Background: The higher body mass index is a risk factor that associated with onset and progression of knee osteoarthritis by increasing the knee adduction moment. Lateral wedge insoles are used for reducing the knee adduction moment which may prevent the occurrence of knee osteoarthritis in healthy population.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the lateral wedge insole among normal, overweight, obese I and obese II female while walking.Methods: A cross-sectional experimental design study was used to investigate 80 females who aged between 18 – 40 years using 3-D Motion Analysis. The peak external knee adduction moment was collected in walking shoes and walking shoes with 5-degree lateral wedge insoles conditions. The significant difference was determined using Paired-T test (p = 0.05).Results: The peak external knee adduction moment was significantly decreased by the effect of shoes with lateral wedge insoles in normal, overweight and obese I (22.12%, 18.34% and 24.15%). However, it did not change in the obese II.Conclusion: The peak external knee adduction moment was decreased by the immediate effect of lateral wedge insoles. It may prevent the onset of knee osteoarthritis in normal, overweight, and obese I. Further study should investigate long term effect of lateral wedge insoles on the knee joint load and the effect of dose in higher body mass index.

AbstractBackgroundChildren with congenital cardiac disease experience challenges in developing healthy patterns of physical activity due to decreased exercise capacity and parental fear and confusion about what is permissible. The purpose of this study was to describe physical activity habits in children 10–14 years of age with congenital cardiac disease and the relationship of those habits to obesity as defined by body mass index.MethodsThis cross-sectional study used self-report measures and clinical data to describe the association between physical activity participation and body mass index in 10- to 14-year-old children with congenital cardiac disease. Further, physical activity levels were compared between children who were overweight or obese and those who were not.ResultsChildren (n = 84; 51 males; 33 females) reported low rates of physical activity compared to reports on healthy children. Only 9.5% were overweight (body mass index between the 85th and 94th percentile), and alarmingly 26% were obese (body mass index at or above the 95th percentile). Physical activity and body mass index were not significantly correlated (r = −0.11, p = 0.45) and there was no significant difference in mean physical activity (t = 0.67) between children who were overweight or obese and those who were not.ConclusionsChildren in this study reported low rates of physical activity and a higher obesity rate than was reported in previous studies. However, the two were not significantly correlated. Further research is indicated to determine the specific factors contributing to obesity and to test interventions to combat obesity in children with congenital cardiac disease.

Abstrak. Indeks Massa Tubuh (IMT) merupakan parameter yang digunakan untuk menilai komposisi tubuh dengan menggunakan klasifikasi Asia Pasifik. IMT menjadi salah satu faktor risiko terjadinya osteoartritis lutut. Osteoartritis lutut merupakan penyakit degeneratif yang terjadi pada sendi lutut. Berdasarkan RISKESDAS tahun 2018, Provinsi Aceh menduduki peringkat pertama sebagai provinsi dengan angka penyakit sendi terbanyak yang termasuk osteoartritis lutut yaitu 13.3%. Prevalensi indeks massa tubuh berlebih di Indonesia pada tahun 2018  meningkat dari 26.3% menjadi 34.4% sehingga kemungkinan terjadinya osteoartritis lutut juga meningkat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode observasional analitik dengan desain cross-sectional dilakukan dengan cara mengukur berat badan dan tinggi badan responden yang memenuhi kriteria penelitian berdasarkan pedoman American College of Rheumatology (ACR). Sampel dikumpulkan berdasarkan rekam medis di Rumah Sakit Umum Zainoel Abidin kota Banda Aceh sejak september hingga oktober 2019 yang melibatkan tujuh puluh responden sebagai sampel penelitian yang dimana 51 responden (72.9%) memiliki indeks massa tubuh berlebih dan 43 responden (61.4%) didiagnosis dengan Osteoartritis lutut. Berdasarkan hasil analisis uji Chi Square, nilai p value yang diperoleh adalah 0.021 (p value ≤ 0,05). Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan antara indeks massa tubuh dengan kejadian osteoartritis lutut di Rumah Sakit Umum Zainoel Abidin di kota Banda Aceh.Kata Kunci: Indeks massa tubuh; berat badan lebih, osteoartritis lutut;               Abstract. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a parameter to measure body composition which is classified into underweight, normal and overweight. Overweight has been known to potentially cause knee osteoarthritis. Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease happening on the knee. Based on RISKESDAS 2018, Aceh led Indonesia as a province with the highest number of knee arthritis (13.3%). In the same year, the prevalence of overweight in Indonesia has also increased from 26.3% to 34.4% and is expected to rise annually. This research is an analytic observational using cross sectional design. The method used in this research is body weight and body length measurement of samples fulfilling the criteria based on American College of Rheumatology (ACR). Data were collected based on medicalr record at Zainoel Abidin General Hospital, Banda Aceh, from September to October 2019. We examined 70 respondents, 51 of them (72.9%) had overweight IMT and 43 of them (61.4%) were diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis. Chi Square analysis showed p value 0,021 (p value ≤ 0.05). We concluded that there is a correlation between body mass index with knee osteoarthritis in Zainoel Abidin General Hospital, Banda Aceh.Keyword: Body Mass Index; overweight; knee osteoarthritis;

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disorder that is associated with significant morbidity, disability, and medical costs, particularly in its advanced stages. While the cause of knee OA remains unclear, it has been associated with various risk factors, such as age, sex, genetic predisposition, biomechanical, and obesity. Pain in osteoarthritis occurs due to combination of various factors. Pain significantly increases the medical and non medical cost in OA. Data showed that obesity will increase the mechanical stress and pain of knee OA. However, uncertainty remains regarding potential relationship between body mass index (BMI) and pain in osteoarthritis. Moreover, since obesity is one of modifiable and preventable risk factors for the onset and progression of the disease, it is important to know the correlation between BMI and severity of pain in knee OA.Objectives: To investigate the relationship between body mass index and severity of joint pain in knee osteoarthritis.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted and subjects were osteoarthritis patients in rheumatology clinic of Sardjito general hospital. Body mass index and visual analogue scale (VAS) score were measured. Correlation between BMI and VAS score were analyzed by bivariate correlation test.Results: There were 80 patients with osteoarthritis who participated in the study. Mean BMI was 26.36 +4.23 kg/m2 and VAS score was 52.40+24.53 mm. The correlation test showed that there was a positive but non significant correlation between BMI and VAS scores (r = 0,11; p = 0,33).Conclusion: There was a positive but non significant correlation between body mass index and the severity of joint pain in knee osteoarthritis.

Background and Objectives: Estimation of dental age is based upon the rate of development and calcification of tooth buds and their progressive sequence of eruption in the oral cavity. The tooth calcification provides a valuable indicator of dental age and serves as an index of the maturation of the child. The aim of this study is to determine whether Body Mass Index (BMI) has association with dental maturation. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study design was applied for the present study, 383 school children were participated in this study which nominated from Erbil city. For the sample to be representative the city was divided in to six geographic areas according to the municipalities, the samples randomly selected school children of 10 to 14 years old from both genders. The height and the weight of each participant had been recorded in the college of dentistry / Hawler Medical University in order to calculate the body mass index of the following the guidelines of centers of disease control (CDC) , at the same time an orthopantomography radiograph had been used to investigate the stage of the dental maturation using the Demirjian method, finally, the relationship between BMI and dental maturation were investigated using chi square test with P value of ≤ 0.05 was considered significant difference. Result: there was a statistically significant relationship between dental maturation and BMI. The majority (93.6%) of samples with under-mature dentition were under-weight at the same time. The vast majority (96%) of samples with mature dentition had normal BMI. In the same manner, majority (91.7%) of samples with over mature dentition were over-weight too. Chi square test was used to find out the association and P-value was 0.001 Conclusion: In conclusion, normal weight students have normal dental maturation, underweight students have under dental maturation and overweight or obese students have over dental maturation. Abstract Background High biomechanical loading is believed to be a risk factor to pain in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA), but controversial findings have been reported on the relationship between external knee adduction moment (KAM) and pain. A more comprehensive analysis considering other factor such as external knee flexion moment (KFM) could help better reveal this relationship. This study explored the relationship between external knee adduction moment and pain intensity in participants with knee osteoarthritis (OA) using an integrated path analysis model. Methods This was a cross-sectional study based on laboratory setting. Forty-seven participants with clinical and radiographic medial knee OA were analyzed for their external knee adduction moment (KAM) and knee flexion moment (KFM) during walking using a motion analysis system. Pain intensity was measured by visual analogue scale (VAS) and the pain subscale of the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score. Varus/valgus alignment was captured and quantified using a bi-planar X-ray system. Using a path analysis model, the relationships between pain intensity, KAM, KFM, OA radiographic severity, knee varus angle and walking speed were examined. Results The proposed path model met the goodness-of-fit criteria. Based on this model, KAM had a negative effect on VAS pain indirectly through the mediation of KFM. The model indicated KAM and KFM were negatively related to one another; and KFM was positively related to VAS. The KAM index, defined as (KAM/ (KAM + KFM)), was negatively related to VAS. Conclusions Path analysis enabled the construction of a more integrated pathokinematic framework for people with knee OA. The KAM index which reflected the load sharing on the frontal and sagittal planes also revealed its relationship with pain. Re-distribution of mechanical loading from frontal to sagittal plane might be a strategy for pain avoidance associated with mechanical irritation.
