To improve the attractiveness of the undergraduate course of Soil Mechanics at Polytechnique Montreal, a new approach relying on the study of the Teton Dam failure from a forensic point of view was introduced in 2012. A course evaluation performed at the end of the session demonstrated that the case study was very interesting to sensitize the students to technical and non-technical aspects, but that the formula was not ideal for active learning. Indeed, the lack of hindsight was not adequate to warranty an active participation of all students. As a consequence, a new version of the case study based on team projects is under development. The paper presents the new case study approach, the methodology and the tools under development to help the students with the case study and finally concludes with the implication of the case study in the formation of future engineers.

Abstract: What is a case study and what is it good for? In this article, we review dominant approaches to case study research and point out their limitations. Next, we propose a new approach - the comparative case study approach - that attends simultaneously to global, national, and local dimensions of case-based research. We contend that new approaches are necessitated by conceptual shifts in the social sciences, specifically in relation to culture, context, space, place, and comparison itself.

An ethnographic case study approach to understanding women’s actions and reactions to husbands’ emigration—or potential emigration—offers a distinct set of challenges to a U.S.-based researcher.  International migration research in a foreign context likely offers challenges in language, culture, lifestyle, as well as potential gender norm impediments. A mixed methods approach contributed to successfully overcoming barriers through an array of research methods, strategies, and tactics, as well as practicing flexibility in data gathering methods. Even this researcher’s influence on the research was minimized and alleviated, to a degree, through ascertaining common ground with many of the women. Research with the women of San Juan Guelavía, Oaxaca, Mexico offered numerous and constant challenges, each overcome with ensuing rewards.
