Abstract In this work, we develop a technique for performing system identification in typical pedestrian bridges, using routine equipment at a minimal configuration, and for cases where actual structural data are either sparse or absent. To this end, two pedestrian bridges were examined, modelled and finally instrumented so as to record their dynamic response under operational conditions. More specifically, the bridges were numerically modelled using the finite element method (FEM) according to what was deduced to be their current operating status, while rational assumptions were made with respect to uncertain structural properties. Next, results from field testing using a portable accelerometer unit were processed to produce response spectra that were used as input to a structural identification software program, which in turn yielded the excited natural frequencies and mode shapes of the bridges. The low level of discrepancy is given between analytical and experimental results, the latter are used for a final calibration of the numerical models.

Design structures to resist natural hazards is a vital issue to mitigate the impact of such threats. Earthquakes could lead to numerous injuries and infrastructure destruction. Specifically, when structures are not designed to resist seismic load.  This article presents dynamic analysis of four-story shear frame under moderate ground motion to determine the dynamic response. The proposed location of the considered frame is near Iraq-Iran border due to increase of seismic activities in last years. Structures in the considered seismic zone are essentially either residential or commercial buildings and not designed to resist seismic load, therefore structural system failure is probable. Simplified model is considered to determine response spectrum according to the International Building Code requirements. The algorithm of the analysis is developed using MATLAB® code to get mode shapes, response spectrum acceleration, maximum displacement, maximum shear forces, and modal participation mass at each story. The article develops design response spectra curve of Erbil city. Furthermore, the analysis results showed that first mode shape has more contribution than the other modes because higher percentage of the mass of the shear frame responds to the ground motion, and 88.53% of shear-frame mass is participating responds to the ground motion in the same mode

The aim of this paper is to study the effects of mistuning on fan flutter and to compare the prediction of two numerical models of different fidelity. The high fidelity model used here is a three-dimensional, whole assembly, time-accurate, viscous, finite-volume compressible flow solver. The Code used for this purpose is AU3D, written in Imperial College and validated for flutter computations over many years. To the best knowledge of authors, this is the first time such computations have been attempted. This is due to the fact that, such non-linear aeroelastic computations with mistuning require large amount of CPU time and cannot be performed routinely and consequently, faster (low fidelity) models are required for this task. Therefore, the second model used here is the aeroelastic fundamental mistuning model (FMM) and it based on an eigenvalue analysis of the linearized modal aeroelastic system with the aerodynamic matrix calculated from the aerodynamic influence coefficients. The influence coefficients required for this algorithm are obtained from the time domain non-linear Code by shaking one blade in the datum (tuned) frequency and mode. Once the influence coefficients have been obtained, the computations of aero damping require minimal amount of CPU time and many different mistuning patterns can be studied. The objectives of this work are to: 1. Compare the results between the two models and establish the capabilities/limitations of aeroelastic FMM, 2. Check if the introduction of mistuning would bring the experimental and computed flutter boundaries closer, 3. Establish a relationship between mistuning and damping. A rig wide-chord fan blade, typical of modern civil designs, was used as the benchmark geometry for this study. All the flutter analyses carried out in this paper are with frequency mistuning, but the possible consequences of mistuned mode shapes are briefly discussed at the end of this paper. Only the first family of modes (1F, first flap) is considered in this work. For the frequency mistuning analysis, the 1F frequency is varied around the annulus but the 1F mode shapes remain the same for all the blades. For the mode shape mistuning computations, an FE analysis of the whole assembly different mass blades is performed. The results of this work clearly show the importance of mistuning on flutter. It also demonstrates that when using rig test data for aeroelastic validation of CFD codes, the amount mistuning present must be known. Finally, it should be noted that the aim of this paper is the study of mistuning and not steady/unsteady validation of a CFD code and therefore minimal aerodynamic data are presented.

ABSTRACT Although carbonate ramps are ubiquitous in the geologic record, the impacts of oceanographic processes on their facies patterns are less well constrained than with other carbonate geomorphic forms such as isolated carbonate platforms. To better understand the role of physical and chemical oceanographic forces on geomorphic and sedimentologic variability of ramps, this study examines in-situ field measurements, remote-sensing data, and hydrodynamic modeling of the nearshore inner ramp of the modern northeastern Yucatán Shelf, Mexico. The results reveal how sediment production and accumulation are influenced by the complex interactions of the physical, chemical, and biological processes on the ramp. Upwelled, cool, nutrient-rich waters are transported westward across the ramp and concentrated along the shoreline by cold fronts (Nortes), westerly regional currents, and longshore currents. This influx supports a mix of both heterozoan and photozoan fauna and flora in the nearshore realm. Geomorphically, the nearshore parts of this ramp system in the study area include lagoon, barrier island, and shoreface environments, influenced by the mixed-energy (wave and tidal) setting. Persistent trade winds, episodic tropical depressions, and winter storms generate waves that propagate onto the shoreface. Extensive shore-parallel sand bodies (beach ridges and subaqueous dune fields) of the high-energy, wave-dominated upper shoreface and foreshore are composed of fine to coarse skeletal sand, lack mud, and include highly abraded, broken and bored grains. The large shallow lagoon is mixed-energy: wave-dominated near the inlet, it transitions to tide-dominated in the more protected central and eastern regions. Lagoon sediment consists of Halimeda-rich muddy gravel and sand. Hydrodynamic forces are especially strong where bathymetry focuses water flow, as occurs along a promontory and at the lagoon inlet, and can form subaqueous dunes. Explicit comparison among numerical models of conceptual shorefaces in which variables are altered and isolated systematically demonstrates the influences of the winds, waves, tides, and currents on hydrodynamics across a broad spectrum of settings (e.g., increased tidal range, differing wind and wave conditions). Results quantify how sediment transport patterns are determined by wave height and direction relative to the shoreface, but tidal forces locally control geomorphic and sedimentologic character. Similarly, the physical oceanographic processes acting throughout the year (e.g., daily tides, episodic winter Nortes, and persistent easterly winds and waves) have more impact on geomorphology and sedimentology of comparable nearshore systems than intense, but infrequent, hurricanes. Overall, this study provides perspectives on how upwelling, nutrient levels, and hydrodynamics influence the varied sedimentologic and geomorphic character of the nearshore areas of this high-energy carbonate ramp system. These results also provide for more accurate and realistic conceptual models of the depositional variability for a spectrum of modern and ancient ramp systems.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) strategies are aimed at the assessment of structural performance, using data acquired by sensing systems. Among the different available approaches, vibration-based methods - involving the automation of the modal parameter estimation (MPE) and modal tracking (MT) procedures - are receiving increasing attention. In the context of vibration-based monitoring, this paper presents an automated procedure of modal identification in operational conditions. The presented algorithms can be used to effectively manage the results obtained by any parametric identification method that involves the construction and the interpretation of stabilization diagrams. The implemented approach introduces improvements related to both the MPE and the MT tasks. The MPE procedure consists of three key steps aimed at: (1) filtering a high number of spurious poles in the stabilization diagram; (2) clustering the remaining poles that share same characteristics in term of modal parameters; (3) improving the accuracy of the modal parameter estimates. In the MT procedure the use of a simple statistical approach to define adaptive thresholds together with continuously updated dynamic reference list guarantee an efficient tracking of the most representative structural modes. The advantages obtained through the proposed procedures are exemplified using data continuously collected on the historic masonry tower of San Gottardo in Corte, located in the centre of Milan, Italy. In addition, the ability of the automated algorithms to identify contributions inherent to different vibration modes, even if they are characterized by closely-spaced frequencies and a low discriminant between mode shapes, will be described in details.

The potential of intentional mistuning to reduce the maximum forced response is analyzed within the development of an axial turbine blisk for ship diesel engine turbocharger applications. The basic idea of the approach is to provide an increased aerodynamic damping level for particular engine order excitations and mode shapes without any significant distortions of the aerodynamic performance. The mistuning pattern intended to yield a mitigation of the forced response is derived from an optimization study applying genetic algorithms. Two blisk prototypes have been manufactured a first one with and another one without employing intentional mistuning. Hence, the differences regarding the real mistuning and other modal properties can be experimentally determined and evaluated as well. In addition, the experimental data basis allows for updating structural models which are well suited to compute the forced response under operational conditions. In this way, the real benefit achieved with the application of intentional mistuning is demonstrated.

Abstract Bayesian FFT algorithm is a popular method to identify modal parameters, e.g., modal frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes, of civil structures under operational conditions. It is efficient and provides the identification uncertainty in terms of posterior distribution. However, in utilizing the Bayesian FFT algorithm, it is tedious to manually select frequency bands and initial frequencies. This step requires professional knowledge and costs most of time, which prevents the automation of Bayesian FFT algorithm. Regarding the band selection as an object detection problem, we design a band selection network based on the RetinaNet to automatically select frequency bands and a peak prediction network to predict the initial frequencies. The designed networks are trained using the singular value spectrum of measured ambient vibration data and verified by various data sets. It can achieve the human accuracy with much less operation time, and thus provides a corner stone for the automation of Bayesian FFT algorithm.

This paper presents field tests performed on a slab-on-girder pre-stressed concrete bridge. The bridge was tested under static loading, crawling loading, and dynamic loading. A full three-dimensional finite element prediction under both static and dynamic loadings was carried out and the results were compared with the field measurements. While acoustic emission (AE) monitoring of bridge structures is not a new vista, the method has not been fully exploited in bridge monitoring. Though numerous quantitative methods have been proposed, they have not yet developed to be useful for actual field tests of bridges. Therefore, in this study, an attempt was made to use the intensity analysis technique for damage quantification using the AE method.

This study explores the average flow field inside and around stocked Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) fish cages. Laboratory tests and field measurements were conducted to study flow patterns around and through fish cages and the effect of fish on the water flow. Currents were measured around an empty and a stocked fish cage in a fjord to verify the results obtained from laboratory tests without fish and to study the effects of fish swimming in the cage. Fluorescein, a nontoxic, fluorescent dye, was released inside a stocked fish cage for visualization of three-dimensional flow patterns inside the cage. Atlantic salmon tend to form a torus shaped school and swim in a circular path, following the net during the daytime. Current measurements around an empty and a stocked fish cage show a strong influence of fish swimming in this circular pattern: while most of the oncoming water mass passes through the empty cage, significantly more water is pushed around the stocked fish cage. Dye experiments show that surface water inside stocked fish cages converges toward the center, where it sinks and spreads out of the cage at the depth of maximum biomass. In order to achieve a circular motion, fish must accelerate toward the center of the cage. This inward-directed force must be balanced by an outward force that pushes the water out of the cage, resulting in a low pressure area in the center of the rotational motion of the fish. Thus, water is pulled from above and below the fish swimming depth. Laboratory tests with empty cages agree well with field measurements around empty fish cages, and give a good starting point for further laboratory tests including the effect of fish-induced currents inside the cage to document the details of the flow patterns inside and adjacent to stocked fish cages. The results of such experiments can be used as benchmarks for numerical models to simulate the water flow in and around net pens, and model the oxygen supply and the spreading of wastes in the near wake of stocked fish farms.

Abstract A systematic research program was undertaken with the objective of developing quantitative geotechnical parameters to support soil-pipe interaction assessment for buried pipelines in muskeg. For this purpose, a field geotechnical investigation program comprising cone penetration testing (SCPT) with shear wave velocity (Vs) measurements, electronic field vane shear testing (eVST), full-flow ball penetration testing (BPT), and pressuremeter testing (PMT), along with fixed-piston tube soil sampling was undertaken in a muskeg soil terrain. The data from field testing were initially interpreted to obtain typical stiffness and strength parameters for the subject soils. These parameters were then used to numerically simulate pressuremeter tests and the results were compared with those obtained from field pressuremeter testing; the intent was to calibrate a suitable constitutive model to represent the muskeg soil mass. These ascalibrated constitutive model was then applied on numerical models developed to simulate buried pipelines in muskeg soil subject to relative lateral ground movements. The work is aimed at developing a framework to generate soil restraint versus relative ground displacement relations (“soil springs”) to assess soil-pipe interaction of pipelines buried in muskeg soils. Initial results from the research are presented herein, with a comparison made between soil springs developed from numerical analyses and those generated from current practice guidelines.

The dynamic behaviour of a WOR 60 is investigated using three dimensional hydroelasticity theory. Global structural responses (e.g. stresses) in waves are obtained corresponding to the upright as well as to the more realistic heeled sailing configurations, revealing the connection between the ballast keel and the hull as being a critical area of the structure. For the "dry hull" analysis, a global finite element model has been developed, incorporating the hull and deck shell, the internal structure, the ballast keel and the rig together with rigging loads. The modular nature of the model has been used to assess the relative influence of each of the aforementioned components upon the required characteristic dynamic properties (e.g. natural frequencies and principal mode shapes). Regarding the "wet hull" analysis, a three dimensional Green's function technique, using pulsating sources distributed over the wetted surface, provides a numerical solution to the case of the yacht sailing in regular waves at arbitrary heading. Principal coordinates for the rigid body motions and flexible distortions of interest are evaluated and the latter are used to obtain the dynamic stresses in waves using modal summation. This paper will describe the modelling techniques used and discuss the applicability / limitations of hydroelasticity theory regarding this type of structures in the light of the results obtained for the upright and heeled operational conditions, as well as from the point of view of design aspects such as "L" and "T" keel configurations. The ABS design criteria will provide a practical reference for comparing the results from the dynamic analysis.
