The influence of the diet on larval growth of the scallops Argopecten nucleus was studied, testing six microalgae diets composed by single-algae and mixed diets of the species Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros calcitrans y Tetraselmis suecica, handling a concentration per mL equivalent to 40000 cells of I. galbana and the response through the variables surviving, growth, appearance of the eye spot and state of condition (full, half-full and empty larvae) was measured. The diets containing I. galbana showed greater results over all the measured variables, with regard to those where it was not present. In particular, the mixed diet I. galbana + C. calcitrans presented superiority over all variables, although in the most cases was statistically similar to I. galbana + C. calcitrans + T. suecica, I. galbana + T. suecica and I. galbana alone. For the opposite, the diets with the lowest results were C. calcitrans and C. calcitrans + T. suecica. The results obtained are principally attributed to the nutritional composition mainly of high unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) of each microalgae and each mixture supply, which is discussed in detail.

Cricket powder (CP) contains significant amounts of protein, fat (including unsaturated fatty acids), and fiber, as well as vitamins and minerals. The high nutritional value and low price make it an interesting addition to food production. This paper is a report on the results of the addition of cricket powder to pasta. Three levels of durum semolina replacement were chosen: 5%, 10%, and 15%. The obtained products were analyzed for their nutritional composition, cooking and textural properties, and color, as well as consumer acceptance. The results indicate that the addition of CP influenced the cooking weight and cooking loss (reducing losses and water absorption), as well as the color of the pasta, reducing its lightness and shifting color balances to blue and red. The firmness of pasta was also influenced. The firmness was strengthened by addition of CP. Principal components analysis indicated that the flavor change had the most pronounced effect on consumer acceptance. Nevertheless, sensory evaluation proved that protein-enriched pasta produced with CP has consumer acceptance comparable with that of conventional products.

Sunflower is a pollinator-dependent crop and one of the most cultivated oilseeds in the world, supporting important sectors of the agricultural industry, such as the food supply, because it is an important source of vitamin E and unsaturated fatty acids for human health. Although it is well stablished that bee pollination improves sunflower seed set, it is still unknown if pollinators influence the nutritional composition. Considering the economic importance of sunflowers for several Brazilian agricultural sectors, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the bee community for (1) achene quality (weight and nutritional composition) and (2) market value. Exclusion experiments were performed with hybrid sunflowers and showed that bee pollination enhanced the achene weight by 91 %, the levels of vitamin E by 45 % and unsaturated fatty acids by 0.3 %. Also, it was estimated that due to the pollination services provided by bees, the grower of the sunflower cultivar used in this study nearly duplicates the sale value of the achenes per hectare of cultivated area. Thus, the current study highlights the importance of bees as providers of cross- and self-pollination to nutritional quality of sunflower achenes and provides useful baseline figures to further evaluations of the effects of pollinators on human diets and health.

Several species of the planktonic free-living genus Oithona have been successfully used in the larviculture of marine fish and shrimp. However, few studies have been published that allow us to estimate the potential of Oithona nana culture under controlled conditions. This work evaluated the effect of the microalgae Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans as single (200,000 cells/mL) and mixed diets (100,000 + 100,000 cells/mL) on population and individual growth, ingestion rate, number of spawnings, fertility, development time by stage, and sex ratio of O. nana. We cultured this copepod at 28 ± 0.5 °C, 35 PSU salinity, 125 lux, and 12:12 photoperiod. Results showed that diet had no effect on the final population level (6273–7966 ind/L) or on individual growth, nor on sex ratio, with less males than females. With C. calcitrans, O. nana had a higher filtration rate (57 ng C/ind/day). On the other hand, a mixed diet induced a higher number of spawns (0.4 events/day) and nauplii per spawn (23 ind). Similarly, a single or mixed diet, containing I. galbana, accelerated the development rate by 6.33–7.00 days. We concluded that O. nana can be cultured with both microalgae, indicating its potential use in an intensive system for production. However, more research is required to improve the productivity of O. nana rearing.

The objective of this study was to evaluate influence of age on the meat quality attributes and nutritional composition of three way synthetic pig (25% Large White Yorkshire x 25% Landrace x 50% Duroc). The meat quality attributes and nutritional composition of two different age groups (six months and one year) were studied. The results obtained in this study indicated that the meat of young pigs had higher water holding capacity, Lightness (L*), moisture, essential amino acids, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, ecosapentaenoic acid, docosohexanoic acid, total poly unsaturated fatty acids (P less than 0.01), total unsaturated fatty acids, poly unsaturated/ saturated fatty acids P/S ratio (P less than 0.01) and lesser fibre diameter (P less than 0.01), myofibrillar fragmentation index (P less tha 0.01), fat (P less than 0.01), total saturated fatty acids and cholesterol content (P less than 0.01) than adult. Based on the results it was concluded that meat of young animals (six months) had superior meat quality than the meat of adult animals (one year).

The proximate nutritional compositions of Swietenia mahagoni Jacq seed cake and the fatty acids present in the oil were investigated. The proximate nutritional composition of the seed cake were analyzed by the standard methods and it was found to contain moisture (14.37%), minerals (16.36%), fats (19.42%), crude fiber (19.60%), protein (8.76%) and carbohydrate (21.49%). The fatty acid composition of the oil was analyzed by GC-MS and a total of 48 compounds have been identified. The major constituents of the methylated fatty esters were linoleic acid (26.00%), elaidic acid (24.39%), stearic acid (14.32%), palmitic acid (12.97%), 10-methyl-10-nonadecanol (5.24%), ecosanoic acid (2.48%), 3-heptyne-2,5-diol, 6-methyl-5-(1-methylethyl) (2.03%), octadecanoic acid 9,10,12-trimethoxy (1.90%); 1,3-dioxalane, 4 ethyl-4-methyl-2-pentadecyl (1.89%) and 2-furapentanoic acid (1.03%). Several authors have shown that by feeding bivalve larvae on a mixed algal diet growth is often better than when each of the constituent species of the diet was fed individually (Davis & Guillard, 1958; Walne & Spencer, 1968; Calabrese & Davis, 1970). The criterion upon which the value of the diets has been assessed has almost invariably been larval growth and rarely have the larvae been grown to metamorphosis.This paper reports the results of a series of trials with Ostrea edulis L. larvae which were fed with three diets. Two were single species diets of Isochrysis galbana Parke and Tetraselmis suecica (Kylin) Butch, while the third was a combination of these two species. Larvae were grown to metamorphosis on each of the diets and then for a further period with a common food to assess the value of the larval diet on the subsequent performance of the spat.

Cobia, Rachycentron canadum, is an important recreational marine fish of growing popularity in the aquaculture industry. Knowledge of the impact of environment on their fatty acids (FAs) utilization may contribute to the understanding their feeding in culture condition especially as cobia is been considered for low salinity culture. This study investigates the variations in the fatty acid contents of cobia from Dungun coast, Malaysia with respect to the changes in seasons and feeding intensity. Saturated fatty acids (FAs) comprised the majority of FAs in muscle, followed by monoenes, total poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (n-3) and then total PUFAs (n-6) with no seasonal variation in the quantity. A similar trend was observed in liver but total saturated FAs was significantly higher during the inter-monsoon while total monoenes significantly accumulate during monsoon. During low feeding intensity, there was a significant accumulation of PUFAs (n-6) in the muscle tissue (P < 0.05). Gut content analyses showed that cobia significantly increased the consumption of mollusks during the inter-monsoon (P < 0.05), although bony fishes dominated their diet throughout the year with no significant seasonal differences (P > 0.05). Our results suggest that cobia lipids are composed of a significant quantity of omega-3 and omega-6 FAs, which are considered to have important health benefits. While the environmental variability especially salinity fluctuations and prey abundance that accompany seasonal changes have a significant impact on the nutritional composition of cobia in Malaysian waters, their nutritional quality is maintained.

Purpose The Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest eating patterns and relies much on the regular consumption of fish, which is a source of unsaturated fatty acids, protein, vitamins and minerals. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the macronutrients and micronutrients profile of 24 commercial fish species available in the Portuguese market. Design/methodology/approach A comparative study was undertaken based on nutritional datasheets provided by laboratories and based on the database of the Portuguese National Health Institute Doutor Ricardo Jorge. Findings The results obtained showed that while most of the fish species are low-fat, gilthead and salmon are considered high in fat, with salmon presenting significant amounts of unsaturated fatty acids. The blue shark shows the highest amounts of protein, whereas codfish shows significantly high levels of salt content. Sardine is much richer in terms of vitamins than the other species. With respect to minerals, there is a lot of variation among species. It is worth noticing the skate, with high amounts of sodium, calcium and phosphorous. Statistical analysis evidenced some relations between the properties evaluated, and it was possible to establish two distinct groups of fish through cluster analysis. Practical implications The species evaluated revealed a highly important nutritional value that should be an incentive to their regular consumption. Moreover, a lack of nutritional information about some micronutrients was found in several fish species, which should be studied in future studies. Originality/value This paper fulfils an identified need to compare nutritional composition of fish available in Portugal.

Five microalgae strains, namely Isochrysis galbana, Microchloropsis gaditana, Scenedesmus obliquus, Nannochloropsis oculata and Tetraselmis suecica, were selected as potential candidates for polyunsaturated fatty acids’ production, evaluating biomass productivity and their capacity to accumulate high lipid contents under different trophic modes. Microalgae strains were cultivated in the presence of 1% glucose using mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions, while autotrophic cultures served as control experiments. The results demonstrate that S. obliquus performed the highest biomass productivity that reached 0.13 and 0.14 g L−1 d−1 under mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions, respectively. I. galbana and S. obliquus utilized elevated contents of glucose in mixotrophy, removing 55.9% and 95.6% of the initial concentration of the carbohydrate, respectively, while glucose consumption by the aforementioned strains also remained high under heterotrophic cultivation. The production of lipids was maximal for I. galbana in mixotrophy and S. obliquus in heterotrophy, performing lipid productivities of 24.85 and 22.77 mg L−1 d−1, respectively. The most abundant saturated acid detected for all microalgae strains evaluated was palmitic acid (C16:0), while oleic and linolenic acids (C18:1n9c/C18:3n3) comprised the most abundant unsaturated fatty acids. I. galbana performed the highest linoleic acid (C18:2n6c) content under heterotrophic nutrition, which reached 87.9 mg g−1 of ash-free dry weight. Among the microalgae strains compared, the biomass and lipid production monitored for I. galbana and S. obliquus confirm that both strains could serve as efficient bioproducers for application in algal biorefineries.
