Tagline slogans are aggressively used in the marketing field to promote specific products or services to consumers. However, they are least used as authentic materials in the teaching and learning of English as a Second Language (ESL) class. The too-brief structure embodying tagline slogans makes them difficult to be exploited to be used as materials for teaching and learning processes. Studies on the use of tagline slogans in ESL speaking lessons are still scarce, making it inconclusive to fully comprehend why they are underutilized as opposed to the other authentic materials. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the reasons for such ill preference towards the employment of tagline slogans as authentic materials in speaking lessons from the view of English for occupational purposes (EOP) students. The qualitative data of this study was obtained from seven participants who had utilized tagline slogans in their class presentations. The findings show that tagline slogans are less preferable due to inappropriate words or sentence structures used, presenters’ inefficient explanation resulting in the audience’ misunderstanding and suitability issues with context. Even though there lie limitations in using tagline slogans as authentic materials, with the right selection, they could act as a platform to improve learners’ shared world knowledge in particular and their productive skills of the target language in the long run. This study has unearthed the case against the use of tagline slogans in speaking lessons from the lenses of EOP learners and at the same time has provided lessons learned on how tagline slogans could positively nurture learners’ speaking skills.

Abstract New adolescent migrants from Arabic-speaking countries face complex challenges when participating in regular mathematics classes in Germany: They have been educated in their family language(s) and are obliged to adapt to a new (second or target) language and to different styles of teaching. In contrast, 3rd generation multilingual students, who usually are schooled in German only, have rarely ever used their family languages in mathematics. This poses different challenges for the introduction of multilingual teaching and learning. By comparing German-Turkish 3rd generation students and adolescent refugees from Arabic speaking countries, both in 7th grade, this paper argues for the epistemic importance of considering “multilingual profiles” (i.e. including individual languages and history of migration) for linguistic analyses as well as for didactical designs of learning opportunities. For this purpose, a functional pragmatic discourse analysis of transcribed video-data from bilingual mathematics sessions with up to four multilingual students was conducted. This allows to characterize discursive multilingual profiles and to distinguish different perspectives on and verbalizations of mathematical concepts (in this case: fractions) in classroom discourse. Furthermore, language-specific interfaces of mental and linguistic processes are unfolded which enable new insights into conceptual understanding. The analysis focusses on the languages German, Turkish and Arabic and on 7th grade mathematics classes. The paper shows that the activation of multilingual resources in mathematics classrooms sets a promising approach for a sustainable integration of migrants, since they are enabled to use their subject-related knowledge which, in the long run, holds the potential support for the acquisition of the target language on a pre-academic level.

Culture now becomes a key element in most educational systems, particularly in Higher education, where cultural Studies are an essential part of most language instruction. The aim of this chapter is to explore the cultural challenges that hinder the process of learning English in Tunisia and to suggest solutions for overcoming these. A questionnaire was used as the primary data collection material. It was found that lack of authentic materials, lack of cultural knowledge of the target language, poor textbooks, limited exposure to authentic culture environment and native culture interference are considered to be the main problems. The results also showed that these challenges can be remedied by using more authentic materials, revising the content of textbooks, the integration of technology and cultural awareness.

Budaya merupakan salah satu tantangan utama yang ditemukan dalam menerjemahkan bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dampak indeks budaya terhadap terjemahan Novel Eclipse karya Stephenie Meyer. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dan pendekatan semiotik dalam penerjemahan. Terdapat 30 data yang diambil dari novel Eclipse dan terjemahannya dalam bahasa Indonesia dengan teknik. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) indeks budaya yang digunakan oleh penerjemah sebagai cara untuk mempertahankan budaya sumber itu sendiri memiliki dampak besar pada bahasa target. Ada beberapa terjemahan yang tidak dapat diterima dalam bahasa target karena maknanya tidak tersedia dalam bahasa Indonesia, indeks budaya lainnya diterima dalam bahasa target karena ada persamaan arti yang sesuai dengan bahasa sumber; (2) sebagai cara untuk menyelesaikan masalah dalam menerjemahkan budaya, penerjemah menggunakan prosedur transferensi dan naturalisasi. Terdapat 87% menggunakan prosedur transferensi dan 13% menggunakan naturalisasi. Simpulan umum dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa beberapa strategi penerjemahan tersebut tidak akurat di dalam bahasa sasaran sehingga penerjemah perlu mempertimbangkan pemilihan prosedur yang tepat sehingga terjemahan yang dihasilkan dapat diterima dalam bahasa sasaran. Culture is one of the main important challenges found in translating English into Indonesian language. This research aims to know the impact of cultural index on translation of Eclipse Novel by Stephenie Meyer. This research uses qualitative method and semiotic approach in translation. There are 30 data taken from Eclipse novel and its translation in Indonesian language. The results of this study show that (1) cultural index which used by translator as a way to defend the source culture and source language (henceforth SL) itself has a great impact on target language (henceforth TL). There are some translations which cannot be accepted in target language because the meaning is not available in Indonesian language, the other cultural index are accepted in TL as there are equivalence meaning that correspondence the SL; (2) as a way to solve the problem in translating culture, the translator uses transference and naturalization procedure. There are about 87% used transference procedure and 13% used naturalization. The general conclusion of this study shows that some of these strategies are not accurate in the target language so translators need to consider the selection of the right procedure so that the resulting translation can be accepted in the target language.

This study sought to examine students’ attitude towards learning of Social Studies in the Accra Metropolis of Ghana. It investigated the factors that affect students’ attitude towards Social Studies and assessed how students’ attitude towards Social Studies could be improved. A sample of 72 teachers was used. Methodologically, the study adopted the simple random sampling technique and purposive sampling technique. Questionnaire was used as the main data collection instrument. The quantitative data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. whereas the qualitative data was transcribed appropriately. It was found out that factors found to affect students’ attitude towards Social Studies include; teachers not showing interest in teaching controversial issues, teachers’ inability to give needed assistance to students, teachers’ inability to use different teaching methods in teaching Social Studies classes, inadequate teaching and learning materials and inability of Social Studies teachers to employ resource persons in times of difficulty. It is therefore recommended that Ghana Education Service should recruit professional teachers to teach Social Studies in Senior High schools. This will help the students to improve more with the right knowledge in Social Studies.

The research was carried out to analyse a legislative text as a product of translation. It is referred to Seiddel's qualitative data analysis where the data processing was performed by selecting, identification, and tabulating. (2%), compensation (1%), description (2%) discursive creation (5%) generalization (5%), literal translation (10%), modulation (8%), particularization (5%) reduction (5%) completion (4%), and dilation (14%). Meanwhile, the four categories shift are implemented as the following frequency: Intra-system shifts; 90 (52.02%), followed by Unit Shifts 46 (26.59%), Structural Shifts 24 (13.88%), and then Class Shifts 13 (7.51%). The other finding was inaccurateness. It was found that there were inaccurate translation for 5 phrases, and resulted not equivalence ones in rendering the source language into the target language.

The competency of English among future graduates has consistently been discussed and has become a national concern. The impact of not having competency in English contributes to the hindrance of communication. Thus, English language becomes a major factor graduates are not able to secure suitable employment or to perform at work. The Technical and Vocational Education Training providers such as polytechnics share the same concern as the other institutions. English courses are taught as compulsory course for all students and students are given opportunities to practise the language through co-curricular activities. Communicative English is offered in three semesters, to support the core subjects and complement the technical subjects. In leading towards development and preparing graduates to meet the needs of the future, it is pertinent to ensure that the outcome of English courses in polytechnics is to produce graduates with adequate language competency and ready for work. This chapter reveals the challenges faced by English and content lecturers based on teaching English in polytechnics, teaching the discipline content in English and the collaboration between both subject lecturers. Qualitative data is gathered based on interviews with the lecturers to discover the perception of lecturers from language and content disciplines. The challenges in teaching and learning English are analysed and recommendations for improvement are beneficial to be used as interventions to improve the teaching and learning of English in polytechnics.

The didactic technology is a necessary hybridization for the training of researchers. On the one hand, the didactic provides the validated processes for the teaching and learning process of the research based on the presence, experience and expertise of the researcher; and on the other hand, technology provides online statistical tools, programs for the analysis of qualitative data, which are the essential elements that new researchers of science should have. This article reflects on the incorporation of didactic technology as a branch of knowledge to face scientific research, whose responsibility is the generation and application of knowledge from the university environment. It concludes in the need to train researchers capable of the domain of investigative and competent to operate in any part of the world.

This article was conducted to solve the problems faced by students regarding the difficulty of understanding Arabic text in class X textbooks. And applications are offered to solve these problems with the Mutarjim dictionary application which can help and make it easier for them to access Arabic vocabulary quickly and easily. The method used is descriptive qualitative, data obtained by interviews. Then data was collected which eventually found various problems. Departing from this problem, the data is analyzed so that it finds a solution for solve it. From the research results found a solution, namely by using the Mutarjim dictionary as a tool in translating Arabic text. The steps are (1) enter text; (2) choose the base word in the vocabulary (3) read the whole equivalent in the target text; (4) looking for the right equivalent in accordance with the culture contained in the source language and target language

Background and Aim of Study: As anatomy subject is the basis of the MBBS curriculum, it’s clear understanding and knowledge is needed. Syllabus of anatomy is vast and also volatile, to summarise large amounts of facts and train students for acquisition of the skills, we believe that students learn by practice. Due to COVID-19 crisis on educational system online learning and assessment of students has become a preferable replacement of conventional in person teaching and learning. The aim of the study: to determine the perception of first year MBBS students on online self-assessment tool in anatomy, to evaluate their academic achievements during COVID-19 crisis. Material and Methods: The present study included 50 students of first year MBBS of Saveetha Medical College. Steps to conduct the aim for divided in two google forms, one contains challenging questions on the topic Lungs and Heart and other was a questionnaire to know the students’ perception on this online assessment tool. Results: It was observed that majority of the students have attempted the first google form and have also performed really well in it. 80% of the students were successful in giving the right answer for the questions given. In the second google form, which was a questionnaire, 85% of the students have found this online self-assessment to be really useful, interesting and easy way of learning. They found the questions to be challenging and help them to remember the topic in a long run. 91% of the students have liked the way of learning. Conclusions: Online self-assessment tool definitely proved to be a student friendly method of learning. This method gave them a way to learn and practice their subject topics as well as helped them in improving their perception and memory.
