The subject of this research is the lexical means of creation of the linguocultural image of Persia in the novel “The Death of Vazir-Mukhtar” by Yury Tynyanov in comparison with “The Travel Notes” by A. S. Griboyedov The goal is to reveal the patterns of creation of linguoculturological image of Persia. For achieving the set goal, the lexical means are classified into lexical-semantic groups and subjected to semantic analysis. The article explores the lexical-semantic groups: nonequivalent lexicon (realias); proper names, including toponyms and anthroponyms; and common nouns that denote cultural realities, particularly denominations of people, place, holidays and calendar events, and artifacts. The scientific novelty consists in diachronic research of the process of formation of the image of Persia. The main results lies in the proof that the linguoculturological image is formed on the basis of certain lexical-semantic constants. The analysis of lexical units indicated that the semantic groups of words with linguoculturological component in these two works coincide, but the linguocultural image of Iran created by Y. Tynyanov in the novel “The Death of Vazir-Mukhtar” 100 years after “The Travel Notes” by A. S. Griboyedov is expressed by a wide range and variety of thematic lexical groups. This fact is explained not only by the genre differences of the texts, but also by the fact that with the course of time, the linguoculturological image of the country changes; it develops around certain constants, the semantic core.

The subject of this article is a semantic analysis of the names of food establishments in Białystok. What was found was that discussed urbo-chrematonims oscillate between an informative function and the need to express originality, uniqueness. They constitute important places on the onymic map of the city. As any advertisement, they rely on the persuasiveness expressed by positive connotations and semantic justification. Numerous names of food establishments appear and disappear on the urban landscape of proper names, thus it seems necessary to record the abundance of their meanings on an ongoing basis.

This article is dedicated to the problem of the choice of name for a text semantic field formed within a literary text. The goal consists in determination of factors that hinder or preclude the naming of a text field. The subject of this research is the text semantic field observed particularly in the novels of F. M. Dostoevsky “The Idiot” and I. S. Turgenev “Home of the Gentry”. The author establishes that the text semantic field is closely connected to the contexts where elements of the field can be equitable, which complicates determination of the core and periphery of a text field, namely its name. In the course of research, the author applied the methods of analysis of scientific literature, interpretation of literary text as an aesthetic system, and method of semantic analysis. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the author is first to discuss the question of difficulties of naming a text field using the materials of the novels “The Idiot”  by F. M. Dostoevsky and “Home of the Gentry” by I. S. Turgenev. The conclusion is made that in majority of cases a text field can be named by the most frequent element therein. At the same time, the name “Idiot” in F. M. Dostoevsky’s novel does not fully reveal the content of a text field. In some instances it is impossible to name a text field (as in the novel “Home of the Gentry” by I. S. Turgenev), since elements of the field deal with the equitable mutual implication.

were very exciting but speculative, being technologically feasible only if new classes of materials could be developed The subject of materials in nonlinear optics (NLO) encompasses a wide range of important topics. Today the line between materials and NLO processes has become fuzzy, particularly for newer NLO processes (e.g. photorefrac-tion, and optical bistability, logic and computing). For more established NLO processes (e.g., harmonic generation, parametric processes, linear electro-optic effect, etc.) the subjects are well studied and the importance of various materials properties on the NLO process are known, though these properties are not necessarily predictable, controllable, or optimized in current materials.A decade ago, having been introduced to NLO phenomena through postdoctoral research, I had an opportunity to define and pursue an NLO research program at Xerox's Webster Research Center. The question was posed: “Are new materials needed for NLO applications?” The answer must start with another question: “Which NLO process … with light of what wavelength, pulse duration, and power… and for what purpose?”It was clear that important limitations to many of the novel things one might do with optics were: insufficient nonlin-earity magnitude, inability to fabricate reliable device structures, occurrence of deleterious optical properties, and restrictions due to other material properties. The newer NLO phenomena. Use of older NLO processes in new technological applications seemed a more down-to-earth quest.

SummaryOne of the novel problems presented by supersonic transports is the control of the complex powerplants needed to achieve optimum efficiency over a very wide range of forward speeds. The subject is a large one and its proper understanding involves the disciplines of aerodynamics, thermodynamics, servo-theory and finally human engineering, because its end product is a set of knobs, levers, lights and dials which must be usable by the flight crew. This paper is intended as an elementary introduction, using the special case of the Concorde as a basis. First, an attempt is made to give the aerodynamic and thermodynamic reasons for the large number of powerplant variables which the control systems must manipulate. On this basis, a functional specification of the control systems is established and, finally, the crew's job of propulsion management is described step-by-step in the course of a typical mission.

The article considers verbalization of the DOUBT concept by means of epistemic modality, namely epistemically marked words and phrases. The relevance of the study is due to the tendency to study epistemic modality (Palmer F., Halliday M.), epistemic words (Biber D., Wierzbicka A.), phrases of harmonious / disharmonious type (Aijmer K., Hoye L.) and intensifier words (Quirk R.). However, the verbalization of the DOUBT concept by these units has not yet been studied. The object of research is the ways of verbalization of the DOUBT concept by means of epistemic modality, and the subject of research is the meaning of epistemic words and phrases Adv + V / V + Adv, Modal V + Adv, Adv + Adj, Adj + N, where the main words are epistemically marked words, and adverbs and adjectives act as modifiers and intensifiers of meaning. Material of the research ‒ dictionary definitions of epistemic words, word combinations of epistemic words with adverbs-intensifiers in the Oxford Collocations Dictionary, modern English fiction from the 90s of the XX century until now. The research methodology consists in using component analysis of epistemic words to determine words with the “uncertain” seme, lexical-semantic analysis to distinguish verbalizing words of the DOUBT concept, in analyzing the compatibility of epistemic words with intensifier words and pragmatic analysis of epistemic words and phrases. The results of the study are the identification of the semantic features that are inherent in the words verbalizing the concept DOUBT and their grouping by semantic features. Studies of harmonic / disharmonious type phrases allow to refer to the phrases-verbalizers of the DOUBT concept those that contain units that express a weak force of modality (e.g. could possibly), and those whose meaning is modified by intensifier words in the direction of intensification of uncertainty (e.g. will possibly). In the phrases Adv + V / V + Adv, Adv + Adj, Adj + N the influence of the adverb of degree on the meaning of the phrase was traced. The compatibility of epistemic words to denote the DOUBT concept and epistemic words of confidence and probability with amplifiers, emphasizers and downtoners (Quirk R. terms) has been studied. It has been found that the use of epistemic words of confidence and probability with downtoners mitigates the confidence of such a phrase and contributes to its attribution (e.g. hardly believe) to the traditional verbalizers of the DOUBT concept.

The relevance of our study is due to the fact that in modern linguistics is still insufficiently studied the potential of the proper names of the literary heroes in the prose texts of famous authors. Therefore, in our opinion, the study of the hero's own name needs special attention, and a thorough analysis of the proper names of the literary heroes in M. Dochynets' novel "Children of the Fern" opens opportunities for further generalizations in the field of relevant linguistic and stylistic issues. The purpose of our article is to study the role of the proper names of the literary heroes in the novel "Children of the Fern" written by the Transcarpathian writer, winner of the Shevchenko Prize Myroslav Dochynets; our task is to describe the proper names of the literary heroes, to reveal their information loading, the role in the development of the plot. The object of the research is the novel "Children of the Fern" by M. Dochynets. The subject of the research is the proper names of the literary heroes and their functional content. Methods and techniques. Research methods are determined by the specifics of onymic material, which requires a systematic approach and the use of traditional descriptive method and its basic techniques: observation, interpretation and generalization. The functional load of the proper names of the literary heroes is determined by the method of contextual analysis. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time the role of the proper names of the literary heroes functioning in the novel "Children of the Fern" by M. Dochynets is studied. Attention is paid to the role of the proper names of the literary heroes (including pseudonyms) and the conditions of their origin; the etymological meaning (internal form) of the proper names of the literary heroes is revealed. It is proved that proper names of the literary heroes in the novel are the most important lexical elements that have a variety of semantic and emotional content, they are accompanied by connotations and various associations, and they characterize the character by national, social origin, and create a certain emotional tone, reflect the author's attitude to the named character. Conclusions. Proper names of the literary heroes in the novel "Children of the Fern" are a powerful layer of vocabulary. Their role in the text is difficult to evaluate: they are indicators of time, nationally significant, informational and evaluative – they perform different functions.

Abstract: Novel is one of the mediums of non-verbal communication that the author wishes to convey to the reader. Through the reading of this novel, the reader can experience a wide range of emotions. Whether it's sad, happy, excited and so on. Therefore, this study will explore the meaning behind the novel entitled "Sangkar" by Samsiah Mohd. Nor. The novel was published in 2010 through the publication of Alaf 21 Sdn. Bhd. There are 248 pages and 26 chapters for this novel. This study is a qualitative study consisting of annotated text analysis as well as a simple quantitative approach to finding lexical frequency and complexity in this Sangkar novel. To analyze this novel the researcher will apply a lexical semantic approach. Through this lexical semantic approach it is possible to classify lexical types into synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, polysemic, homonyms, homophones, homographs, metonyms and meronyms. Based on the findings of this study, the frequency and percentage of total lexical semantics recorded a frequency value of 1019 (100%) lexical only. However, through the novel there was only partial lexical semantics comprising;  antonyms–442 (43.37%), synonyms–218 (21.39%), meronyms–185 (18.15%) and hyponyms–174 (17.07%). It can be concluded that through this lexical semantic approach it is possible to classify different lexical groups into the same group of meanings.

Abstract The study, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vincent Blanár, offers a comparative Czech-Slovak view of the lexeme brother (Czech bratr – Slovak brat) in its paradigmatic relations. The analysis is based on a specific textual basis, the novel Bratrstvo (Brotherhood) by the Czech writer Alois Jirásek. The starting point of the comparison is the Czech original and two Slovak translations of this literary text, which shows a remarkably wide range of semantic concretizations of the polysemic word brother. In the Czech-Slovak comparison, various morphosyntactic, lexical-semantic, derivational and collocational differences appear. In a comparative view, the sphere of addressing is particularly interesting.

The article considers the translation of German anthroponyms in a literary text, taking into account the achievements of modern linguistic and cultural studies. The research is based on the theory of precedent and the following research methods: etymological, word-formation analysis, lexical-semantic analysis, analysis of dictionary definitions, linguistic and stylistic analyses etc. To achieve the purpose of scientific research, such an algorithm of actions is applied: 1) establishment of precedent phenomena and surnames, determination of the association to which they appeal; 2) analysis of the method of transferring German surnames in the Ukrainian translation; 3) identification of translation decisions. The study was based on 190 surnames of characters from Dieter Noll’s novel “Die Abenteuer des Werner Holt” (Book 1). The system of surnames of the novel is divided into two groups: precedent and fictional. Precedent onyms denote famous writers, philosophers, generals and others. Fictitious onyms are divided into German surnames, foreign surnames and author’s surnames. German surnames are of German origin. The second group singles out surnames of Slavic origin. Author’s surnames are characterized by a certain connotation and influence on the reader. The reproduction of German surnames in the Ukrainian translation takes place by means of transcription and transliteration.
