Our purpose is to challenge the dominant meaning of professional management in family business research and to suggest an extended understanding of the concept. Based on a review of selected literature on professional management and with insights from cultural theory and symbolic interactionism, we draw on interpretive case research to argue that professional family business management rests on two competencies, formal and cultural, of which only the former is explicitly recognized in current family business literature. We elaborate on the meanings and implications of cultural competence and argue that without it a CEO of a family business is likely to work less effectively, no matter how good the formal qualifications and irrespective of family membership.

Bridge construction projects are associated with uncertainties partly due to sequencing issues, logistics, interactions, and resource constraints. Their construction is mostly cyclic and repetitive, yet complex, requiring innovative approaches to cope with its management. Construction projects planners seek methods to enable them to schedule bridge construction projects in consideration of these constraining factors. The main objective of this research is to develop a concept of a simulation-based modeling approach. It aimed to decide which data in real systems are important for the modeling of an operation, and in which way they must be gathered to help planners approach a proper simulation-based schedule. A case study project based in New Zealand was selected for this paper. It focuses on developing a resource-based model of bridge construction using a launching-girder construction method, taking into account the complex interactions among the project’s components. The discrete elements within the project and steps taken to develop a model are described in this paper. The study enhances knowledge on the applicability of simulation in repetitive construction operation, which in turn can provide more realistic models for scheduling progress.

Abstract Objective Electronic medical record (EMR) implementation at centers caring for homeless people is constrained by limited resources and the increased disease burden of the patient population. Few informatics articles address this issue. This report describes Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program’s migration to new EMR software without loss of unique care elements and processes. Materials and methods Workflows for clinical and operational functions were analyzed and modeled, focusing particularly on resource constraints and comorbidities. Workflows were optimized, standardized, and validated before go-live by user groups who provided design input. Software tools were configured to support optimized workflows. Customization was minimal. Training used the optimized configuration in a live training environment allowing users to learn and use the software before go-live. Results Implementation was rapidly accomplished over 6 months. Productivity was reduced at most minimally over the initial 3 months. During the first full year, quality indicator levels were maintained. Keys to success were completing before go-live workflow analysis, workflow mapping, building of documentation templates, creation of screen shot guides, role-based phased training, and standardization of processes. Change management strategies were valuable. The early availability of a configured training environment was essential. With this methodology, the software tools were chosen and workflows optimized that addressed the challenges unique to caring for homeless people. Conclusions Successful implementation of an EMR to care for homeless people was achieved through detailed workflow analysis, optimizing and standardizing workflows, configuring software, and initiating training all well before go-live. This approach was particularly suitable for a homeless population.

This study aims to utilize the fuzzy analytical/network process (FAHP/FANP) and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) approach to recognize the influential indicators of sport centre business management in Taipei city’s sports centre. Twenty-three of sports centres with six-dimensions were identified from the literature review and interview with twelve experts (academic and practical experience). By considering the interrelationships among the indices, DEMATEL was used to deal with the importance and causal relationships among the evaluation indices of sports centre. Then, we employ the FAHP/FANP to determine the weight of each management criterion. Our empirical results provide two main insights: first, sports centre business management strategies comprise six-dimensions and 23 indexes; second, the FANP analysis shows that the six key factors are (in order of priority) service price, site conditions, operations management, traffic conditions, sports products, and staff quality. This study uses the FANP and DEMATEL along with mathematical computing in order to provide sports centre managers with a reliable decision-making reference and to assist them in formulating the most effective business strategy possible.
