The University of Ottawa Faculty of Engineering is home to multiple rapid prototyping facilities and entrepreneurship spaces. These include a makerspace, a machine shop and a design space for any student to use free of charge. First- and second-year students also take courses in the Makerlab, a sister facility to the Makerspace, which introduces them to collaborative project-based learning, engineering problem-solving and prototyping in a cornerstone design course. Maker communities and makerspaces are known to be inclusive, welcoming and low-risk, high-reward environments. The objective of this paper is twofold: the first is to understand how strongly engineering students feel included in the making and engineering communities how those feelings vary as a function of different factors, and the second is to see if intervention through engineering design improves inclusivity. This analysis was done with Kruskal-Wallis tests. Factors considered were gender, year of study, program of study and country of origin. A baseline test was done at the beginning of the semester with the students using two different perceived group inclusion tools. A second test was then done at the end of the semester to determine if feelings of inclusion had changed.

First- and second-year students also take courses in the Makerlab, a sister facility to the Makerspace, that introduces them to collaborative project-based learning, engineering problem-solving and prototyping in a cornerstone design course. Each three-hour weekly lab has a teaching assistant (TA), typically a graduate student, and a project manager (PM), typically an undergraduate student who has taken the course previously. They are responsible for teaching the lab content and guiding the students through their design process. Since design courses are weighted heavily toward projects and labs, this evidence-based practice paper is part of a study that has the goal of understanding, via student evaluations, the impact of TA and PM training on their performance. This paper presents an analysis of the impact of TA and PM training, based on the students’ evaluation of their TA’s and PM’s performance. Factors considered were the amount of training received by the TAs and PMs, the type of training and the satisfaction of the students. The students were surveyed to gauge their satisfaction with the quality of their TAs and PMs, and the survey results were compared with a number of outcomes.

The planning preparation of an activity is highly recommended in Islamic perspective. The completion of university’s study program does not make the university complete its planning task. The existence of alumni as a necessity of the educational process has an important position and role in Islamic civilization and requires seriousness in planning its development. Currently, exploring concepts from an Islamic perspective is still limited, especially in terms of alumni development. The purpose of this study is to describe the concept of alumni in an Islamic perspective and to explain the planning of alumni development in the university. This study uses a qualitative approach with library research. The results of this study are (1) the term ‘alumni’ in the Islamic perspective refers to a monumental event and (2) alumni development planning can use the POAC (planning, organizing, actuating, controlling) concept by George Robert Terry where the stages of the flow start from planning, then organizing, then mobilizing and finally monitoring. After knowing the role of alumni is very strategic, it is hoped that alumni development planning in the future will be managed properly and seriously.

This study adopts a service quality approach and importance performance analysis (IPA) applied to tertiary institutions, to analyze how big the role of service in tertiary institutions (lecturers and employees) is towards students who in certain contexts are valued as consumers. This research was conducted at the University of Flores management study program, with 50 samples (stratified random sampling). Test the suitability and accuracy of the data by conducting validity and reliability tests, data analysis using the SERVQUAL and IPA methods by assessing physical evidence, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy on the basis of GAP value considerations and priority plots using Cartesian Diagrams. The results showed the Management study program needs to improve service priority (GAP) whose value exceeds -0.5 and low priority value in the plot diagram.

With the continued climate crisis, there is increasing recognition for the important of sustainabilityeducation in engineering. At the University of Calgary, we are developing a program in Sustainable Systems Engineering to address this need. Systems thinking and sustainability are intrinsically linked, as in order to comprehend the wicked challenges of sustainability today, we must take a holistic, interconnected, systems approach. This paper outlines sustainability education literature, and our approach to program development. Overall, we hope to foster mindsets and develop engineering students who are able to fundamentally shift the discourse on sustainability engineering within industry, and critically reflect on the role of engineering itself.

Objective: The objective of this study was to access the perception of non-pharmacy health-care students on the role and contribution of pharmacists in to health-care delivery in Ghana. Furthermore, the influence of factors such as sex, program of study and frequency of interaction with pharmacists on this perception was determined. Methods: A structured questionnaire was designed and administered to 670 medical, optometry and nursing students of the University of Cape Coast, Ghana after a pilot study was conducted. Results: The students strongly agreed that the role of the pharmacist is dispensing drugs, collaborating with physicians to prescribe medications. The students also appreciated the contribution of pharmacists in helping to reduce adverse reactions to medications. The students, however, showed little appreciation of pharmacists carrying out research or physical examinations and helping to reduce cost to patients. There was no effect of sex on the perception of students, although the frequency of interaction with pharmacists influenced their perceptions Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that non-pharmacy health students appreciate certain roles and contributions of pharmacists to health-care.
