Principles for sharing economy formation in the digital society

Subject. The article addresses economic relations that are formed in various areas of economic application of digital platforms. The target of the research is the modern economy of digital platforms across different economic activities. Objectives. The aim is to systematize principles for share economy formation in the context of the digital society development. Methods. We employ general scientific methods of research. Results. The study shows that the development of digital platforms is one of the most important trends in the development of the modern economy. We classified certain characteristic features of modern digital platforms, analyzed principles for their creation. The paper emphasizes that the network effects achieved through the use of digital platforms are an important factor in the development of the share economy. The network effect describes the impact of the number of the platform users on the value created for each of them. The paper also considers differences in the organization of traditional economy companies and companies that are based on the digital platform model, reveals specifics of changes in socio-economic systems caused by the development of digital platforms, systematizes principles of the sharing economy formation in the context of the digital society development. Conclusions. The analyzed principles for sharing economy development on the basis of digital platforms can be applied to create models for the purpose of forecasting the transformation of economic activity in the post-industrial society.

RESUMO:Este artigo trata dos impactos das plataformas digitais no Direito do Trabalho, tomando como exemplo sintomático o padrão da plataforma Uber. Inicia discutindo o cenário da economia digital e suas transformações nos modos de organizar a atividade empresarial, caracterizando a disrupção destas tecnologias e examinando criticamente se tais inovações situam-se realmente no discurso de economia do compartilhamento. Adiante, aborda as condições fáticas das plataformas de trabalho, questionando a dimensão formal-jurídica de liberdade e a condição econômica de hipossuficiência. Examina o caso da Uber como paradigma do modelo de organização empresarial desta economia digital e a situação dos seus motoristas tidos como parceiros para, ao final, pontuar algumas conclusões a cerca da necessidade do Direito Trabalho estar conectado com essas novas relações sociaisABSTRACT:This article deals with the impact of digital platforms in Labor Law, taking as a symptomatic example the standards of the Uber platform. It begins by discussing the the digital economy scenario and its transformations in the way business activity organize itself, characterizing the disruption of these technologies and critically examining whether such innovations are really part of the sharing economy speech. Hereinafter, it addresses the factual conditions of work platforms, questioning the formal-legal dimension of freedom and the economic condition of hypo-sufficiency. It examines the case of Uber as a paradigm of a business model organization in the digital economy and the situation of its drivers, taken as partners in order to, in the end of it, point some conclusions about the need of Labor Law to be connected with these new social relationships.

The virtualization of socio-economic processes is expressed in the development of various types of economic activities in the Internet computer network, acting as the infrastructure of the modern economic system, a catalyst for globalization processes, and the main means of communication between computers, information systems of various purposes and complexity, and people. The study of the theoretical and methodological problem of digital economy virtualization processes is due to the importance of determining the structure of virtualization as a set of interconnected industries, consumption, markets, and finance on the Internet. The elements of the system combine the types of economic activities, which include entrepreneurship on the Internet, as well as information and intellectual activities. The study of this problem was carried out using empirical methods of cognition of the structure of the system analysis of digital economy virtualization processes, along with the use of scientometric methods for reviewing the methodology of the educational process for training digital economy personnel and improving their qualifications as a precursor to the design of production processes, consumption, market and financial processes occurring in a digital environment. The conducted studies make it possible to obtain scientific results in the field of structuring the socio-economic processes of virtualization, namely: a dichotomy of virtualization processes in the digital economy is proposed, taking into account the factor of education; the positive and negative consequences of virtualization for the economy and society as a whole are identified. It was concluded in the course of the study that the system analysis of digital economy virtualization processes should be based on the development of the educational component and reflect the environment of virtualization processes, including digital platforms, which, first, form the global infrastructure of the world economy; second, they contribute to the development of entrepreneurship; third, they provide production, consumer, market and financial functions and corporate governance; fourth, they are a source of network externalities that create new social and economic problems. The prospect for further research is the development of a model for assessing the impact of the structure of virtualization processes on economic growth in the digital economy.

Effects of large hi-tech companies’ activity are still too hard to witness and to forecast. It is, however, obvious now that not only informa- tion, but also infringements of antimonopoly legislation are spreading at the speed of sound. Alternative lending is one of the largest segments of the financial technology market in the world which is represented by online platforms specializing in organizing the lending process. The purpose of the article is to assess the impact of key factors on the dynamics of venture capital investments in alternative lending platforms. The objectives of this study are to define the concept of alternative lending, build an econometric model to analyze the factors of development of alternative lending in the world, and interpret the results from the point of view of the prospects for the development of alternative lending. Alternative lending has been defined as a segment of the fintech market that can be characterized as parallel financing of economic activities based on digital platforms through the provision of syndicated loans after decentralized business models. To test the hypotheses of the study, an econometric model was built on the analysis of 5,234 investment transactions completed in the period from 2013 to 2019 in 35 countries of the world and included in the CrunchBase database. According to the model, such factors as the availability of venture capital, the number of workforce, the digital competitiveness of the economy (the factor of future readiness), and the availability of credit information have a significant impact on the dynamics of direct and venture capital investments in alternative lending companies. The obtained results can be considered when improving the national strategy for regulating the alternative lending market, which is especially important for Russia, where the segment of alternative lending is at the stage of stagnation.

The review of scholarly literature, analytical centers and international organizations reports evidence the growing role of digital platforms in transformation of business models of the past, shaping major trends in the digital economy development and relationships with various economic actors. However, the use of big data and the network effect poses serious risks to the existence of non-digital companies enhancing the relevance of the research on the factors and methods of platform influence upon the transformation of economic relations in Ukraine. The research methodology employed such general scientific methods as analysis and synthesis, analogy, logical and systemic approaches, and grouping. The study reveals the essence of digital platforms as the disruptors of classic business models. The key factors that allow digital platforms to capture market niches quickly are identified. Among them are active use of big data, algorithm development, network effects, cash flow from small transactions, evasion of rules and conditions, elimination of redundant actions and mediation, impeccable customer experience and the network leverage effect. The prerequisite for the platform transformational success is generating a new value to customers through financial savings, new experience and opportunities to participate in the creation of personal products and services. The study provides insights on the nature, structure, characteristics and models of digital platform ecosystems. It is argued that the most successful platforms build ecosystems that bring together companies, capital, communities, networks, people, data analysis and technology to create “disruptive” business models that might be a potential threat to the “survival” of non-digital businesses and the source of imbalance to the established economic order. Thus, a factor of “creative destruction” contributes to the emergence of new sources of economic growth. The complexity of identifying the effect from the development of digital platforms ecosystems offers implications for setting further research areas.

Digital platforms operate in multisided markets providing services through the internet to two or more distinct groups of users, between which there are indirect network effects. Direct networks effects are frequently present within each group. Therefore, online platforms usually present both direct network effects, between individual members of the same group, and indirect network effects, between members of distinct groups. Network effects may simultaneously reduce competition leading to a greater concentration and strengthening entry barriers, on the one hand, and put forward significant efficiencies on the other. This article examines some keys aspects related to the impact of network effects on the assessment of mergers in two-sided markets, taking account of the recent practice of the Commission.

That paper is motivated by the fact that the development of a joint consumption economy is one of the most significant trends in the modern economy. The object of the study is an array of publications indexed in Scopus and devoted to the analysis of the patterns of development a joint consumption economy (sharing economy) for the period from 2000 to 2019. The study shows a dynamic growth of the number of the publications describing the impact of new digital technologies and digital on-line technological platforms based on the Internet on fundamental changes in the field of individual consumption of households. The analysis of the content of publications of Russian and foreign authors indexed in Scopus database and Russian national bibliographic database (2000-2019) allowed the authors to identify at least the six key areas of modern research of a joint consumption economy. The paper considers each of the six key areas of a joint consumption economy. Authors has predicted the emergence of new areas of research of a joint consumption economy as new trends emerge in the field of individual consumption of modern households in the context of the constant progress of digital technologies.

The purpose of the proposed paper is to study the specific factors shaping the benefits of information platforms as an innovative institutional form and model of doing business. Active dissemination of the business model of online platforms radically transforms the competitive landscape of the market environment. The task of determining the sources and mechanisms for studying the changes that are taking place is being updated. New areas of competition include competition between hierarchical and network structures, between global «structuring» platforms, competition in dominant platform ecosystems, the interaction between platforms operating in competitive markets, competition between organizers and users, and between platform users. The impact of platforming on cross-industry, regional and international competition is determined. The sources of competitive advantages of platforms are investigated. These include reliance on data as the main factor of production, changing the cost structure of entering the market; the possibility of building large-scale networks, niche specialization, combining the effects of increasing the scale of production and demand, multihoming, multi productivity, network effects.

The author undertakes an attempt to analyze the impact of the COVID‑19 pandemic on the phenomenon of the sharing economy and the viability of this business model in force majeure circumstances. The sharing economy is a business model of the digital economy, born by the fourth industrial revolution during the Great Recession of 2008 and developing in the context of the unprecedented economic crisis of 2020, when the impact of the coronavirus pandemic simultaneously collapsed production, financial markets and consumer demand for goods and services, and the task of “conscious consumption” – to spend money correctly and reduce costs – became vital. The concept does not focus on ownership but rather on the sharing of assets and resources. A predictive construct is given: the sharing economy is not so much the introduction of new technologies to implement the world-old idea of renting on digital platforms, but a new paradigm of production and consumption and as such leads to a circular economy, causes systemic changes that form qualitatively new principles of business organization, the economy and society as a whole. The study concluded that the sharing model has proven its viability not only in a period of stable economic development, but also in a contemporary crisis, which is caused by the COVID‑19 pandemic. Moreover, it was during this period of force majeure that the sharing economy model showed its importance both in everyday life and in business. This allows us to conclude about the further growth of the sharing economy, the creation of new services – both in spite of and thanks to the COVID‑19 pandemic.

Mobile application innovation diffusion can be used to enhance the reputation and competitiveness of Internet enterprises. However, few works have explored the process of mobile application innovation diffusion from the individual perspective. Therefore, this paper employs multi-agent methods to simulate the innovation diffusion of mobile applications from the perspective of social networks. Specifically, we combine psychology, sociology, game theory and network effect theory to model user behaviors of adoption and rejection decisions for mobile applications. The multi-agent model was built in Anylogic 8 to simulate the communication and interaction between individual users. Then, this paper discusses the evolution of decision-making of social network user groups with different network structures and network effects. We also investigate the impact of different firms’ promotion on innovation diffusion. Our findings suggest firms could make better strategies and achieve better diffusion effects from mobile applications.
