This study examines the role of emotional regulation and five trait personality towards burnout. Personality consists of five types, namely openness, agreeableness, extraversion, conscientiousness and neuroticism. Emotional regulation consists of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. Burnout consists of emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. The subjects were riot police officers from Jakarta Regional Police. The sampling methods used were purposive sampling and convenience sampling. The respondents in this study were 79 men. This study found that emotional regulation and five trait personality contribute as much as 70.9% towards the burnout ofJakarta Regional Police riot police officers. Members of riot police who experience burnout tend to show low emotional regulation and high neuroticism.

This study aimed to longitudinally analyze the role played by two emotional regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression), through the mediating effect of engagement in pleasant activities during lockdown, in changes in affective and cognitive happiness in comparison with pre-pandemic levels. Eighty-eight participants from a community sample were evaluated at two timepoints. At timepoint 1 (before the COVID-19 pandemic), participants were evaluated on emotional regulation and cognitive and affective happiness. At timepoint 2 (during the COVID-19 lockdown), participants were evaluated on cognitive and affective happiness and the frequency with which they engaged in pleasant activities. We found an optimal fit of the proposed model in which cognitive reappraisal was significantly related to engagement in more pleasant activities during the lockdown. In turn, these pleasant activities were related to more affective happiness during the lockdown (compared with pre-pandemic levels), and this affective happiness was associated with greater cognitive happiness. In conclusion, cognitive reappraisal was a protective factor for affective and cognitive happiness through the mediating role of engagement in pleasant activities during lockdown. Limitations and future lines of investigation are discussed.

This study evaluated the relation between driving cognitions (i.e. panic, accidents, and social related cognitions) and driving phobia (driving fear and driving avoidance). We also investigated the moderating role of emotional regulation strategies (i.e. expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal) in the relation between driving cognitions and driving phobia. A sample of 1401 drivers took part in this study (51.8 % men, Mage = 34.76, SD = 11.76). The participants completed scales measuring driving cognitions, emotional regulation strategies, and driving phobia, as well as demographic information. The results showed that driving cognitions are positively associated with driving fear and driving avoidance. Further, our results revealed positive relations between expressive suppression and driving fear, as well as between cognitive reappraisal and driving avoidance. Moreover, driving related cognitions interacted with emotional regulation strategies in predicting driving fear. The implications of these results for interventions and future research are discussed.

AbstractA better understanding of emotion regulation (ER) within daily life is a growing focus of research. This study evaluated the average use of two ER strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) and concurrent and lagged relationships between these two ER strategies and affect (positive and negative affect) in the daily lives of adolescents. We also investigated the role of the same strategies at the trait level on these within-person relationships. Thirty-three adolescents provided 1,258 reports of their daily life by using the Experience Sampling Method for one week. Regarding the relative use of ER strategies, cognitive reappraisal (M = 2.87, SD = 1.58) was used more often than expressive suppression (M = 2.42, SD = 1.21). While the use of both strategies was positively correlated when evaluated in daily life (p = .01), the same did not occur at the trait level (p = .37). Multilevel analysis found that ER strategies were concurrently related to affect (p < .01), with the exception of cognitive reappraisal-positive affect relationship (p = .11). However, cognitive reappraisal predicted higher positive affect at the subsequent sampling moment ( β = 0.07, p = .03). The concurrent associations between cognitive reappraisal and negative affect vary as function of the use of this strategy at the trait level (β = 0.05, p = .02). Our findings highlighted the complex associations between daily ER strategies and affect of a normative sample of adolescents.

Background Hospital nurses’ experience of their profession differs from that of community clinic nurses due to different working conditions and settings. Purpose To compare hospital nurses and community clinic nurses as to the mediating role of burnout on motivation and empathy. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 457 nurses completed four questionnaires: Demographic, Motivation Questionnaire, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire. Results Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization among hospital nurses were significantly higher than among community nurses. No significant differences were found in personal accomplishment, empathy, and motivation between the groups. Empathy and motivation were more strongly correlated among hospital nurses than among community nurses. Burnout was found to be a significant mediator between empathy and motivation in both groups but in each group by different burnout subscales. Conclusions To reduce burnout, leaders in the nursing field must enhance conditions in the hospital nurses’ work environment to lower levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization; community nurses should be guided to improve their attitudes toward their on-the-job performance to promote their personal accomplishment. Understanding the differences could direct policy makers’ desire toward enacting policies that accommodate these differences and focus on the needs of both groups of professionals.

Jamaican police officers often encounter organizational and societal stressors through their work in high-crime and low-resource settings. Repeated exposure to stressors, with limited opportunities for support, can compromise emotional well-being and increase the risk of experiencing burnout and suicidal ideation. This cross-sectional study examines the relationship between burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment) and suicidal ideations among Jamaican police officers surveyed in 2017. Jamaican police officers ( N = 305) from five major urban divisions completed two self-report questionnaires. The results revealed significant relationships between emotional exhaustion and suicidal ideations ( r = .17, p < .01) and depersonalization and suicidal ideations ( r = .18, p < .01). However, there was no significant relationship between personal accomplishment and suicidal ideations ( p > .01). Implementing programmes that offer access to adaptive coping or stress management skills and social support systems may reduce burnout and decrease risk for suicidal ideation.

A santri is a person who studies Islam in a pesantren or Islamic boarding school. In carrying out their daily activities, students are bound by a variety of regulations and activities that tend to cause emotional exhaustion in students. In this research, the role of self-regulated learning on emotional exhaustion mediated by student engagement on santri will be discussed. The research method used is quantitative non-experimental technique with purposive sampling and criterion sampling. The measuring device used consists of a self-regulated learning measuring instrument adapted from a self-regulated learning measuring instrument from Pintrich and Groot (1990), an emotional exhaustion measuring instrument adapted from a measuring instrument developed by Schaufeli, Martίnez, Marqués-Pinto, Salanova, and Bakker (2002), as well as student engagement measurement instrument adapted from the student engagement measurement instrument from Schaufeli and Bakker (2003). Data were collected at five Islamic boarding schools in Bogor and Bekasi over October - November 2018 involving 424 research participants aged 11-20 years. Based on the results obtained, self-regulated learning negatively and significantly affects emotional exhaustion (tc '= -6.336; p = 0.000 <0.05) and student engagement does not mediate the role of self-regulated learning on emotional exhaustion (tb' = 1.153; p = 0,250> 0,05).

Purpose Using equity theory, this study aims to examine the role of customer incivility in effecting service sabotage among hotel employees by recognizing the mediating role of revenge motivation and the moderating effect of emotion regulation. Design/methodology/approach A multi-wave, multi-source questionnaire survey was conducted with 291 employee–supervisor dyads at chain hotels in Shenzhen, China. Previously developed and validated measures for customer incivility, revenge motivation, emotion regulation and service sabotage were adopted to test the hypotheses. Findings Customer incivility increased employees’ revenge motivation and service sabotage. Emotion regulation acted as a boundary condition for customer incivility’s direct effect on revenge motivation and its indirect effect on service sabotage through revenge motivation. Cognitive reappraisal mitigated the detrimental influence of customer incivility, whereas expressive suppression worsened its adverse effects. Practical implications Managers should monitor and deter the emergence of uncivil behaviors, provide psychological support for employees experiencing customer incivility and encourage these employees to use cognitive reappraisal rather than expressive suppression as an emotion regulation strategy. Originality/value To the authors’ knowledge, no prior research has investigated the customer incivility–service sabotage relationship in the hotel industry. This study sheds light on how customer incivility can motivate service sabotage among hotel employees. Furthermore, the authors used equity theory rather than the commonly adopted resources perspective to offer new insights into the customer incivility–service sabotage relationship.

Research on the effects of cultural diversity on individual team member performance has typically assumed a linear relationship, but has yielded mixed findings. In the study, we address these inconsistencies by hypothesizing an optimal (mid-range) level of diversity that maximizes performance. Given the potential for negative emotions to arise within a diverse team, we also hypothesize that team members who employ emotional self-regulation strategies will demonstrate stronger performance. We adopt an individual-level perspective, assessing diversity as the cultural dissimilarity between each individual and their teammates. Using a sample of 103 postgraduate students (23 teams with 3–6 participants in each), we found evidence of a curvilinear relationship between cultural dissimilarity and individual team member performance. Contrary to our expectations, we found that individual performance is greatest at very low and very high levels of dissimilarity. In terms of emotional regulation strategies, we found that cognitive reappraisal was associated with higher performance, but there was no evidence for the effects of expressive suppression. Together, the present findings challenge the assumption that the diversity-performance relationship is linear. Our findings also indicate individual performance in culturally diverse teams is influenced by individuals’ use of cognitive reappraisal to regulate negative emotions.

AbstractOne of the professions that has a high risk, stress and burnout rate is the police. To find out the extent of police officers against the impact of burnout, we need a valid and reliable measurement tool. This research seeks to test the construct validity of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human-Services Survey (MBI-HSS). The data used are data obtained from 504 police officers serving in the Metro Jaya Regional Police (Polda Metro Jaya); age between 21 and 56 years old (M = 33.04, SD = 8.533); male sex (99.8%) and female (0.2%); and length of work from 3–38 years (M = 15.04, SD = 8.533). The analytical method used is Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) using Mplus 7.11. The test results prove that the data fit with the 3-correlated factor model that shows the correlation of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization factors = 0.966, emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment = -0.590 and personal accomplishment and depersonalization =  -0.701, with RMSEA = 0.048, CFI = 0.943 and TLI = 0.934, indicating good fit.AbstrakSalah satu profesi yang memiliki resiko, stress dan tingkat burnout yang tinggi adalah polisi.
