A group of 50 sets of geometric designs was administered to 24 children diagnosed as brain-injured by a physician and 24 control children who were matched on sex, age, and verbal ability as determined by a vocabulary test. Two administrations of the test were given to each child. The first time children were presented with a stimulus design and after a 5-sec. interval asked to select the same design from four alternatives on a second card. The second administration involved marching the stimulus design with one of the four alternatives with the stimulus card still in view. The difference in performance between the two groups under both conditions was significant ( p < .001).

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a worldwide significant drop of admissions to the emergency department (ED). The aim of the study was to retrospectively investigate the pandemic impact on ED admissions, management, and severity of three abdominal emergencies (appendicitis, diverticulitis, and cholecystitis) during the COVID-19 pandemic using 2017–2019 data as a control. The difference in clinical and pathological disease severity was the primary outcome measure while differences in (i) ED admissions, (ii) triage urgency codes, and (iii) surgical rates were the second ones. Overall, ED admissions for the selected conditions decreased by 34.9% during the pandemic (control: 996, 2020: 648) and lower triage urgency codes were assigned for cholecystitis (control: 170/556, 2020: 66/356, p < 0.001) and appendicitis (control: 40/178, 2020: 21/157, p = 0.031). Less surgical procedures were performed in 2020 (control: 447, 2020: 309), but the surgical rate was stable (47.7% in 2020 vs. 44.8% in 2017–2019). Considering the clinical and pathological assessments, a higher percentage of severe cases was observed in the four pandemic peak months of 2020 (control: 98/192, 2020: 87/109; p < 0.001 and control: 105/192, 2020: 87/109; p < 0.001). For the first time in this study, pathological findings objectively demonstrated an increased disease severity of the analyzed conditions during the early COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACTBackgroundEnhanced temporal summation (TS), measured through self-reported pain ratings, has been interpreted as indicative of central sensitisation in fibromyalgia. Greater TS in patients, however, has not been universally observed. It is also unclear whether increased pain report maintains beyond the TS period.MethodsIn this study, we measured TS through continuously reported pain ratings. Fibromyalgia-diagnosed patients (n = 17) and matched pain-free controls (n = 13) rated painful transcutaneous electrical stimulation of various intensity levels in 18 one-minute-long blocks. Pain was rated on a 101-point visual analogue scale. The resulting continuous response was divided into TS (< 15s) and adaptation (15 – 60s) periods. Average pain values were extracted for each period alongside the timing of key events such as maximal pain ratings. The difference in temporal summation and adaptation measures between fibromyalgia and control participants was analysed using mixed-effects modelling.ResultsThe average pain ratings for TS and adaptation periods were not significantly associated with fibromyalgia diagnosis but were with stimulation intensity. The same was true for the magnitude of the maximal rating during TS and the slope leading to that peak rating. The presence of fibromyalgia, however, did predict the time of the maximal TS rating, as well as the value and the time of the maximal adaptation rating.ConclusionsOur study did not find homogeneously increased TS pain ratings. Instead, by utilising continuous pain data we demonstrate for the first time that the time of TS peak rating, as well as the magnitude and time of adaptation peak rating are linked to fibromyalgia diagnosis.

The need for reliable crowd simulation tools has necessitated an accurate understanding of human behavior and the rules that govern their movements under normal and emergency escapes. This paper investigates the dynamics of merging streams of pedestrians. In the merging sections, the interaction between pedestrians and geometric features of merging sections can significantly impede the collective motion and can increase the possibility of flow breakdown, particularly under emergency conditions. Therefore, to create safe and efficient designs, it is important to study human movement characteristics associated with these types of conflicting geometries. In this study, empirical data collected from large numbers of high-density experiments with people at different desired speed levels were used to explore the effect of different merging configurations (i.e., design and angle) on dynamics of merging crowds. For the first time, this study examined the impact of elevated speed regimes (as a behavioral proxy of emergency escapes) on the movement efficiency of crowds in merging sections with different geometric designs. In particular, this study investigated the impact of these conflicting geometric settings on the average waiting time in the system as a measure of movement efficiency. Results suggest that the experienced delay is dramatically greater in asymmetrical setups compared with the delay in symmetrical setups and that the difference is even more pronounced at elevated levels of pedestrians’ desired speed. These findings give significant insights into the implications of inefficient designs of merging sections for pedestrians’ safety, notably when quick movement of crowds is necessary (e.g., in emergencies).

Summary: Vocabulary tests, part of most test batteries of general intellectual ability, measure both verbal and general ability. Newly developed techniques for confirmatory factor analysis of dichotomous variables make it possible to analyze the influence of different abilities on the performance on each item. In the testing procedure of the Computerized Swedish Enlistment test battery, eight different subtests of a new vocabulary test were given randomly to subsamples of a representative sample of 18-year-old male conscripts (N = 9001). Three central dimensions of a hierarchical model of intellectual abilities, general (G), verbal (Gc'), and spatial ability (Gv') were estimated under different assumptions of the nature of the data. In addition to an ordinary analysis of covariance matrices, assuming linearity of relations, the item variables were treated as categorical variables in the Mplus program. All eight subtests fit the hierarchical model, and the items were found to load about equally on G and Gc'. The results also indicate that if nonlinearity is not taken into account, the G loadings for the easy items are underestimated. These items, moreover, appear to be better measures of G than the difficult ones. The practical utility of the outcome for item selection and the theoretical implications for the question of the origin of verbal ability are discussed.

Abstract The paper attempts to determine an optimum structure of a directional measurement and control network intended for investigating horizontal displacements. For this purpose it uses the notion of entropy as a logarithmical measure of probability of the state of a particular observation system. An optimum number of observations results from the difference of the entropy of the vector of parameters ΔHX̂ (x)corresponding to one extra observation. An increment of entropy interpreted as an increment of the amount of information about the state of the system determines the adoption or rejection of another extra observation to be carried out.

The purposes of this research were to know: the difference of improvement in self-regulated learning of students that given problem-based learning with students that given  direct learning. The type of this research is a quasi-experimental research by taking samples from the existing population. The variable of this research consist of independent variable that is problem based learning model while the dependent variable isself regulated learning of student.The population of this research is all students of SMP Swasta Ar-rahman Percut and the sample of this research is grade eight with taken sample two classes (experiment and control)  with total 60 students. The instrument of this research were: scale of self-regulated learning. Data that have been collected then analyzed and performed hypothesis testing by using T-test. Based of the results analysis, it showed that: improvment  of the students’ self-regulated learning that given problem-based learning was higher than the students’ ability that given direct learning His then, suggested that problem-based learning be used as an alternative for mathematic teacher to improved students’ ability in mathematical critical thinking and self-regulated learning.

In the specialized literature, financial controlling is seen as an innovative approach to financial management. It is often presented as the most promising instrument of financial diagnostics. Generally speaking, financial controlling is seen as a process of managing the company`s assets which are valued in monetary measures. The difference between the financial management and the financial controlling is that the second covers all functions of management, analysis and control of finances, aiming at maximizing their effective use and increasing the value of the enterprise. Financial controlling is often seen as a function of the common practice of financial management. Its objective is to preserve the financial stability and financial sustainability of enterprises operating in a highly aggressive business environment.

The objective of this study is to find out the effect of using mobile access (Audio Visual Easy Learn English) on students’ vocabulary achievement at SMPN 11 Kendari. Mobile  Access  (Audio  visual  easy  learn  English)  as  a media in learning teaching process. This research used quasi experimental design, the population is all seventh- grade students, and the sample is class VII1 as the experimental group and VII2as control group. The experimental group consisted of 30 students and control group consisted of 21 students. The research instrument consisted of 44 questions of vocabulary test. To collect the data, the researcher gave pre-test, taught by using Mobile Access  (Audio  Visual  Easy  Learn  English),  and  giving post-test. Mean score of post-tests (79.63) in experimental class is higher than pre-test score (59.66). While, in control class also has improvement but not too significant. It can be seen on post-test score (64.80) is higher than pre-test score (55.19). Based on the calculation of T-test, it shows that tcount = 3.775, while t-table =2.010 at level of = 0.05 with DF = 49. It means that tcount is higher than table, Therefore H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. This can be concluded that  there  was a  significant  effect  of  using a significant effect using Mobile Access (Audio Visual Easy Learn English) on students’ vocabulary achievement at the seventh-grade students of SMPN 11 Kendari. Keywords: MA, Mobile Access, Audio Visual Easy Learn English, vocabulary achievement

Lactoferrin was isolated and purified for the first time over 50-years ago. Since then, extensive studies on the structure and function of this protein have been performed and the research is still being continued. In this mini-review we focus on presenting recent scientific efforts towards the elucidation of the role and therapeutic potential of lactoferrin saturated with iron(III) or manganese(III) ions. The difference in biological activity of metal-saturated lactoferrin vs. the unmetalated one is emphasized. The strategies for oral delivery of lactoferrin, are also reviewed, with particular attention to the metalated protein.
