This study aims to describe the increase of critical thinking skills in learning Mathematics of fifth-grade students in SD N Noborejo 01 Argomulya sub-district, Salatiga. This study is a spiral action class study of the Mc. Taggart model which consists of 2 cycles, where each cycle has 4 stages, namely the stages of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting, however at the acting and observing stages were carried out at the same time. The data collection techniques carried out in this study were observation and tests. The instruments used were the observation sheet of teacher and student activities as well as a test sheet for students’ critical thinking skills. Data analysis was performed using comparative descriptive analysis, this was done by comparing the pre-cycle, cycle I and cycle II. The researcher determined the success indicator of 80% of students completing with the Minimum Criteria of Mastery Learning ≥ 70. The results showed that by applying the Problem Based Learning model students’ critical thinking skills in mathematics subjects can be improved, where it was shown that in the first cycle students’ critical thinking skills was 58.98% and in the second cycle, it increased to 97.44%. The number of students who completed the pre-cycle was 15 (38.5%) students, where it increased to 22 (56.4%) students in cycle I and increased again to 33 (84.6%) students in cycle II. The research can be said successful because it has reached a success indicator of 80% of all fifth-grade students who completed the Minimum Criteria of Mastery Learning ≥ 70. Based on these results, research with Problem Based Learning learning models can improve students’ critical thinking skills thus it influences student learning outcomes on the subject of mathematics.

This research aims to find out the effect of the cooperative problem-based learning on the improvement of the critical thinking and interpersonal intelligence of the fifth-grade students. This research was a quasi-experiment with the pretest-posttest control group design. The subjects were all fifth-grade students of SDN Liang Anggang 1, Pandahan 1, and Pandahan 2, Bati-Bati District of South Kalimantan in the second semester of the academic year 2015/2016. Data collection techniques that used were test and scale technique. The test was used to find out the critical thinking and the scale were used to find out the interpersonal intelligence. The hypothesis was tested using t-test and MANOVA with 0.05 significant levels. The result of this research shows that the use of the cooperative problem-based learning model in natural science teaching is effective in improving critical thinking and interpersonal intelligence of the fifth-grade students. Based on the result of t-test in posttest, the experimental I and II with control group show that the sig. < 0.05 and the result of the MANOVA in the experimental I and II with control group show that the significant value 0.000 ˂ 0.05.

The background of this research is the lack of fifth students’ learning activities and critical thinking skills of science learning. This study aims to discuss and obtain data about the improvement of students’ learning activities and critical thinking skills in science learning with a problem-based learning (PBL) approach in grade 4 in a public elementary school in Suliki District. This type of research is classroom action research consisting of four stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. This research consists of two cycles and the subjects in this study were 21 fifth grade students, consisting of 11 boys and 10 girls in 2016/2017 academic year. Data collection techniques used were observation sheets and tests. The data were analyzed using percentages and data reduction. The results showed that the implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) approach increased students’ learning activities and critical thinking skills in science learning which was marked by an increase of an average student's critical thinking ability from 69 in cycle I to 81 in cycle II.

The purpose of this study is to improve critical thinking skills and student learning independence using Problem Based Learning (PBL) models based on scientific literacy. The research used is PTK with 2 cycles and each cycle is carried out in 2 meetings, each meeting consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The tools used to collect data are written test questions, observation sheets of teacher and student activities, observation sheets for learning independence attitude, questionnaire on learning independence attitude scale, and documentation. Subjects in this study were 28 students. The results showed that the first cycle students gained critical thinking skills with an average of 2.6 with enough categories, increased in cycle II to 3.6 with good categories. Learning independence in cycle I gained an average of 3.85 in the good category and increased in the second cycle to 3.9 in the good category. This proves that with PBL based on scientific literacy can improve critical thinking skills and independence of learning.

Abstract: This research applies a guided inquiry method that is used to improve critical thinking skills in cognitive categories, general and special affective disposition categories and to determine the difference in the proportion of scores of six critical thinking elements in the cognitive category of fifth-grade students in four Kanisius elementary schools in Yogyakarta. The type of research used quantitative research. Critical thinking ability in the cognitive category is known from the results of the pretest and posttest scores which are arranged based on the test essays of a case. Whereas to measure the critical thinking skills of general and special affective disposition categories, a questionnaire with a Lickert scale was used which was filled out by the students. The application of the inquiry method in the science course further enhances critical thinking skills in the cognitive category compared to critical thinking skills in general and special affective disposition categories of fifth-grade students in four Kanisius Elementary Schools in Yogyakarta. There is a difference in the proportion of the increase in the score of six elements of critical thinking in the cognitive category in class V students in four Kanisius Elementary Schools in Yogyakarta. The increase in the six elements can be sorted from the highest to the lowest increase, namely interpretation, analysis, self-regulation, inference, evaluation, and explanation.
