Mathematical literacy is the capacity of individuals to formulate, use, and interpret mathematics in various contexts. Students’ mathematical literacy skills can be seen in the way students work in solving PISA questions. This study is qualitative descriptive research. Data from the analysis of students’ mathematical literacy skills were obtained through tests in the form of descriptive questions adopted from PISA questions, analysis based on indicators of mathematical literacy skill according to PISA, and the interview results with students who worked on the PISA questions. This study shows that students’ mathematical literacy skills were in the medium to the low category; this can be seen from the percentage of students’ answer scores in working on PISA questions. This study attempts to investigate thanking strategies used by Indonesian EFL learners based on contextual factors i.e. social status and social distance. The participants were 50 semester three students studying English for Business at a state polytechnic in Bandung. The participants were both male and female, aging from 19-20 years old. Data were collected via a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) adopted from Cheng (2005) and analyzed using thanking strategy taxonomy proposed by the same author. The DCT consisted of ten different scenarios describing the most common situations that students may encounter in their college life. The results of this study indicated that the most preferred thanking strategies used by Indonesian EFL learners were thanking, alerters (i.e., title) and positive feelings.  In terms of social status and social distance, the findings revealed that thanking and apology strategies were the most used strategies in equal-status with low-familiarity situations.  In situations within which learners shared equal-status with high-familiarity, the most strategies employed were thanking and positive feelings. Regarding thanking strategies used in low-status with low-familiarity situations, thanking and repayment strategies seemed to be the most preferred ones.  Keywords: thanking, strategies, social status, social distance

The popular image of metalworking sites in desert settings envisages armies of slaves engaged in back-breaking labour. This is in conflict with ethnographic evidence indicating that skilled specialist metalworkers are often accorded high social status. This study approaches that contradiction directly by studying the remains of domesticated food animals from domestic and industrial contexts at Timna in southern Israel. The authors demonstrate that the higher-value meat cuts come from industrial contexts, where they were associated with the specialist metalworkers, rather than the ‘domestic’ contexts occupied by lower status workers engaged in support roles. It is suggested that the pattern documented here could also have been a feature of early metalworking sites in other times and places.

Samuel taylor coleridge’s the ancient mariner and kubla khan are the major poems regarded as the greatest compositions in the field of supernaturalism. As a poet of supernaturalism, coleridge strictly eschewed crudeness from his writings. Based on the purpose of this study, that is to seek supernaturalism in samuel taylor coleridge’s major poems, the research design of this study is conducted by applying content analysis as proposed by koul (1984). Content analysis is concerned with the phenomenon, elements and comparison. Because of its concern, content analysis is sometimes referred to as ‘documentary activity’ or ‘information analysis’. The data of this study belong to the non –manipulated variables as they are not the result of experiment; these are called the qualitative type. Therefore, the data analyzed with the qualitative descriptive approach. This research will show the nature of the situation as it exists at the time of the study as stated by gay (1987: 189), “descriptive research determines and reports the way the things are”. Dream, suggestiveness and vision are the elements of the supernaturalism in these poems which are presented in the research result.

Kauman village becomes a symbol of the Javanese philosophy and the Islamic ideology on which the local society orient their faith. This research aims to find the residential transformation factors and form in Kauman village in Yogyakarta and the characteristic of each object to conserve Kauman village as a constituent element that defines Yogyakarta City's identity. This research method is qualitative – descriptive research using a synchronic approach to present synthetic results from each object and detailed object characteristics conducted in a certain period. All data are collected by doing observation and interviewing second parties. The discussion led to the residential spatial change as an adaptation form of Batik skipper's and Ketib's residence in Kauman village of Yogyakarta. It can be concluded that the identity of the residents as a part of a modern community is gradually more dominant than the desire to reveal their identity as a part of a traditional Javanese community. Nevertheless, Batik skipper's residences retain Javanese architecture and Indische architecture characteristics as a symbol of the social status of the Batik Skipper and Ketib; The space for religious activities is no longer available in Batik skipper's residence. On the contrary, it is available in Ketib's home, where the residents still retain the function of langgar, which is located in the highest privacy zone.

The dialogues used by the male and female main character in the movie "Imperfect: Karier, Cinta & Timbangan" has many different language characteristics. This research aims to elaborate the expression of language characteristics of main male and female characters in the movie based on Qi Pan's theory and define the socio-cultural factors behind using these language characteristics. This research was qualitative descriptive research. The data source was the movie’s script of "Imperfect: Karier, Cinta & Timbangan." To collect data, the researcher used watching, listening, and writing techniques. Then, the data were analyzed using the textual analysis method. The results revealed that (a) the main female character uses 11 language characteristics according to Qi Pan's theory in dialogue. In contrast, the main male character does not use these language characteristics. Only hypercorrection characteristics are not used in both speeches, and (b) language differences in characters' speeches are influenced by socio-cultural factors that shape their personalities in the movie, creating gender stereotypes that appear in both genders based on their characters. This research represents an expression and relevance between language and gender, which can be found in real life and literary works, one of which is elaborated through Indonesian movie media.
