Abstract Civil engineering is constantly changing and introducing new technologies of building, demolishing, restructuring, modernisation, etc. The article presents the innovative subject of relocation of structures, i.e. moving them to a different place. The difficulty of relocation is influenced by the technical condition of the structure, its weight, and intended time duration of the relocation. The article shows how complex the discussed issue is. The subject was selected due to its infinitesimal presence in the literature.

This paper shows a teaching experience related to the use of computed tomography in the teaching of concrete for undergraduate students of the civil engineering degree. This experience reveals that computed tomography is a powerful tool to facilitate the understanding of all those aspects related to the microstructure of concrete, thus facilitating comprehension of the correlation between the microstructure and its macroscopic response. In addition, students showed a greater motivation and interest in the subject, which promotes better academic learning. A pilot test was carried out to evaluate the viability of these practices and to analyze the teaching impact of this activity. The results show that students were very interested in the use of new technologies in teaching and, more particularly, in the use of computed tomography. The students satisfactorily received the project. A greater motivation of the students in the subject was also observed, which resulted in better grades when compared with those of previous courses. The results reveal that the average grade of the students rose by around 8%, and a higher percentage of students achieved higher scores when compared to the previous five years.

Science, technology and human values have been the subject of enquiry in the last few years for social scientists and eventually the relationship between science and gender is the subject of an ongoing debate. This is due to the event of globalization which led to the exponential growth of new technologies like assisted reproductive technology (ART). ART, one of the most iconic technological innovations of the twentieth century, has become increasingly a normal social fact of life. Since ART invades multiple human discourses—thereby transforming culture, society and politics—it is important what is sociological about ART as well as what is biological. This article argues in commendation of sociology of technology, which is alert to its democratic potential but does not concurrently conceal the historical and continuing role of technology in legitimizing gender discrimination. The article draws the empirical insights from local articulations (i.e., Odisha state in eastern India) for the understandings of motherhood, freedom and choice, reproductive right and rights over the body to which ART has contributed. Sociologically, the article has been supplemented within the broader perspectives of determinism, compatibilism alongside feminism.

Many of the large number of underground works constructed or under construction in recent years are in unfavorable terrains facing unusual situations and construction conditions. This is the case of the subject under study in this paper: a tunnel excavated in evaporitic rocks that experienced significant karstification problems very quickly over time. As a result of this situation, the causes that may underlie this rapid karstification are investigated and a novel methodology is presented in civil engineering where the use of saturation indices for the different mineral specimens present has been crucial. The drainage of the rock massif of El Regajal (Madrid-Toledo, Spain, in the Madrid-Valencia high-speed train line) was studied and permitted the in-situ study of the hydrogeochemical evolution of water flow in the Miocene evaporitic materials of the Tajo Basin as a full-scale testing laboratory, that are conforms as a whole, a single aquifer. The work provides a novel methodology based on the calculation of activities through the hydrogeochemical study of water samples in different piezometers, estimating the saturation index of different saline materials and the dissolution capacity of the brine, which is surprisingly very high despite the high electrical conductivity. The circulating brine appears unsaturated with respect to thenardite, mirabilite, epsomite, glauberite, and halite. The alteration of the underground flow and the consequent renewal of the water of the aquifer by the infiltration water of rain and irrigation is the cause of the hydrogeochemical imbalance and the modification of the characteristics of the massif. These modifications include very important loss of material by dissolution, altering the resistance of the terrain and the increase of the porosity. Simultaneously, different expansive and recrystallization processes that decrease the porosity of the massif were identified in the present work. The hydrogeochemical study allows the evolution of these phenomena to be followed over time, and this, in turn, may facilitate the implementation of preventive works in civil engineering.

High-resolution pixel LED headlamps are lighting devices that can produce high-resolution light distribution to adapt to road and traffic conditions, intelligently illuminate traffic areas, and assist drivers. Due to the complexity of roads and traffic conditions, the functional diversity of high-resolution pixel LEDs headlamps and traffic safety has come into question and is the subject of in-depth research conducted by car manufacturers and regulators. We summarize the current possible functions of high-resolution pixel LED headlamps and analyze ways in which they could be improved. This paper also discusses the prospect of new technologies in the future.

The flipped classroom, as an active learning model, has given remarkable results in several areas in the university teaching; however, its execution is still able to improve. This research shows the implementation and improvement of the flipped classroom model in the course of Pavements. It evaluates their influence on the students’ final grades and their learning experience. Three groups of students participated in this study, who enrolled in the course of Pavements in the Civil Engineering. Group A took the course with the traditional model, while Group B took it with a flipped classroom, and Group C experienced it with a reinforced flipped model. Groups did the course the subject in 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively. Results show that even though with the flipped classroom models, the finals grades did not increase compared to the scores of the traditional model; however, it improved their learning experience. The students were more satisfied with the method; they even asked for fewer modifications than they did in the traditional model. This research shows that adding little academic things to the course, it would greatly influence their students' opinion.

The professional skills are essential for engineering student along with conceptual knowledge. The main objective of this paper is to explore an innovative assessment practice that was implemented to enhance teaching and learning for an undergraduate student in Civil Engineering. The practice was developed to increase students’ engagement, and encourage collaboration and critical thinking to achieve sustainable learning. Emerging technology and e-tools were the key of improve this practice. The practice was evaluated through students’ performance during the semester, and through the analysis of student’s feedback, peer review and external feedback. Generally, the feedback demonstrated the effectiveness of this practice in improving students’ understanding of the subject area and their academic performance. The total satisfaction was more than 90% and showed students’ satisfaction with the pedagogy adopted. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ performance in both internal and external marks. The final exam average increased by 20% and the total average increased by 15.4 % from the previous semester. This paper highlights the importance of linking learning and assessment as a core part of the teaching and learning process.

The subject of this paper is the COVID-19 pandemic impact on nations and states branding. Nations branding is very important for their global position. That is why there are numerous specific ways for state branding: film industry, sports events, civil engineering ventures, cultural and public events, diplomacy, celebrities, public relations, tourism etc. In general, people know very little or nothing about individual nations and states, so sports and tourism, as globally popular advents, may represent extraordinary set for their promotion. Globalism is a process of whose activities no state or person is spared. It is followed with numerous advantages but with numerous menaces too. With one of them, the world is struggling these days – the COVID-19 pandemic. Sports events all around the world are postponed or canceled in an effort to stop the virus from spreading. Pandemic and counties lockdowns almost killed global tourism.

The chapter explores the development of Elastic 3D Spaces as a research group, its span of inquiry, along with developments to date, using old and new technologies, including stereoscopy and augmented and virtual reality. Elastic 3D Spaces alludes to the space in front of a screen where images appear when using stereo to create 3D, where objects pop out of the screen. The perception of depth stretches if the viewer can move, hence elastic space. The chapter explores art projects whilst positioning the subject area involving both arts and science researchers and explains the topics it covers. Elastic 3D Spaces is interested in comparisons between 3D experiences and stereo 3D experiences from projection to virtual reality.

The subject of this analysis is connected with the verification of the load capacity of the span structure taking into account the degree of corrosion of the railway viaduct components located at 41.446 km, on the railway line no. 301 of "Kotlarnia" SA Sand Mine built over the national road DK88 and railway tracks PKP-PLK near T. Kościuszki street in Zabrze The general condition of the structure with regard to the corrosion assessment of structural steel is presented in the paper. Static and strength calculations were carried out to determine the load capacity class, and as a result of the analysis it was found that the technical condition of the facility steel girders is suitable for repair.
