The aim of this research is to examine the usefulness of Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) as an approach to develop a plan for improving the Research Methods module at the Department of Information Studies, Sultan Qaboos University. Moreover, the study examines the capacity of SSM in involving different tools for data collections including questionnaire, interviews, and document analysis for exploring the different viewpoints and needs of research participants. The results indicate that SSM greatly facilitated understanding participants’ different viewpoints regarding delivery of change. Moreover, SSM was instrumental in identifying the type and scope of the required change. The various types of conceptual models enabled accommodation of participants’ different perspectives and development of a change plan that would reflect the needs of students. The research found that SSM dealt effectively with the complexity of this situation in which different sources of information, students’ different backgrounds and perspectives, and internal and external factors all required consideration. Therefore SSM is highly recommended for use in making improvements to other social science courses and modules.

Abstract Background CPD educators and CME providers would benefit from further insight regarding barriers and supports in obtaining CME, including sources of information about CME. To address this gap, we sought to explore challenges that clinicians encounter as they seek CME, and time and monetary support allotted for CME. Methods In August 2018, we surveyed licensed US clinicians (physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants), sampling 100 respondents each of family medicine physicians, internal medicine and hospitalist physicians, medicine specialist physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants (1895 invited, 500 [26.3%] responded). The Internet-based questionnaire addressed barriers to obtaining CME, sources of CME information, and time and monetary support for CME. Results The most often-selected barriers were expense (338/500 [68%]) and travel time (N = 286 [57%]). The source of information about CME activities most commonly selected was online search (N = 348 [70%]). Direct email, professional associations, direct mail, and journals were also each selected by > 50% of respondents. Most respondents reported receiving 1–6 days (N = 301 [60%]) and $1000–$5000 (n = 263 [53%]) per year to use in CME activities. Most (> 70%) also reported no change in time or monetary support over the past 24 months. We found few significant differences in responses across clinician type or age group. In open-ended responses, respondents suggested eight ways to enhance CME: optimize location, reduce cost, publicize effectively, offer more courses and content, allow flexibility, ensure accessibility, make content clinically relevant, and encourage application. Conclusions Clinicians report that expense and travel time are the biggest barriers to CME. Time and money support is limited, and not increasing. Online search and email are the most frequently-used sources of information about CME. Those who organize and market CME should explore options that reduce barriers of time and money, and creatively use online tools to publicize new offerings.

Sources of information are a key part of the news process as it guides certain topics, influencing the media agenda. The goal of this study is to examine the most frequent voices on vaccines in the Portuguese press. A total of 300 news items were analysed via content analysis using as sources two newspapers from 2012 to 2017. Of all the articles, 97.7% included a source (n = 670). The most frequent were “governmental organisations”, “professional associations” and the “media”. Less frequent sources were “university scientists”, “governmental scientific bodies”, “consumer groups”, “doctors”, “scientific companies”, “NGOs” and “scientific journals”. Most articles used only non-scientific sources (n = 156). A total of 94 articles used both categories and 43 used exclusively scientific sources. Our findings support the assertion that media can be an instrument to disseminate information on vaccines. Nevertheless, despite being present in most articles, the number of sources per article was low, therefore not presenting a diversity of opinions and there was a lack of scientific voices, thus suggesting lower quality of the information being offered to the audience.

Purpose This paper aims to analyze the forfeiture regime under the Malaysian anti-money laundering law. Apart from discussing the relevant provisions, several court cases also were examined to identify the problems which arise in the implementation of such a powerful forfeiture regime. Design/methodology/approach This paper mainly relies on statutes and court cases as its primary sources of information. It is supported by secondary data to justify the analysis. This paper also used analytical descriptive approach to analyze relevant forfeiture provisions from statutes and to examine current court cases regarding the implementation of the forfeiture regime. Findings The Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) provides comprehensive procedures for the forfeiture of criminal proceeds. Any limitations of the previous statutory legislations have been addressed, and more importantly, the AMLATFPUAA introduces more powerful and innovative measures that can facilitate the recovery of illegal proceeds from money laundering and any other serious crimes. The AMLATFPUAA also provides avenue for the bona fide third parties to contest the forfeiture order. However, it appears that such right is not easy to be enforced. Originality/value This paper provides an analysis of the forfeiture regime under Malaysian anti-money laundering laws. It is hoped that the content of this paper can provide some insight into this particular area for enforcement authorities, practitioners, academics, policymakers and legal advisers not only in Malaysia but also elsewhere. The findings of this paper also expose any weakness or lacunae in the aspects of application and implementation of the forfeiture regime. Thus, more effective and workable legal solution especially on the issue of civil forfeiture of criminal assets could be considered for further accomplishment.

The article analyzes modern methods of teaching a foreign language and justifies the expediency of their use in technical institutions of higher education. The process of teaching English in non-linguistic higher educational institutions has certain features related to the different initial level of language training of first-year students; the number of academic hours allocated to the study of this discipline; the quantitative composition of groups; low motivation to learn a foreign language. It is noted that motivation plays an important role in the educational process, the formation of which among students of technical universities should be one of the main tasks of the educational process. It is established that it is possible to significantly increase the effectiveness of the lesson provided that the content of the discipline "foreign language" is professionally oriented in technical universities. It is found that the use of interactive learning technologies involves the use of communicative, in particular cognitive-communicative, and constructivist methods of teaching a foreign language. It is proved that the use of innovative approaches to teaching English and multimedia teaching tools allows students to increase motivation to learn foreign languages, provide access to new, alternative sources of information, develop independent mental activity, form communication skills, cultural and professional competence.

The Covid-19 pandemic is one of the greatest challenges to humanity of last decades. Effective prevention of its development is the problem of decision-making with many criteria, high uncertainty of the results of a choice, insufficiently understood feedbacks. There has been collected statistics on the main indicators of the pandemic over the past year. However, according to most researchers, the initial data on the number of infected and fatal cases are significantly underestimated. This makes inaccurate other important indicators, in particular, those that characterize the nature of the dynamics, the rate of infection and its mortality. At the same time, a large number of research results provide additional sources of information to improve the quality of pandemic analysis and forecasts. Mathematical models infections spreading have been significantly developed, which make it possible to refine individual indicators.According to model estimates, the maximum number of daily cases can be 50 times higher than the official data, and the dates of maxima can be up to 4-5 weeks earlier. For Ukraine, the highest values of "excess mortality" (as a percentage of the average level in 2015 - 2016) were observed in September (15.8%), October (20.3%), November (33.7%) and December (29.2%). In January 2021, according to incomplete preliminary data it is expected the significant reducing of the indicator to the value less than 2%. Per 100 thousand inhabitants, the "excess mortality" in 2020 was about 38.8 thousands (in the first 5 months there were negative values of the indicator), and for the period from June 2020 to January 2021 - about 53.5 thousands, or 14.1% of the base level for this period. An analysis of Google's search queries gives grounds to assume that in early January 2020, the pandemic spread in many countries on different continents, and precautionary measures were taken too late. The obtained data show that the involvement of additional sources of information makes it possible to compensate for the imperfections of official operational data and to un-derstand better the patterns of occurrence and development of Covid-19 pandemic. At the same time, a system approach to decision-making on prevention the development of a pandemic should take into account the information on morbidity and mortality statistics as well as other information, in particular on virus mutations, re-infection, vaccination, testing, socio-economic consequences etc. This should be the subject of further research.
