The current study was conducted to determine insect fauna and population densities of some phytophagous and beneficial insect species at two different alfalfa fields in Narlıca district of Hatay province, Turkey in 2009-2010. In the first year biweekly, and in the second year weekly samplings were carried out by 25 sweep-net samplings taken by walking in diagonal directions. Aphids, thrips and gallery flies were also sampled by counting of 30 alfalfa stalks in every 8-10 steps in each of the sampling fields. As a result, 53 phytophagous species belonging to 14 families of five orders and 30 natural enemy species including 20 predators and 10 parasitoids belonging to nine families of six orders were obtained. With 19 species, Cicadellidae has been the largest number of species-containing family and Asymmetrasca descedens and Empoasca decipiens were the most intensively species in this family. In addition, Lygus rugulipennis was the most dominant species among all phytophagous species obtained. It has been found that populations of all pests species were affected by mowing the alfalfa, and show a decline. Predators were predominant among detected natural enemies, and their populations were persistent in the alfalfa fields despite approximately 7-8 mowing per year.

A small-scale study of grasshopper populations was undertaken in Harion municipality of Sarlahi district to ascertain whether grasshopper population in sugarcane growing areas is changing in consecutive years 2014 and 2015. The regular sugarcane growing areas were randomly selected and the survey was conducted to estimate the population in those consecutive years in 14 different locations where outbreak of Hieroglyphus banian (Fabricius) has occurred. The per square meter population was estimated using a ‘T’ shape which was made by tying 1m long two sticks to estimate one square meter area. The population of two consecutive years was compared to study the relationship between two years populations. The grasshopper infestation by risk category indicated that infestation warranted rating of severe in ward seven, eight and nine for 2015 from the population of 2014 AD. For 2016 AD, the risk was found low as most of the areas was categorized as moderate to light category as the population was found low in 2015 AD. Grasshopper population densities were found higher in some areas of Sarlahi district in the first year as compared to the second year. The population level in the first year was not found to induce population in next year as the population decreased in the second year. The trend of grasshopper population was not so threatening as the population was not found increasing in these years so was risk for next year. This might be due to the management of grasshoppers in nymphal stage in previous year, weather parameters, location, inter-cultural operations, decreasing of the rationing crops or presence of natural enemies. These findings provide guidance for the farmers in relation to grasshopper management and for future survey programs in relation to targeting regions of the district at risk from grasshoppers.

AbstractSorghum panicles offer a very rich microenvironment for many insect pest species and their natural enemies. Thirty arthropod species belonging to 28 families, pertaining to 9 orders were obtained from sorghum panicles planted in Sohag Governorate, Egypt, during the 3 successive seasons of 2016–2018. Out of these species were 14 pests, 16 predators, and 3 parasitoids. Lepidopteran and hemipteran pests were the most dominant species-infested sorghum-panicles during the mature stages of the panicles. Three microlepidopteran pests, the noctuid, Eublemma (Autoba) gayneri (Roth.); the pyralid, Cryptoblabes gnidiella Millière, and the cosmopterigid, Pyroderces simplex Walsingham, were recorded as major pest species infesting sorghum panicles in Sohag Governorate. The dipteran parasitoid species, Nemorilla floralis (Fallen) (Tachinidae) emerged from the pupae of the E. gayneri and C. gnidiella, while the hymenopteran parasitoid, Brachymeria aegyptiaca (Chalcididae) was obtained from the pupae of all the studied microlepidopteran pests. Spiders, coccinellids, and Orius spp. were the dominant predators collected form panicles. Post-harvest, larvae, and pupae of lepidopteran pests, especially P. simplex recorded (147, 96, and 79 larvae) and (47, 30, and 73 pupae)/10 panicles in 2016, 2017, and 2018 seasons, respectively.

Intercropping of aromatic plants provides an environmentally benign route to reducing pest damage in agroecosystems. However, the effect of intercropping on natural enemies, another element which may be vital to the success of an integrated pest management approach, varies in different intercropping systems. Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis L. (Lamiaceae), has been reported to be repellent to many insect species. In this study, the impact of sweet pepper/rosemary intercropping on pest population suppression was evaluated under greenhouse conditions and the effect of rosemary intercropping on natural enemy population dynamics was investigated. The results showed that intercropping rosemary with sweet pepper significantly reduced the population densities of three major pest species on sweet pepper, Frankliniella intonsa, Myzus persicae, and Bemisia tabaci, but did not affect the population densities of their natural enemies, the predatory bug, Orius sauteri, or parasitoid, Encarsia formosa. Significant pest population suppression with no adverse effect on released natural enemy populations in the sweet pepper/rosemary intercropping system suggests this could be an approach for integrated pest management of greenhouse-cultivated sweet pepper. Our results highlight the potential of the integration of alternative pest control strategies to optimize sustainable pest control.

The effects of soil type, temperature, and moisture on the survival and seasonal germination of seeds of A. fatua and A. ludoviciana, buried at five depths in the soil, were studied in a glasshouse experiment. Seeds of both species germinated only when mean weekly minimum temperatures were below 20°C and mean weekly maxima below 28°. A. fatua germinated better than A. ludoviciana in the 20–30° range and was therefore the dominant species in autumn germinations of wild oats. Both species germinated throughout winter. Only 30% of the seeds sown produced seedlings. Of these 90% emerged in the first year after seeding and the remainder in the second year. Only 2% of the seeds sown remained viable after 18 months. The depth at which the seeds were buried, seed type, soil type. and moisture regime all affected the survival of seeds and the percentage that produced seedlings. An explanation is offered for the dominance of A. ludoviciana in the northern wheat-belt of eastern Australia.

ABSTRACTRecolonization of Natural Enemies after Insecticide Application in Rice Planting AreaThe study to assess recolonization of natural enemies after insecticide application in rice planting area was carried out in the wet season of 2013 at Karawang Regency. The application of several insecticides of rynaxypyr, fipronil, dinotefuran, pymetrozine, imidacloprid, and BPMC was conducted when brown plant hopper population was rising and yellow stem borer flight was occurring. Observation of natural enemies was carried out on 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, and 21 days after application (DAA) using sweep net for 4 swings per plot. The results showed that spiders were relatively safe to the rynaxypyr and fipronil insecticides with hampered recolonization index (HRI) of very light and light where recolonization occurred on 1 DAA. All tested insecticides highly affected Telenomus rowani with HRI of heavy to very heavy that this parasitoid recolonized at 7 DAA. On the other hand, all insecticides showed low influence on the recolonization of Tetrastichus schoenobii with HRI from unhampered to light hamper and the recolonization occurred on 1 DAA. The effect of rynaxypyr, fipronil, imidacloprid and BPMC application on Oligosita sp. and Anagus sp. recolonization was categorized to be low with HRI of light hamper that the recolonization happened at 1 DAA and 5 DAA, respectively. The insecticides of fipronil and BPMC were considered to slightly hamper the chironomid with the light value of the HRI and the chironomid recolonized at 1 DAA on fipronil and 3 DAA on BPMC.Keywords: Effect of insecticides, Recolonization of natural enemy, RiceABSTRAKPenelitian rekolonisasi musuh alami setelah aplikasi insektisida di pertanaman padi dilakukan pada musim hujan 2013 di Kabupaten Karawang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa laba-laba relatif aman terhadap insektisida rinaksipir dan fipronil dengan nilai indeks hambatan rekolonisasi (IHR) kedua insektisida tersebut sangat ringan dan ringan dengan kecepatan rekolonisasi laba-laba pada 1 HSA. Semua insektisida menekan sangat tinggi terhadap Telenomus rowani dengan IHR berat sampai sangat berat dan rekolonisasi parasitoid tersebut dinilai lambat yaitu 7 HSA. Insektisida menekan sangat rendah terhadap Tetrastichus schoenobii dengan IHR dari tidak ada hambatan sampai hambatan ringan dan kecepatan rekolonisasinya terjadi pada 1 HSA. Tekanan insektisida rinaksipir, fipronil, imidakloprid, dan BPMC terhadap Oligosita sp. dan Anagus sp. agak rendah dengan IHR ringan dan kecepatan rekolonisasi Oligosita sp. pada 1 HSA dan Anagrus sp. pada 5 HSA. A field trial was performed in a hop yard throughout 2002, 2003 and 2004 in order to determine the within-field distribution of Phorodon humuli (Schrank) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and its natural enemies. The distribution of P. humuli was directly affected by the position of the hop plants in the garden, with significantly higher concentrations of aphids (p=0.0122 in 2002 and p=0.0006 in 2003) observed along the edge. However, in 2004 the plants located on the marginal plots had similar populations to those on the more inner plots. This can be explained by a higher wind speed which made it more difficult to land on edge plants first. The hop aphid’s main natural enemy was Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), whose population was greatest where the aphids were most abundant with a significantly greater number of eggs (p=0.0230) and adults (p=0.0245) in 2003. Lacewing eggs were also frequently observed, with a significantly higher population (p=0.0221 in 2003 and p=0.0046 in 2004) where the aphid numbers were high. The number of winged aphids was greatest towards the margins of the garden in 2003. It is argued that the spatial distribution of the hop aphid and its natural enemies could be used to plan a sampling program and to estimate the population densities of these insects for use in integrated pest management programs.

In a seminal 1973 paper, Robert Clark described the very different “cultures” of the first and second year students in a four year clinical psychology PhD programme. The author applies Clark’s template to his own experiences as trainee or trainer in five different counsellor education programmes, one in the US and four in Australia. Each of the programmes, to varying degrees, demonstrates key features of the pattern identified by Clark, where the first year is “therapeutic” and other-oriented, the second is “professional” and self-focused. The author concludes that all the surveyed programmes exhibited some level of “second year crisis”, in which a significant number of students felt abandoned, dissatisfied, or rebellious. The author extends and refines Clark’s developmental analogy (first year = childhood; second year = adolescence) to reflect recent neurological research, in particular, the shift from a right hemisphere-dominant first year of life, prioritising affiliative needs, to a left hemisphere-dominant second year, prioritising autonomy and control. This shift is paralleled later by a more gradual move from a protective, supportive childhood to necessary, but sometimes conflictual, individuation in adolescence. The first two years of a counsellor training programme broadly echo this process, a process exacerbated by the second year internship/placement, in which students must “leave home” and adjust to unfamiliar, potentially less nurturing, authority figures. Finally, the author suggests introducing more rigorous “academic holding” into the first year, and greater attention to “therapeutic holding” of dissident students in the second, hopefully decreasing student dropout, and achieving a better balanced training experience.

The objective of this paper is to document the experience of developing and implementing a second-year course in an engineering professional spine that was developed in a first-tier research university and relies on project-based core courses. The main objective of this spine is to develop the students’ cognitive and employability skills that will allow them to stand out from the crowd of other engineering graduates.The spine was developed and delivered for the first time in the academic year 2010-2011 for first-year general engineering students. In the year 2011-2012, those students joined different programs, and accordingly the second-year course was tailored to align with the different programs’ learning outcomes. This paper discusses the development and implementation of the course in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department.

Research in cognitive development has highlighted that early numeracy skills are associated with later math achievement, suggesting that these skills should be targeted in early math education. Here we tested whether tools used by researchers to assess mathematical thinking could be useful in the classroom. This paper describes a collaborative project between cognitive scientists and school board researchers/educators implementing numeracy screeners with kindergarten students over the course of three school years. The Give-A-Number task (Wynn, 1990) was used with first-year kindergarten students and the Numeracy Screener [BLINDED] with second-year kindergarten students. Results indicated that educators (N = 59) found the tools feasible to implement and helpful for exploring their students’ thinking and targeting instruction. The Educators’ feedback also helped inform improvements to the implementation of the tools and future directions for both the schools and the researchers. This work emphasizes the importance of transdisciplinary collaboration to address the research-practice gap.

Influence of abiotic factors and hosts on population dynamics of green lacewing, Chrysoper lacarnea (Stephens) was studied in sunflower, Helianthus annus (Linn.).The maximum number of C. carnea population was found during mid March –mid April in the first year and mid April – mid May in the second year in sunflower crop. The maximum number of host population viz. egg and larva of Helicoverpa armigera and Myzuspe rsicae population were found during mid March –mid April in both the year and correlation studies revealed the positive and significant correlation between larval population of H. armigera, M. persicae and predator C. carnea. While there was no significant relationship found between eggs of H. armigera and C. carnea. The C. carnea population on H. annus during both the year was positively correlated with maximum temperature and found significant,while negatively correlated with relative humidity.However, no significant correlation of C. carnea was found with minimum temperature in both the year.
