaning, the target language lacks hyponym,  and difference in form. To solve the problems of non equivalence, it was found that four translation strategies proposed by Baker were applicable.

Writing skill is one of the skills that is difficult to learn because we have to know the correct sentence composition and also what we hear must be in accordance with what we write and therefore this skill is very important to learn. The objective of the research is to identify the sudents’ responses toward think talk write (TTW) strategy in teacihng writing skill. The research used descriptive qualitative design. The respondents of this research were eighth grade students of SMP Pasundan 1 Cimahi. The instrument of this research was questionnaire. The result of data analysis shows that students gave positive responses toward TTW strategy. The respondents agree that TTW strategy can increase students’ motivation, TTW Strategy can help students in improving their writing skill and TTW strategy can make teaching and learning process interesting. Keywords:  Writing, Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy, Student’s Responses

AbstractThis article analyzed words in Minangkabaunese that share the same semantic prime: TOUCH using Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM). This research was conducted using the descriptive qualitative approach. The data that were found in this research were the words connected that are connected to the semantic prime TOUCH in Minangkabau language. The sources of this data were the 11 informants from the 11 districts in Padang city, which is the capital city of the West Sumatera Province. The data were collected using interview guidelines, recording equipment, and writing equipment. An interactive model of data analysis is used to analyze the data. From the data that were collected and analyzed there are a total of 6 words that are connected to semantic prime TOUCH: maawai, manggaduah, maambiak, marabuik, marameh, and maresek. These words are similar but not exactly synonymous that they will create a misconception in diction.

The field of meaning and components is one of the bases for understanding the meaning of a language. And this theory helps researchers uncover the meaning of the verb 'to purify' in Arabic. The verb 'to purify' was chosen because it has an essential meaning for Muslims. Even the Qur'an uses various lexemes for this verb by looking at its context, subject, and function because different lexemes carry different meanings and legal implications. Therefore, this study aims to describe the meaning field, analyze the meaning component, and explain the verbum component of the verb 'to purify' in Arabic. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected from the Qur'an, with selective reading and note-taking techniques. The data analysis technique uses an interactive model by Miles and Huberman, namely by collecting data from sources and sorting it then selecting it to produce findings of four purifying verbs, namely طَهَّرَ، قَدَّسَ، زَكَّى،, and سَبَّحَ. The following components of meaning are determined through the type of subject, object, characteristics of the object, and how it works and concluded that the verb 'to purify' is included in the category of state verb and process verb. The objectives of this study are to describe the types of speech acts used in Jokowi’s campaign speeches, to elaborate the realization of Jokowi used illocutionary act in campaign speeches, to know the reason of using illocutionary act. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative research. The data of the research are the utterances of Jokowi’s speeches. The source of the data was Jokowi’s campaign speeches. The technique for collecting data is documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model by using Miles and Huberman. The findings show all types of speech acts were used in Jokowi’s campaign speeches, namely:  locutionary act, illocutionary act can be classified into five parts; there were assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, declarative and the last types was perlocutionary act. The realization of illocutionary act used in Jokowi’s campaign speeches, the directive speech act was used in form of warning, commanding, promising, offering, questioning, requesting. The reasons of using illocutionary act in Jokowi’s campaign speeches are to point out or to identify what the speaker mean from his utterance, which influence of meaning and information of the speech and to get information clearly from Jokowi’s campaign speeches.   Keywords: speech acts, campaign, campaign speeches

This research aims to investigate the types of conjunctions and the accurately use of conjunction in students’ writing. This research was conducted in SMAN 1 Tongkuno. The instrument of this research was students’ writing that focused on recount text. This research employed descriptive qualitative design. The population of this research was the second-grade students of SMAN 1 Tongkuno. The sample of this  research  is  the  second-grade  students of SMA N 1 Tongkuno consist of 20 students. The researcher collected the data by asking the students to write their personal recount. The technique of data analysis in this study was descriptive analysis, while to analyze the accuracy of conjunction the researcher used criteria of correctness in cohesion that consist of the use of conjunction on students’ writing. The result shows that all of types of conjunction exist in students writing, additive conjunction is the most frequently conjunction used in students’ writing, followed by temporal conjunction, then causal conjunction, and the last adversative conjunction. The accuracy of conjunction used by students on their writing contribute highly because mostly the second-grade students of SMAN 1 Tongkuno use conjunction accurately. Keywords: Conjunction, Recount Text, Writing

The purpose of this study was to analyze the multicultural attitudes of students at SD 1 Rahtawu. This research is a descriptive qualitative research aproach. The subjects of this study were 3 students from grade 4 and 4 students from grade 6. The instruments used in this study were interviews, observations, and incidental notes. The validity of the data used source triangulation, technical triangulation and time triangulation. Data analysis uses an interactive model according to Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that students' multicultural attitudes include tolerance, respect for opinions, being open, having knowledge about the diversity of Rahtawu Village and having an attitude of interdependence with each other. This attitude is shown by most of the students at SD 1 Rahtawu. The habit of students living side by side with their friends who have different religious and cultural backgrounds makes students understand and understand the importance of loving cultural and religious diversity, especially in the school environment.

This study was aimed at examining the violations of conversational maxim in Satu Indonesia talk show. The objectives of this study were to examine the types of conversational maxim violations occurred in the talk show, to examine the realization of conversational maxim violations, and to elaborate the reasons. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was Satu Indonesia talk show. There were 44 episodes of Satu Indonesia talk show in 2014 which were consisted of 14 politics, 15 economics, and 15 socials. Then, the utterances of host and guests in 3 episodes of politics, 3 episodes of economics and 3 episodes of social were the data of this study. The technique of data collection was documentary technique and the instrument of data collection was recorder. The technique of data analysis was interactive model by Miles and Huberman. The findings showed that all conversational maxim violations. Quality maxim was dominantly violated in topic of politics; quantity maxim violation was dominantly violated in the topic of economics and social. Realizations of conversational maxim violations were realized through understatement, overstatement, contradiction, sarcasm, metaphor, associative clues, presupposition, personification, synecdoche, and analogy.   Key Words: Conversational Maxim, Maxim Violations, Talk Show

<p>This research deals with the use Positive Politeness in “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” Movie. To do the research, the writer formulates the problem as follow: (1) What Positive Politeness strategies are used in “Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince” Movie? 2. What is the most dominant strategy of Positive Politeness Used in “Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince” Movie? This study is focused on Brown and Levinson (1987) positive politeness theory by using fifteen strategies of positive politeness. The objective of the study are to describe and determine the positive politeness used in that movie. The data are obtained from all the dialogues in that movie. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The subject of this study is “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” movie, and the objects are the fifteen strategies of positive politeness. The techniques of collecting data are by watching movie, identifying and transcribing the script of the dialogues then put them into columns. The data is analyzed by identifying and transcribing the script of the dialogues, classifying the positive politeness strategies used in that movie then counting it and find out the dominant positive politeness strategy. The findings of the data analysis show that there are thirteen of fifteen strategies of positive politeness found in the movie each with the number and percentage of occurrences.
