The necessity of launching new dairy products for modern diets has led to the development of a new application of cold pressed linseed oil. The Institute of Natural Fibers and Medicinal Plants in Poznań developed a linseed butter combining the health benefits of butter and cold pressed high-linolenic linseed oil. This combination enables dietary supplementation with omega-3 acids in the form of a component obtained from flax seeds. In relation to other oils available on the market, flaxseed oil is characterized by the highest content of omega-3 acids and a very high content of unsaturated acids.

Flax and hemp, two plants traditionally associated with European civilization, are a source of many extremely valuable ingredients that are simply necessary for health. Flax is one of the noblest plants. It is the richest plant source of nutrients sought for by man. Linseed is extremely rich in mucous compounds, proteins, sterols, organic acids, enzymes, mineral salts, unsaturated glycerides. The most valuable component of flax seeds is oil, the content of which can reach up to 40%. The unique linseed oil contains over 90% unsaturated fatty acids (EFA), of which more than half are omega-3 fatty acids. Hemp leaves and inflorescence contain phytocannabinoids, which are responsible for a number of biological effects, e.g. antidepressant, anti-emetic, analgesic, anti-cancer, anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory and antiatherosclerotic activity. In recent years, the topic of endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome often appears in the professional press, which is explained by the fact that biological evolution cannot keep up with rapid lifestyle changes.

In Russia, flax has been cultivated since ancient times; fiber linen fabrics and other products were produce to meet needs of the population and for exchange. Oil flax was a less common crop, but its cultivation is of great interest.In recent years, worldwide interest in the use of flaxseed oil has increased due to its healing properties and high content of linolenic acid. Flaxseed oil removes cholesterol, improves the metabolism of proteins and fats, normalizes blood pressure, and reduces the likelihood of blood clots and tumors. Flaxseed oil reduces the risk of cardiovascular and oncological diseases and allergies. Whole flaxseed is used in various countries as an additive to bread and cereal mixtures. Proteins extracted from flaxseed have a gelatinizing effect and can be used in cooking.Oil flax is a valuable food and industrial crop (seeds, oil, short-fiber, cake and meal). Its seeds contain up to 50% of the most valuable vegetable oil which is the richest source of omega-3 and omega-6. Linseed oil ranks first among industrial oils by the volume of production. It is used in the manufacture of environmentally friendly varnishes, paints, drying oils, which serve as a standard for reliability and durability. Linseed oil is widely used in printing, rubber, electrical and many other industries.

Linseed, commonly known as flaxseed, is a fibre-rich food product. According to the recent study prepared by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), an adequate intake of dietary fiber contributes to reducing the risk of colorectal cancer. In addition, the flaxseed and the oil extracted from it are considered to be food products with a high content of anti-inflammatory, unsaturated α-linolenic acid (ALA). However, the authors of the most recent scientific research have assigned the anticancer significance of flax seeds to plant lignan - secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG), of which flaxseed is the main food source. This article provides a review of the world scientific literature together with an assessment of the validity of dietary supplementation with SDG from flaxseeds in cancer and during chemotherapeutic treatment. The paper also presents the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) view on dietary supplementation with flax seeds and its lignans. Additionally, selected dietary supplements available on the Polish market containing SDGs, linseed oil or linseed were analysed, together with a description of their intended use suggested by the manufacturers.

For millennia, humans have used hundreds of medicinal plants to treat diseases. Currently, many species with important characteristics are known to alleviate a wide range of health problems, mainly in rural areas, where the use of these resources is very high, even replacing scientific medicine almost completely. This paper presents the dehydration of medicinal plants that are grown in the State of Campeche through direct and indirect solar technologies in order to evaluate the influence of air flow and temperature on the color of the final product through the L* a* scale. b*, analyzing the activity of water and humidity during the drying process. The experimental results showed that the direct solar dryer with forced convection presents a little significant color change in a drying time of 400 min on average, guaranteeing the null bacterial proliferation and reaching a final humidity between 9 % and 11 %.

Flavonoids are naturally occurring plant polyphenols found universally in all fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants. They have emerged as a promising candidate in the formulation of treatment strategies for various neurodegenerative disorders. The use of flavonoid rich plant extracts and food in dietary supplementation have shown favourable outcomes. The present review describes the types, properties and metabolism of flavonoids. Neuroprotective role of various flavonoids and the possible mechanism of action in the brain against the neurodegeneration have been described in detail with special emphasis on the tangeritin.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of coated omega-3 fatty acid (n-3 CFA) by corn cob power silica on performance of weaning pigs. A total of 200 weaned pigs [(Landrace x Yorkshire) x Duroc, average initial body weight at 6.97 ± 1.22 kg] were randomly assigned to four experimental treatments in a 6-week experiment in 3 phases as follows: CON, basal diet; 2) 0.3CFA, CON + phase 1(0.3% n-3CFA), phase 2(0.2% n-3CFA), phase 3(0.1% n-3CFA); 3) 0.6CFA, CON + phase 1(0.6% n-3CFA), phase 2(0.4% n-3CFA), phase 3(0.2% n-3CFA); 4) 0.9CFA, CON + phase 1(0.9% n-3CFA), phase 2(0.6% n-3CFA), phase 3 (0.3% n-3CFA). Each treatment had 10 replicates with 5 pigs (three gilts and two barrows) per replicate. The data were analyzed using the GLM procedure of SAS as a randomized complete block design. Pen served as the experimental unit. Linear, quadratic and cubic polynomial contrasts were used to examine effect of dietary treatment with coated n-3FA in the basal diet. Variability in the data was expressed as the standard error of means and P< 0.05 was considered to statistically significant. Increasing the level of n-3CFA in the diet linearly increased ADG and G/F of pigs (Table 1). Increasing the level of n-3CFA showed a linear increment in the digestibility of DM (83.59, 84.38, 85.13, 85.89 %) whereas nitrogen digestibility (81.79, 82.38, 82.96, 83.64 %) showed a trend (linear effect, p=0.0594) at the end of experiment. The fecal lactobacillus count was increased (7.22, 7.27, 7.33, 7.35 log10cfu/g) with the increase in the supplemental level of n-3CFA (linear effect; p< 0.05). However, there were no differences in the concentration of serum haptoglobin, or fecal E. coli, Clostridium and Salmonella counts despite the increase in n-3CFA levels in the diet. Supplementation of the diet with coated n-3 fatty acids positively affected growth performance and digestibility of dry matter and nitrogen, and enhanced the count of lactobacillus in weaning pigs.

Self-regulation, the regulation of behaviour in early childhood, impacts children’s success at school and is a predictor of health, wealth, and criminal outcomes in adulthood. Self-regulation may be optimised by dietary supplementation of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFAs). The aim of the “Omega Kid” study is to investigate the feasibility of a protocol to investigate whether n-3 LCPUFA supplementation enhances self-regulation in preschool-aged children. The protocol assessed involved a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of 12 weeks duration, with an intervention of 1.6 g of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) per day (0.3 g EPA and 1.3 g DHA) in a microencapsulated powder compared to placebo. Children (n = 78; 40 boys and 38 girls) aged 3–5 years old were recruited and randomly allocated to the treatment (n = 39) or placebo group (n = 39). The HS–Omega-3 Index® served as a manipulation check on the delivery of either active (n-3 LCPUFAs) or placebo powders. Fifty-eight children (76%) completed the intervention (28–30 per group). Compliance to the study protocol was high, with 92% of children providing a finger-prick blood sample at baseline and high reported-adherence to the study intervention (88%). Results indicate that the protocol is feasible and may be employed in an adequately powered clinical trial to test the hypothesis that n-3 LCPUFA supplementation will improve the self-regulation of preschool-aged children.
