This book presents a task-based instructional framework for communicative language teaching. The first seven chapters focus on task-based instruction, and the remaining two chapters deal with assessment. Each chapter begins with a brief review, goes on to the topic of discussion, and ends with a summary. Two sections follow each chapter. In “Gaining Greater Perspectives,” Lee recommends further readings for in-depth reflection of the topic of the chapter. The “Application Activities” section contains a number of exercises to put into practice the concepts discussed in the chapter.

Innovation in language education, just as in any other discipline, is connected with changes whose primary goal is to make the process of language learning/language teaching more efficient. Examples of such innovations include, for instance, task based instruction, computer assisted language learning or the use of portfolio as a means of assessment.Innovation implies a new, qualitatively different perception of the language learning/ language teaching process, roles of teachers and learners, use of materials etc., hence it is believed to constitute a challenge for language teachers and their professionalism. The present article is an attempt to answer the question whether and to what extent the language teaching profession is actually prepared to deal with innovation.

Language teachers can easily get caught up in the mechanics and outcome-based instruction of language teaching. Too often, the pedagogic relationship between the language teacher and learner are defined according to the narrowly defined discourse and task-based nature of the learning task designed for language acquisition. Pushing back the boundaries on this relationship and opening up opportunities for self-expression and self exploration through an introductory task termed Self Maps helps teachers and students to move beyond formulaic introductory exchanges and express themselves more deeply in their unique and singular individuality.

Kata Kunci: perpustakaan, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, belajar mandiri, Self Access Center AbstractThe ultimate goal of learning English is the ability to use the target language. Unfortunately, formal education tends to use tradisional approach which focuses more on the language form instead of language use. This is triggered not only by the large class size but also by the limited time allocated for learning process in the class. In tertiary level where students are expected to be more independent in their learning, this problem should have been able to be solved by increasing the role and service of university library which supports self-directed independent learning. Library which can fulfill its functions well will be able to create the athmosphere of independent learning that assist learning process in the class. In addition, the establishment of a Self Access Center (SAC) in the library which enable students to learn according to their own needs and abilities will significantly increase students’ interest and motivation to learn independently so that the goal of learning English can be accomplished. Keywords: library, English learning, self-directed independent learning, Self Access Center
