Abstract Application of dried plant water soluble extracts in soil Pb decontamination is rear, but advantageous due to their ecological biodegradability. Single batch laboratory scale suitability of Terminalia mantaly, Panicum maximum, Eleusine indica and water as washing solutions for Pb removal from contaminated and spiked soils at different soil pulp densities (3%, 6%, 9%, 12%, 15% and 18%) and washing time (1, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 96 h) was investigated. Washings of Terminalia mantaly and Panicum maximum proved more efficient comparatively for contaminated soil with Pb removal efficiency of 27.2±0.64% and 27.0±0.52% respectively at 3% soil pulp density and washing time of 96 h. Removal efficiency increased with increasing washing time but decreased with increasing of soil pulp density. Furthermore, water was found effective for removing Pb from spiked soils with maximum removal efficiency of 74.5±3.38% at 3% soil pulp density after 1 h washing. High exchangeable fraction of Pb (81.2%) in spiked soil makes water more suitable against other washing solutions. Statistical t-testing showed significant difference in Pb removal efficiency between contaminated and spiked soils for all four washing solutions, reflecting differences in geochemical phases of Pb in both soils. Terminalia mantaly and Panicum maximum showed promising result in soil washing and have potential for application in Pb removal from contaminated soils. However, chemical modifications are needed to enhance and improve on their efficiencies. Similarly, more information is needed to predict and model removal efficiencies when multiple washing steps are applied.

The indoleacetic acid produced by symbiotic bacteria is an important phytohormone signaling microbe-plant interaction, being therefore essential for rhizoremediation. In this study, the effect of different concentrations of copper ions on the bacterial growth and indoleacetic acid production was investigated in two strains of Mesorhizobium loti in in vitro conditions, aiming to determine critical concentrations of this heavy metal for rhizoremediation of contaminated soils using this bacterium. The experiment consisted on a control culture without copper and three treatments supplemented with 10 mg.L-1, 20 mg.L-1 or 50 mg.L-1 of CuSO4. For both strains, the growth stopped after 48h and no significant difference was observed across treatments. The production of indoleacetic acid by the control treatment without copper was significantly higher in comparison to the copper- containing treatments. Mesorhizobium loti SEMIA806 and SEMIA816 are resistant to up to 50 mg.L-1 of CuSO4 in the culture medium, presenting effective growth. The synthesis of indoleacetic acid was strongly reduced but not excluded by ions copper in the medium. So, it is expected that environmental copper found in the soil up to the concentration of 50 mg.L-1 will not preclude the symbiotic interaction between M. loti and leguminous host plant in rhizoremediation enterprises.

This study investigated the potential of Aspergillus sydowii and Fusarium lichenicola as mixed cultures in the biodegradation of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons TPHs in oilfield wastewater. Oilfield wastewater was collected from an onshore oil producing platform and biodegradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons was investigated using standard methods. Fungi were isolated from oilfield wastewater contaminated soils obtained from the vicinity of the oil producing platform. Experimental control set-up and treatment with mixed culture of fungal isolates were periodically analyzed on days 7 and 21 intervals for total petroleum hydrocarbon degradation using Gas Chromatography (GC). The total amount of TPHs on day 1 recorded 381. 871 mg/l.  The amount of TPHs on days 7 and 21 in the mixed culture of fungi was 108.975 mg/l and 21.105 mg/l respectively while TPHs in control was 342.891 mg/l and 240.749 mg/l respectively. There was a significant difference between the mixed culture and the control on days 7 and 21 at p≤0.05. The results therefore revealed actual and significant reduction of TPHs in the mixed culture. In addition, there was clearance of n-alkanes by the mixed culture. This suggests that fungi have great potentials in biodegradation of TPHs and in remediation of TPH contaminated environments.

A field experiment was conducted at the Lajas Experiment Substation in the semiarid region of Puerto Rico to evaluate the production and persistence of 8 tropical grasses, Cynodon nlemfuensis Star, C. dactylon Coastcross-1, C. plectostachyus Star, Panicum maximum USDA Pl291047, Makueni, Guinea and P. maximum USDA PI 259553, and the naturalized pasture Dichanthium annulatus pajon. Small plots were grazed at 3- to 5-week intervals for 2 years. P. maximum USDA PI 259553 and Makueni were highly productive in the semiarid,.region, as well as in previous experiments in humid regions in Puerto Rico. They are highly recommended for grazing trials. P. maximum Makueni and USDA PI 291047 were the most productive during the first year, although they were not significantly different (P=0.05) from P. maximum USDA PI 259553 and Common Guinea, and Cynodon plectyostachyus Star. The production of C. nlemluensis Star was similar to that of Dichanthium annulatus but higher than that of C. dactylon Coastcross-1 (P=0.05). The average production for all grasses declined at the beginning of the year, during the cool short days in February and March, 1983, without any significant difference (P=0.05) among species and cultivars. Production increased at the beginning of the rainy season, but it was low at the peak of the rainy season because of trampling in poorly aerated and compact soils. C. plectostachyus Star was the most productive grass during the second year of experiment, although it was not significantly different (P=0.05) from P. maximum USDA PI 291017 and 259553 and cultivar Makueni. The production of Common Guinea and that of D. annulatus were. similar and higher than that of C. nlemfuensis Star and C. dactylon Coastcross-1 (P=0.05), which did not persist at the end of the experiment. Forage production during the second year was lower than in the first year because of less rainfall in 1983. The mean CP content of all grasses varied from 11.29 to 14.05, except that of D. annulatus, which was only 9.73%. CP content was lower during the periods of maximum forage production.

Innovative (patent information research, elaboration of new methods and their implementation) and environmental management, the using of human-contaminated soils, soil protection against pollution and its prevention are the basic directions of the strategic management of soil resources. In conditions of intensive anthropogenic pressure the assessment of the ecological status of soils is an important factor, which reduces the risks of soil degradation and to propose ways to restore their productive and ecological functions on the further development of functional - ecological approach in soil science (Dobrovolsky, Nikitin, 1986, 1996). Therefore, urgent and important in theoretical and practical aspect is the elaboration of new technical decisions (methods) of soil quality assessment to create conditions to improve and to prevent the reduction of the level of productivity of soils and plants, the deterioration of their quality. The purpose of the investigations – the analysis of information sources existing patent information base of Ukraine and Russia on the issue of the environmental assessment of soils and perform patent research. Tasks perform patent research: the technical level of the object; analysis of scientific and technical activities leading developers; studying trends existing way to do that; techno-economic analysis of technical solutions/inventions that meet the objectives of the development; the study of the newness and novelty of the developed object and its constituent parts; investigated of the feasibility of its legal protection. It was considered the features of assessment of the soils environmental status in the investigation of the current patent-information database in Ukraine and Russia, components of which are developed new technical decisions. It was reviewed the providing patent information to assess the ecological status of both contaminated and uncontaminated soils. By analysis it was found that the patent-information support of Ukraine and Russia relative to existing methods of soils ecological status assessment is presented by the following ways: the ways of assessing of the soils research background concentrations, mobile, gross or water-soluble forms of trace elements and heavy metals; estimates based on bioassay and bioindication in combination with chemical analytical measurement indicators; comprehensive and expert evaluation of the properties of soils and its contamination; assessment of soil quality, considering the physical, physic-chemical and others properties; assessment of soil pollution using GIS technology, etc. The technical result of the developed methods is to improve the objectivity of assessment of changing soil quality and accuracy of the expert-analytical assessments of functional suitability of soils certain territory to growing different crops on a permanent or constant impact factor of pollution; for zoning for maximum efficiency use of different methods, methods of remediation of contaminated soils or soil improvers of different nature and micronutrients using to optimize the trace element status of soil and plants, soil quality; to evaluate the effectiveness of the testing results of the elaborated technical decisions in different soil-climatic zones.

The influence of fattening conditions on the digestive and metabolic processes in animals is actively studied to increase the production of animal food. The aim of the study was to estimate the total amount of water-soluble antioxidants in the blood serum of Duroc boars depending on the duration of fattening. Experiments were conducted on 102 animals to confirm the results of laboratory studies, as well as determination of the total antioxidant activity of pig blood serum by amperometric method. For the first time, a significant difference in antioxidant activity was found in blood samples of Duroc boars with the duration of their fattening from 81 to 101 days.

Background: Enhanced utilization of certain drugs may be possible through the development of alternative delivery forms. Adverse gastrointestinal tract effects such as irritation and ulceration have limited wider applications of NSAIDs in antiiflammatory therapy. This challenge may be overcome through nano topical formulations. Objective: This study was aimed at exploring the potentials of a transdermal nanovesicular formulation for safe and enhanced delivery of piroxicam (PRX), a poorly water-soluble NSAID. Methods: Preformulation studies were done using DSC and FTIR. Ethosomal nanovesicular carrier (ENVC) was prepared by thin-film deposition technique using Phospholipon® 90 H (P90H) and ethanol, and then converted into gel form. The formulation was characterized using a commercial PRX gel as control. Permeation studies were done using rat skin and Franz diffusion cell. Samples were assayed spectrophotometrically and the data obtained analyzed by ANOVA using GraphPad Prism software. Results: The preformulation studies showed compatibility between PRX and P90H. Spherical vesicles of mean size 343.1 ± 5.9 nm, and polydispersity index 0.510 were produced, which remained stable for over 2 years. The optimized formulation (PE30) exhibited pseudoplastic flow, indicating good consistency. The rate of permeation increased with time in the order: PE30 > Commercial, with significant difference (p< 0.05). It also showed higher inhibition of inflammation (71.92 ± 9.67 %) than the reference (64.12 ± 7.92 %). Conclusions: ENVC gel of PRX was formulated. It showed potentials for enhanced transdermal delivery and anti-inflammatory activity relative to the reference. This may be further developed as a safe alternative to the oral form.

Abstract. The state of Washington is the biggest fresh market apple ( Borkh.) producer in the U.S., and the state’s annual apple production has exceeded 60% of the national production. Due to the extensive labor requirements for harvesting fresh market apples, there is burgeoning demand for mechanical harvest solutions. Our transdisciplinary studies on mechanical harvest systems for apples have shown that fruit removal efficiency (FRE) with a vibratory system can be improved with precision canopy management. In this study, we evaluated the effect of precision pruning strategies on FRE in two groups (106 and 107, respectively) of randomly selected horizontal branches of ‘Jazz/M.9’ apple trees in a commercial orchard. Fruiting lateral branches were pruned to either shorter than 15 cm (guideline 1, G1) or 23 cm (guideline 2, G2). Harvest tests were conducted using a shake-and-catch harvester prototype developed by Washington State University with a fixed vibrating frequency of 20 Hz and shaking duration of 5 s. FRE for branches treated with G1 was significantly higher (91%) than FRE for branches treated with G2 (81%). We recorded a negative relationship between FRE and lateral shoot length. FRE was up to 98% when shoots were shorter than 5 cm, and FRE was only 56% for shoots of 25 cm or longer. We developed a shoot diameter-to-length index (S-index) to better understand the effect of shoot size on FRE. FRE was as high as 98% when the S-index was greater than 0.15. In addition, mechanically harvested fruit quality was assessed by categorizing the fruit into Extra Fancy, Fancy, and Downgrade fresh market classes based on USDA standards; however, no significant difference was found between the two treated groups. These results suggest that pruning lateral fruiting branches to less than 15 cm or to an S-index greater than 0.03 is required to achieve FRE of 85% with no negative impacts on fruit quality. Abstract An analytical method was developed to determine the concentration of nitroaromatic and nitramine residues in soil. Air-dried soil samples are ground with a mortar and pestle and extracted with acetonitrile in an ultrasonic bath. A portion of extract is diluted with aqueous CaCh to flocculate suspended particles, filtered, and analyzed by liquid chromatography. The method provides linear calibration curves over a wide range of concentration. Detection limits ranged from 0.03 to 1.27 ng/g. Recovery of spiked analyte was better than 80% for all analytes tested. Each step in the analytical procedure was optimized using spiked and field-contaminated soils. This optimization included tests to (1) assess the effectiveness and kinetics associated with various extraction methods, solvents, and soil-to-solvent ratios; (2) compare separations achievable using various combinations of reverse-phase columns and eluants; (3) assess analyte recovery and ease of use for various procedures to remove particles from extracts; and (4) document stability of soil extracts and analytical stock and working standards. A ruggedness test and a preliminary assessment at 2 other laboratories indicated that the method was sufficiently rugged to justify a full-scale collaborative test. A comparison of extraction kinetics for spiked soil vs field-contaminated soil revealed very different kinetic behavior, indicating it is unwise to develop extraction procedures based solely on spiked soils.

Abstract In the present study, three low-cost filter aggregate materials were tested and compared for organic matter and fecal coliform (FC) removal at the laboratory scale. Setups were subjected to synthetic wastewater at two hydraulic loading rates (HLR), i.e. 4 cm/day and 40 cm/day. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) at the two HLRs varied from 4 days to 12 h, respectively. The result obtained shows that the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) removal efficiency of aggregate materials decreased with the increase in HLR. Both at high and low HLR, the terracotta aggregate material exhibited maximum BOD5 loading removal and without significant difference for the case of FC removal efficiency for all the three aggregate materials. At higher HLR, cell debris and biofilm loss from the aggregate material contributed to the chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels in the treated water. The terracotta aggregate material provided best organic matter removal at both HLRs. The study demonstrates the potential of incorporating inexpensive and readily available local materials into decentralized, frugal green infrastructure interventions capable of lowering the quantum of harmful biological contaminants in open storm water channels in rapidly urbanizing cities of developing countries, and that the terracotta aggregate material provided best organic removal at both HLRs.

Abstract Objectives The main shelf-stable product of yam is the traditional yam flour (elubo), Yams (Dioscorea spp.) which are regarded as traditional foods are consumed in various ways but majorly consumed as yam flour in the south west region of Nigeria. This study investigated the physical, functional and sensory properties and anti-nutrients contents of peeled and unpeeled yam flour. Methods Yam bought in the popular market production procedures were followed, washing, peeling and slicing, parboiling, steeping. draining, drying, milling, and packaging for peeled yam and unpeeled yam peeling was not included in the process, the two samples were analyzed chemically according to the official methods of analysis described by the Association of Official Analytical Chemist as well as sensory evaluation. Results The results of the study confirmed the significant difference in the micro nutrients content of peeled and unpeeled yam flour in fats and water soluble vitamins respectively (K µg/100 g = 6.97,11.83, Fe(mg/kg) = 95.2, 126.9, minerals content Zn(mg/kg) 13.48, 22.92, Fe(mg/kg) 95.2126.9 and anti-nutrient properties of the ‘Amala’ made from the two products (peeled and unpeeled yam flour) the percentage of Tannin 0.0023, 0.0010 and Hydrocynaide (mg/kg) 0.92, 1.01.The proximate analysis of unpeeled yam four indicated a high value than that of peeled yam flour in protein (2.47, 2.28), fats (1.86, 0.54), ash (3.59, 2.32), and fibre (3.09, 1.31) of both samples respectively but the energy content derived from the ‘amala’ made from unpeeled yam flour is lesser to that of peeled yam flour. Significant exist between the two samples in sensory evaluation of taste, texture, color, mouldability, aroma and general acceptability. Conclusions The result shown that the consumption of unpeeled yam flour can be useful in treatment of nutrient deficiencies diseases. Funding Sources Self.
