Gretchen Is: On Your Facebook Profile, Analyzing the Sociolinguistics of Your Status Message

Some Facebook status messages get dozens of comments and "likes", while others are not interacted with at all. But is this social success just good luck, or are there certain features that can allow us to predict whether a status will be popular or not? This presentation examines a cross‐section of authentic Facebook status messages in an attempt to figure out what makes a status socially successful. Three types of status message are identified: the narcissistic status, the informative status, and the shared‐reference status. The narcissistic status is the stereotypical expression of emotion or mundane activity, where the audience is less important, and consequently less engaged, than the author. The informative status provides basic information about the user's current location or activity, which can allow him or her to be more easily contacted by friends, but does not tend to inspire much conversation. However, it is the shared‐reference status, which refers to an experience that the author shares with a relatively small group of friends, that inspires the greatest levels of dialogue in the form of comments and "likes." Further details to be discussed include the varieties of shared‐reference status and the relation of Facebook statuses to external perception of them and to real‐life rules of social interaction.

In Natural Sciences (IPA) there are three aspects of learning, they arenatural sciences as product, process, and strengthening attitudes. This natural sciences learning classification found relevance with Islamic education learning in the aspect of fiqh, theseare fiqh as a product and fiqh as a process. The types of humanistlearning arelearning other than as a product, because this learning is not just transfer of knowledge without rationality, so that the lesson is not able to take part in the real life of humanity. In the implementation, humanist learning can be carried out using several scientific approaches such as problem based learning, discovery learning, social interaction, role playing, team research, and other forms that are oriented to students involvementdirectly.

In small-group problem-based learning (PBL), students work cooperatively to solve complex, real-world problems. The problems lead the students to learn basic concepts rather than being presented as applications of concepts they have already learned. The goals are for students to learn and be able to apply the disciplinary content, develop critical thinking abilities, and acquire skills of life-long learning, communication, and team building. PBL has been widely used in recent years in medical and related areas of professional education. In those settings each small group typically has its own faculty facilitator. PBL can be successfully adapted for teaching undergraduate and graduate basic science students, in part by having multiple groups meet in one room with a roving facilitator. This report describes a two-semester PBL sequence in organ-systems physiology. To keep the interest of a diverse group of seniors and graduate students, several types of problems were used: clinical, laboratory research-based, real-life scenarios, and published research articles. The majority of students have responded enthusiastically.

Games have received increased scholarly attention due to the economic value they generate. Yet, some studies still conceptualize games as ‘‘virtual’’ realms that are theoretically distinct from ‘‘real world’’ experiences. Based on an ethnographic investigation of two online, text-based gaming environments, this study analyzes dynamics such as technical acculturation, access to technical knowledge, and opportunities for self-expression by studying social interaction that occurred in non-revenue-generating games. Frameworks that focus on dynamics such as in-game conversation in broader game-centric domains or ecologies should be considered to accommodate a wider variety of gaming forms and related interdisciplinary research questions. Different games have different consequences, and it is important to understand the varying consequential contexts that games afford. Whether or not the consequences may be measured economically, it is nevertheless important to consider how social interactions may complicate forms of self-expression in ways that impact the human spirit.

This study compares males and females perception of the effect of social media on their social interaction to understand the difference between both genders. The study follows a mixed-method methodology using a questionnaire with closed-ended items and open-ended questions. Responses to the questionnaire are collected form 207 male and female students from a public university in Saudi Arabia. In general, the results of the questionnaire are insignificant which indicate that there are no differences between both genders. However, the results of the open-ended questions show that females have a negative view of the effect of social media on human relations while males have a positive point of view. However, both genders have a positive point of view regarding balancing between friends and family in real life and virtual world through time management.

Abstract The paraleucobryoid Campylopus complex consists of a small group of Andean species distinguished by a leaf cross section identical to that of Paraleucobryum. The complex differs from Paraleucobryum only in having cygneous rather than erect setae and capsule stomata absent rather than present. Here we treat four species, only two of which have previously been recognized in Campylopus. They are C. albidovirens Herzog, C. pittieri R.S.Williams, C. densifolius (Thér.) B.H.Allen & W.R.Buck, comb. nov. and C. ochyriorum B.H.Allen & W.R.Buck, sp. nov. A key is given to the four species; the two nomenclatural novelties are described in detail and illustrated.

Microlepidogaster bahiensis Miranda-Ribeiro (1918), assigned to Parotocinclus Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889, by Garavello (1977), was described in a short and uninformative way which does not allow for its distinction from other species of Parotocinclus; besides, the two syntypes of the species are regarded as lost. For these reasons a neotype is herein designated and a detailed description of the species is presented based on topotypes. The species is characterized by the combination of the following features: scapular bridge almost completely exposed ventrally, arrector fossae, when present, small or very reduced; abdomen covered by 5–7 wide lateral plates on each side and very small platelets in between, leaving abundant naked areas surrounding them; a small group of larger plates in front of anus; caudal peduncle ellipsoid in cross section; total plates in median series 21–23; longitudinal series with 23–26 plates; 18–29 teeth on premaxillary and 12–24 on dentary; it can also be distinguished by its characteristic caudal-fin color pattern. Features that allow us to assign the species to Parotocinclus and a hypothesis about its relationships with other species of the genus are also presented.

<p>The aim of this study was to analyze the organization of on-task behavior in the classroom. Four observational methodology techniques—T-pattern detection, lag sequential analysis, trend analysis, and polar coordinate analysis—were used to study the organization of on-task and off-task behavioral patterns during class time in a primary school setting. The specific objective was to detect and explore relationships between on-task behavior and different social interaction categories in relation to the actual distribution of activities in a real-life classroom setting. The study was conducted using the behavioral observation system for social interaction SOC-IS and the software programs Theme (version 6, Edu), SDIS-GSEQ (version 4.1.2), HOISAN (version 1.6), and STATGRAPHICS (version 6). We describe the results obtained for the four techniques and discuss the methodological implications of combining complementary techniques in a single study.</p>

Just as with most other communication breakthroughs before it, the initial media and popular reaction to the Internet has been largely negative, if not apocalyptic. For example, it has been described as “awash in pornography”, and more recently as making people “sad and lonely.” Yet, counter to the initial and widely publi cized claim that Internet use causes depression and social isolation, the body of ev idence (even in the initial study on which the claim was based) is mainly to the con trary. More than this, however, it is argued that like the telephone and television before it, the Internet by itself is not a main effect cause of anything, and that psy chology must move beyond this notion to an informed analysis of how social iden tity, social interaction, and relationship formation may be different on the Internet than in real life. Four major differences and their implications for self and identity, social interaction, and relationships are identified: one's greater anonymity, the greatly reduced importance of physical appearance and physical distance as “gating features” to relationship development, and one's greater control over the time and pace of interactions. Existing research is reviewed along these lines and some promising directions for future research are described.
