Students’ Speaking Skill in English Immersion School

This research aims to describe: (1) students' English speaking skill in English immersion school; (2) students’ strengths and weaknesses in speaking skill in English immersion school; (3) factors affecting students' speaking skill in English immersion school. The research was designed as a case study, conducted at a school applying English immersion in Bondowoso, East Java, Indonesia in Academic Year 2017-2018. The research used purposive sampling. Data were collecated by interview, questionnairre, observation, and document analysis. The informants were grade 2 students, English teachers, and the school founder. The analysis found that: (1) on the scale of 1-5 (1=very bad, 2=bad, 3=fair, 4=good, 5=very good), students’ English speaking skills were at levels of very good (2.22%), good (6.67%), fair (37.78%), bad (44.44%), and very bad (8.89%); (2) students’ strengths in English speaking skills were related to vocabulary with average score of 2.7, and the weaknesses dealt with fluency with average score of 2.25; (3) factors that were assumed to affect students’ English speaking skills were environment, local accent, vocabulary mastery, English use, preference, and habits. It is recommended that all parties involved in the English immersion program evaluate the running of the program and the content of the program to provide learning outputs through English immersion. Commitment to using English should be strengthened, especially in English Week program. Improvement on English teachers’ is needed by involving them in trainings. Finally, similar research at non-English immersion school is necessary to ensure the comparative results gained from both types of school.

The purpose of this research was to develope and validate the suplementary speaking material in digital media for accounting students of SMK Negeri 1 Lubuklinggau. This research used Research and Development Method by applying Borg and Gall Model. There were ten steps, they are (1) research and information collecting (2) planning (3) developing preliminary form of product (4) preliminary field testing (5) main product revision (6) field testing (7) operational product revision (8) operational field testing (9) final product (10) dissemination and implementation.. The subjects were the Accounting students of eleventh grade in academic year 2020/2021. While, for step 6, 8 and 10 were applied by using Google Classroom application in English group of XI Accounting Program. The data showed that there were some problem faced by the students aespecially in finding a speaking book which concerning to accounting program. The teacher also need a book that can help English speaking skill not only for general English. After following the ten steps in R&D method, started from analyzing, evaluating, revising and trying out, it was concluded that the suplementary speaking material in digital media for accounting students can help them in learning English based on their need. The research aims at knowing and finding whether or not the application of four corner debate is effective to improve students speaking skill at the eighth grade students of SMP Jamaluddin ArRumi Jatisari Jenggawah Jember in academic year 2016/2017. The population of the study was 78 students with the number of sample 31 students in class VIII B. The research was a preexperimental research in which only one class which was treated using the technique. The data collection was administered through conducting speaking test and scored students performance. Afterwards the scores were converted to the school passing grade and then calculated in paired ttest. The result showed some data including students average score in pretest and posttest. The average score in pretest was 67.59 and 76.15 in posttest. It indicated an improvement for 8.65 points. The result of paired ttest calculation was 8.61 and the ttable score was 1.697with 0.05 significance level of score and DF 31 (32 to 1). The score analysis indicated that the ttest score was higher than the t-table score. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was approved which means the application of four corner debate in the classroom is effective to teach English speaking to the eighth grade students of SMP Jamaluddin ArRumi Jatisari Jenggawah Jember in academic year 2016/2017. English speaking skill is one of the most challenging skills that has to be taught by teachers, and there are many factors affecting students' low speaking proficiency. Hence, charades are implemented in this study. The purpose of this research is to study the improvement of English-speaking skills among college students through implementing Charades in the classroom. This study consists of two objectives. The first objective is to determine the effectiveness of charades in improving learners’ speaking skills, and the second objective is to investigate learners’ perception of charades. This study involves 18 students from Chenderoh Community College. Charades were implemented in their speaking lessons. This is single-group quasi-experimental research. Data was collected through pre and post-test and questionnaire. Speaking scores were analyzed through paired T-test. After the data analysis, there is a significant difference between pre and post-test. Students showed a positive perception of charades.

This research aims at finding out students’ personal initiative towards their achievement in speaking English. This research was conducted in an English department at a university in North Sulawesi Indonesia. The data were obtained from the sixth semester students in English Language and Literature study program of academic year 2015/2016 consisting of 21 students. In obtaining the data about students’ personal initiative, a questionnaire was distributed, and for the speaking performance, the data were obtained from students’ scores in Public Speaking subject. To find out the relation between these two variables, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient formula was used. The result of this research shows that there is a correlation between students’ personal initiative towards their speaking performance with the value of  = (0.52) categorized as a moderate correlation. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that personal initiative of students was important to be considered as one of several determination factors for students’ achievement in English speaking skill. It is suggested that students encourage themselves for taking initiative to speak, and for the teacher to give the students correction and suggestion to help them develop themselves.

The aim of this study to analyze students' English speaking skills in conducting taking orders procedure in restaurants.  This study is conducted in order to overcome the problems encountered by the students in speaking activities in taking orders. To measure the ability of students in speaking English in taking orders, the researchers observed the procedures that the students did not perform and measure the students’ competence of English language. Samples of this study are the fourth semester students in Hospitality courses Diploma Degree of Mataram Tourism Institute in Academic Year 2018/2019. The results of this study indicated that the level of completeness of the procedure in taking student orders in STP Mataram is in average. More than 50% students have conducted the appropriate procedure when taking orders in using English. From the result of data analysis in measuring the students’ competence in speaking English, the mean score is 78.90 with standard deviation is 12.14. From the result, it is converted and get score 3.1. The score showed that the ability of English students from 40 students in STP Mataram classified as Good Criteria.

The purposes of the research were to find out whether the communicative competence in English speaking skills had a significant relationship with students' cognitive abilities was English speaking skill the most important achievement. How cognitive abilities and communicative competencies in English speaking skills were managed for the primary purposes of the English debating team. This research combined both qualitative and quantitative research. It used a descriptive method by distributing questionnaire, doing a survey, using observation, and doing an in-depth interview as the methods to collect data. The informants were twelve students who participated in the national teams of English Debating Championship of Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta from 2013-2017. The results of this research reveal that there is a significant connection between communicative competence and cognitive ability in which cognitive ability has an important impact on thinking, critical analysis, and creativity. Furthermore, cognitive ability gives a direct influence on communicative competence in speaking English. This communicative competence is reflected in the ability to produce critical-intellectual andcommunicative-factual sentences in doing the analysis and giving the argumentation.

The aimed of this research is to test the effectiveness of using Pecha Kucha Technique in students’ speaking performance at fourth semester of English Department in Muhammadiyah University of Metro. Pecha Kucha is a presentation form of 20 pictures for 20 seconds and it is also called 20x20 presentations.The entire presentation always lasts for exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds. The research method used in this research is an experimental research. The subjects of this research are the students at fourth semester of English Department in Muhammadiyah University of Metro academic year 2020. There are 21 students of control group and 21 students of experimental group. The research instrument used to collect the data in this research is an oral test. From the two classes, the experimental and control group, the measurement shows that increasing line of the speaking ability of the experimental group is higher than the control group. The result of pre-test score shows that the average score of the experimental group and the control group are 52.38 and 56.19. From the score of both groups, the result shows that the control group is better than experimental group. Then, the result of the post test of the experimental group is higher than control group; the average scores are 70,71 for experimental group and 62.38 for control group. It can be concluded that there is significant influence of using Pecha Kucha Technique in students’ speaking skill.

This study aims to recognize the problems that students of English department face when they speak English. To achieve the objective of the investigation a quantitative research was designed. A questionnaire was used as the main data collection tool. The findings of the study showed that majority of the students have a positive perception about importance and necessity of speaking skill. According to the findings most of the students do not have the opportunity of practicing English speaking out of the class. Moreover, dissimilarity in English education background of the students are another challenge which is recognized in outcome of the study. Furthermore, the findings showed that most of the students feel motivated and confident in speaking performance. Moreover, the findings also revealed that the teachers have significant role for motivating the students in speaking performance. To sum up, the result exposed that students are appreciated and praised when they perform a speaking task efficiently.

This research aims to find out the effectiveness of the application of technology-based teaching media to improve the speaking skills of the Hospitality Study Program Students of STP Mataram. In this study, several media that utilize computers and the internet will be used in learning speaking. The use of the application Rosetta Stone, Duolingo, and YouTube videos integrated with the google classroom are used as learning media for students' speaking learning of the hospitality study program students. In this study, 30 students are used as the experimental group and 30 students as a controlled group. The results of this study indicated that the value of t-test > t table (3.462> 2.676), which means that there is a significant difference in English speaking skills using technology-based learning media. In conclusion, the use of technology-based learning media is effective in enhancing students’ speaking skill.

This study aimed at investigating the effect of blended learning on the English-students’ speaking skills at SMAN 2 Patra Nusa Aceh Tamiang. Also, this study investigated students’ level differences of English-speaking skills of SMA Patra Nusa students. Twenty-five students of the eleventh-grade class were involved in this study. This study used a quasi-experimental with pre-experimental design. The instruments used in this study were observation and test (pretest and posttest). The results of data analysis showed that sig. 2-tailed = 0.000 < α (0.05), it means reject H0, accepted Ha. Finding obtained of pretest 77,04 and posttest 88,95. In conclusion, the mean pretest and posttest scores differ significantly. In other words, blended learning positively affects students speaking skills used in the media google classroom at SMA N 2 Patranusa.
