The paper undertakes the broadly understood perception of tourism space. The research aim is to present the topic in the context of Nowa Huta – the youngest quarter of Krakow (Poland). Empirical data was gathered on the basis of questionnaires distributed among 400 permanent and temporal residents of Krakow and the closest neighburhood of the city. The main hypothesis is related to the existence of differences in the perception of Nowa Huta according to the place of residence of respondents. On the basis of analysis of the empirical material it was proved that the majority of respondents are familiar with the quarter. In their opinion, Nowa Huta is presented as a dangerous, grey, and scary place. Positive perception of the quarter is typical mainly its residents. The results might be used to determine the directions of the future development of Nowa Huta to improve its image and become more attractive for tourists and residents. The results also prove the relationship between the familiarity of the place and its positive perception.

The article analyzes the activity of university lecturer and researcher and the need for special mechanisms providing its efficiency. The authors consider academic freedom as a parameter of the university’s environment and discuss the convention regulating the relationship between lecturers and university management. The factors of the destruction of this convention are analyzed. The dynamic model of the lecturers’ behavior is proposed and two scenarios for the future development ("teaching ratchet" and "academic ratchet") as well as the factors of choice between them are discussed. The empirical data on the development and current state of the Russian educational system is also taken into account.

Like in many other provinces, during the Habsburg period, the main point of orientation for Galicia was Vienna. This also applies to architecture and urban development. Galicia’s technical elite applied the theoretical and practical experience it gathered in Vienna to the towns and cities of this northeastern Crown land. Ignacy Drexler, born in 1878 in the Austro-Hungarian Lemberg, was a representative of a new generation of engineers and architects who did not necessarily have to spend time in the imperial capital to earn their spurs. Increasingly, besides the more or less obligatory stay in Vienna, other European countries became points of reference. Drexler did not live to see the realization of important aspects of his comprehensive plan for the city, but his ideas and the data he compiled were indispensable for the future development of his hometown. They shape urban planning in Lviv to this day.

Sparked by recent scholarly interest in identifying the drivers or antecedents of employee engagement, this article examines the relationship between an employee’s perception of voice and his or her propensity to socially engage in the form of sharing advice. In this article, we conceptualize an employee’s perception of voice as multi-directional in nature. This is because, whether directed upward, downward, or laterally, employees will develop multiple perceptions of voice as they distinguish between their social exchanges across and within the various levels of the organization. Surveying the city workforce of Marietta, Georgia, we found a positive perception of voice is a key driver or antecedent to advice sharing across vertical boundaries with superiors and subordinates and across lateral boundaries with peers. Yet contrary to what the literature would suggest about the influence of superiors on subordinates, we found that low perceptions of upward voice (i.e., perceptions shaped by those at higher levels of the organization) did not influence an employee’s decision to share advice with his or her own subordinates or peers. This research shifts some much-needed attention toward advice sharing as a social manifestation of employee engagement and establishes the importance of assessing and managing an employee’s multiple perceptions of voice.

The research presented in this article adopts an urban sociology perspective to explore the relationship between spaces designed with biophilic principles and people’s pro-environmental values and behaviors. The research hypothesized that biophilic design and planning promote connectedness with nature and are positively related to pro-environmental and more sustainable values and behaviors. The contemporary city asserts the need for new paradigms and conceptual frameworks for reconfiguring the relationship between the urban environment and the natural environment. In order to understand whether biophilic design, planning, and policies can meet the global challenges regarding the future existence on earth of humans, focus groups were conducted to investigate how people’s relationship with the built-up space and the natural landscape is perceived, and to what extent the inclusion of nature and its patterns at various levels of urban planning meets people’s expectations. The results suggest that biophilic design and planning can be considered a useful paradigm to deal with the challenges that are posed by the city of the future, also in terms of sustainability, by reinterpreting and enhancing the human–nature relation in the urban context.

The world's growing cities are a critical fact of the 21st Century, and represent one of the greatest challenges to the future. By the year 2050 cities with populations over three million will be more than double; from 70 today to over 150. When knowledge is perhaps the most important factor in the future of city's economy, there is a growing interest in the concept of the "knowledge city". An acceptable definition of knowledge city might be it is not just a regular city. It is a growing space of exchange and optimism in which each and everyone can devote himself to personal and collective projects and aspirations in a climate of dynamism, hannony, and creativity. A world examination of the status of Knowledge Cities will reveal a tangible development in collective efforts of declaring and developing such cities around the globe. On the contrary, Arab cities are building technological isolated projects thinking that they are promoting the same concept. An examination of projects like Egypt' Smart Village and Dubai's Internet City and Knowledge Village will be helpful in evaluating the knowledge status of contemporary Arab Cities. The purpose of this paper is to explore the knowledge city concept in depth. It will discuss the principles of a knowledge city, and portrays its distinguishing characteristics and processes. I'll argue in this paper that the concept of 'Knowledge Cities' is rooted in the urban, cultural structure of traditional Arab cities. Therefore an attempt to foster this concept in today's Arab cities would not be possible by building isolated technologicalstatement scattered around the city. Alternatively, the rise of the network society, global networks, linked cities and existence of smart communities should construct the basis for shaping Arab Knowledge Cities. In addition, the paper will introduce the concept of Urban Creativity Engines , and examples of various types will be presented. I II argue that this is a more comprehensive concept for constructing and evaluating knowledge cities. Although this concept and its terminology is new, the paper will prove that there are many historical examples, regionally and internationally, of knowledge cities and Innovation/Creativity Engines. A focus on the traditional built environment of the Middle Eastern cities will be included to examine the main hypothesis of the paper.

This chapter describes a study into the expected development of the competences of the project manager in the year 2027. The study was performed amongst the members of IPMA-The Netherlands during the summer of 2007. In the study the 46 competences of the International Competence Baseline 3 (ICB 3) were tested against the expectations of the respondents for the development of project management. Based on four scenarios for the future of Europe, the members indicated which of the competences are expected to become more important, equally important or less important than today. The aim of the study was to provide insight in the expected future development of the project management competences. This goal is relevant for both practitioners and educators. The conclusions are that the study shows indications that project management is developing from an ‘occupation’ into a true ”profession”. Part of this development is a broader orientation of the project manager in which especially the competences related to the relationship of the project with its environment grow strongly in importance.

Five years after the “EU-Turkey statement” it is time for a review. This statement of 29 November 2015 has defined a comprehensive roadmap for deepening EU-Turkey relations. It is perceived to represent an institutional shift from a rules-based accession process to an interest-driven transactional character of the relationship. This paper analyses whether such a change in perspective can indeed be identified. To this end, the question is addressed as to which different goals and thus also inherent path dependencies the declaration pursues. The conceptual classification of Turkey as a candidate country, a key partner and a strategic partner is helpful in this respect. In a further step, the extent to which circumstances in these three areas have changed after the statement and how this affects the implementation of the objectives and path dependencies is discussed. The paper concludes with a critical assessment and draws lessons for the future development of EU-Turkey relations.
